Local governing bodies include, but are not limited to City Coun- cils, County Supervisors and School Boards. Voting in favor were Coun- cilmembers Jim Edwards, Laura Lee and Mayor Joseph Cho. Assistant City Manager Kathleen Jung Matsumoto said the bill is to en- sure that any member of a governing body who was not re-elected does not enter into any long-term contracts or make long-term appointments that would prevent the incoming legisla- tive body from making decisions that best benefit their communities. Councilman Bruce Barrows asked if there was any opposition to the bill. Matsumoto said the California State Association of Counties, the Ur- ban Counties Caucus, and Regional Council of Rural Counties. Local clubwomen attend annual 54th LCD ConventionBy Helen M. Brown

One hundred clubwomen attended the Los Cerritos District (LCD) from thirteen (13) cities comprising the district. The convention was held at the Holiday Inn in Buena Park Sunday, April 4th thru Tues-day, the 6th. This was the 7th year the convention was held at this site.

There was a reception for the District President Winnie Baker Sun-day evening with the theme “A Small World.” The ladies were encouraged to attend in costume; it was very interesting with costumes rang-ing from Sweden to the Philippines. The reception was hosted by the district execu-tive board.

Monday morn-ing session began with the Presenta-tion of Colors by the American Legion Color Guard led by Captain Don Collins. Honorable Mayor Pro-Tem Fred Smith gave the members a warm welcome to his fair city.

Keynote speaker of the day was CFWC State President Vicki Holden followed by Sandy Chu, clinical Direc-tor of Rio Hondo Temporary Home, the

President’s Project. Following a deli-cious lunch the club presidents gave their annual reports.

Monday evening brought the Parade of Presidents followed by dinner. After dinner entertainment was provided by the All Star Brass Band from Mayfair High School conducted by Jeff de Seriere. This group specializes in brass, jazz, symphonic, wind ensemble, and orchestra, an extraordinary talented group of young adults.

After Presentation of Awards was

the Installation of New officers with Ste President Vicki Holden serving as Installing Officer. New officers included President, Suzanne Seager; 1st VP Dean, Barbara Briley Beard; 2nd VP Membership, Laura Orapeza; 3rd VP Programs, Allison Babcock; Ways & Means, Betty Bates; Recording Secre-

tary, Phyllis White; Barbee Heiny, Cor-respondence Secretary; Treasurer, Jean Barrera; Financial Secretary, Joanne Witt; Public Relations, Helen Brown; Parliamentarian, Alice Allen. Naomi Passillas of the Norwalk Woman’s Club will serve as President’s Aide.

Tuesday was another day of workshop with CFWC 1st VP Kathy McGraw speaking on the upcoming changes GFWC is bringing into practice during GFWC National President Car-lene Gardner’s reign. Her talk was on

“Change is good,” she proclaimed. “Change is seeing opportunities and embracing them.”

After lunch followed by a Fashion Show put on by Draper’s & Damon’s there were more awards given out. These awards are based on the point system with Downey winning the Spirit Award; Norwalk the Chimes, and Paramount going home with Perpetu-al Clock Award.

The District and Clubs wish to thank the entire staff of the hotel for their many courtesies. An extra big thank you

goes to the male staff, along with Sam McDougal, who served as escorts for the models onto the runway during the fashion show. Sam is the very accom-modating husband of former district president Betty McDougal. We give him extra kudos for being such a good sport.

LCD Treasurer Betty Walter; Former LCD President Lynn Hutton; Former State President Geri Boone

Thank you Hawaiian Gardens volunteers

Just wanted to let everyone know that thanks to the hard work of all our community volunteers and the support of the community itself, our 1st Neigh-borhood Watch Public Safety Recogni-tion Night event was a huge success.

I have to admit, given that this was our first attempt at organizing such an event and that we only had a few short weeks to pull it off I was more than a bit concerned whether the community would respond to our efforts. However, even with the bad weather and Artesia High School having an event on the same night we had over 250 people come out to show support for our local Fire Dept. and Sheriff Officers. It only goes to show as I've always believed, this community can and will come to-

gether for a wonderful cause. Hopefully this is just the start of many more nights of celebration and reflection of all the good this community has to offer.

Thanks again to all of our commit-tee members, business sponsors Hawai-ian Gardens Casino, Tri-City Hospital, Bears & Roses, and many of our city employees who donated their own time to help make this night a success.

On another note I would like to take the time to update you on a few pro-grams we are working on....

Community Gardens: This past weekend we opened our first commu-nity gardens in our city at the corner of Violetta/226th St. this is an opportunity for our residents to spend some time together as they plant and harvest fresh fruits and vegetables which they can enjoy with the pride of sharing the fruits of their labor with their friends and fam-ily. Just as importantly it can hopefully be a step towards introducing more

healthy foods into our diet by replacing processed food with fresh produce.

Mentoring Program: We are cur-rently seeking adults wishing to give back to the community by volunteering to become mentors to members of our youth. We are working in conjunc-tion with an organization called "Youth Mentoring Connection" who has a long record of success because of their struc-tured curriculum and training for both mentors and mentees. YMC will be there for support throughout the length of the program. Anyone interested please contact our Human Services Dept. at 420-2641.

Thanks again for all your support.

Sincerely, Mike Gomez

Hawaiian Gardens residents say goodbye to friend at Public Safety recognition pot luck dinnerBy Jerry Bernstein

It was a neighborhood potluck din-ner, which in Hawaiian Gardens trans-lates into a citywide event. Not only did it bring together residents of this city, it was their way of saying goodbye to a friend, Sheriff Detective Ernest Billie, who upon his recent promotion to Ser-

geant, was being reassigned. It was also an opportunity to thank the city’s law enforcement officers and firefighters for

making the city a safe place to live. The Sergeant was instrumental along with Tri Cities Hospital Mary Lou Landes in o0rganizing the Night Watch program in the city.

More than 200 residents gathered in the community room of the C Robert Lee Recreation Building. Mayor Victor Farfan, Mayor Pro Tem Michi Canada, and Councilman Mike Gomez wel-comed everyone. Emphasizing the city’s

diversity the Pledge of Allegiance and Invocation was said in three languages – English, Korean and Spanish.

Mayor Farfan intro-duced members of the Fire Department and members of the Sheriff Department that serve Hawaiian Gardens. Pointing to the repre-sentatives present, he said with their help our residences and property are protected, our streets are safer but most of all their working with you and the Neighborhood Watch program is what is making Hawaiian Gardens a place we want to live and work in.

Sergeant Billie said he would miss Hawaiian Gardens and its people. “You are responsible for where we are today,” he stated. “Cooperation and unity make us strong. “ Billie charged the residents to go forward and make Hawaiian Gardens what it was intended to be.’

Sergeant Billie receives congratulations upon his pro-motion from (l-r) City Administrator Ernesto Marquez, Mayor pro tem Michi Oyama Canada, Mayor Victor Farfan, and Councilmember Mike Gomez.

A Sublime SONYC Experience By Chris Callard

There is something about sitting in a concert hall, listening to a group of classical musicians, that just seems to connect you to the history of the world.

At least that was how it felt watch-ing the String Orchestra of New York City (SONYC) at the Cerritos Center last Saturday evening. This group of 11 musicians on violin, viola, cello and bass provided a rousing and beautiful program full of style and grace.

The first selection, Don Quixote Suite by Georg Philip Telemann, was in turn bracing and gentle, and altogether enchanting and engaging.

Next up, William Walton’s Sonata for Strings, presented a strong sense of drama with much interplay between instruments, building up remarkable tension amid a rousing ebb and flow.

After the intermission we were treated to Chamber Symphony by Dmi-tri Shostakovich, a churning, whirling maelstrom of emotion (oh, those Rus-sians!). From the audience it was like watching a play, a theatrical experience with the sentiment of the music com-bined with the faces and body language of the players, all completely entranc-ing.

The musicians were, it has to be said, adorable. Each in their distinctive way looked like what young classi-cal musicians should look like, in the mind’s eye. It was Central Casting, but with actual award-winning talent.

The synchronicity of the players was transcendent. The subtlety was moving, the passion contagious.

And a word of technical kudos to the theater’s staff – the sound was clear and perfectly balanced, which paired nicely with the precise and calibrated perfor-mance.

Performing Arts Scholarship winners entertain guests at Cerritos CenterBy Larry Caballero

Hundreds of Cerritos friends, family and supporters were not disappointed when the nine 2010 Friends Performing Arts Scholarship winners entertained them Apr. 25 at the Cerritos Center. The Friends Scholarship Program began in 1999 and has been a tremendous suc-cess awarding more than $160,000 to 88 winners.

The process to select Scholarship

winners is a lengthy one that culminates in a live performance on the main stage of the Cerritos Center for the Perform-ing Arts. There are five categories that are considered: Classical Voice, Dance, Drama, Instrumental Music and Musical Theatre. This year’s recipients were:

•Myungjin Ahn, winner in Instru-mental Music (piano)

•Linda Edsinga, winner in Instru-mental Music (piano)

•Alexander T. Hahn, winner in In-strumental Music (saxophone)

•Morgan Hurst, winner in Dance•Yul Kim, winner in Instrumental

Music (harp)•Johnathan Ryan McCullough, win-

ner in Classical Voice•Daron Pons, winner in Dance•Harold Oliver Wise IV, winner in

Drama•Melissa Zgouridi, winner in Clas-

sical VoiceClassical piano players included

Ahn who played the dramatic Sonata in F minor, Op. 57 by Ludwig van Beetoven, and Edsinga who played the Ballade in G minor, Op. 23 by Frederic Chopin. Blues player Hahn played My

Romance by Richard Rogers & Oleo by Sonny Rollins.

Modern dance winner Hurst per-formed a provocative Stay, choreog-raphy by Kayla Kalbfeich, music by Denali.

Kim played a beautiful Fantaisie by Marcel Grandjany, and McCullough sang Deh, vieni alla finestra from Don Giovanni by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Ideale by Francesco Paolo Tosti.

Pons danced gracefully to “Siegfried solo” from Swan Lake, Act III, music by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, and an original Next Step, choreography by Pons.

Wise performed a dramatic “Marc Antony Speech” from The Tragedy of Julius Ceasar by William Shakespeare, and an amusing “the Crew” monologue from the movie Big Fish written by John August.

Zgouridi sang a powerful Wie Melo-dien by Johannes Brahms and a lively Habanera from Carmen by Georges Bizet.

Each winner received a scroll from the Board of Supervisors Office of Don Knabe, a Proclamation from the City of Cerritos presented by Mayor Joseph

Cho, and the presentation of Scholar-ships by Gary W. Hopkins, Ph.D., Presi-dent, Friends Board of Directors.

“The Scholarship Program is designed to assist talented high school seniors who wish to pursue a career in dance, music or theatre. Whether their goal is to work on stage or to become a teacher, the scholarships support all careers that bring the arts into the community,” said Gloria Kappe, V. P. Education/Scholarship, Friends Board of Directors.

“It is our belief that talent must be nurtured if we are to fill our stages with great artists in future years.”

The Friends raises almost one-third of its funds through Special Events such as the Friends’ 17th Annual Gala Apr. 10, its biggest fundraiser of the year, that raised about $70,000 and enter-tained guests with an “elegant evening of dinner in the theatre, silent and live auctions, and world-class entertain-ment.”

Los Cerritos Center adds Lazy Dog Cafe to expansion line-up

Just days from its anticipated open-ing date of May 7, 2010, Los Cerritos Center today announced that another new name, Lazy Dog Cafe, will join the line-up for the center's new expan-sion.

When the expansion opens on May

7, Los Cerritos Center will introduce a new, 139,000-square foot Nordstrom store and 36,400 square feet of new in-line stores, including already announced retailers, True Religion, M.A.C Cosmetics, Foreign Exchange, Love Culture, Carlton Hair and Vision Shoes. Lazy Dog Cafe plans to open in 2011.

"Our expansion at Los Cerritos Center is about more – more fashion, more dining, more brands – in response to strong demand from this market. Lazy Dog Cafe will help us offer a more complete experience for shoppers and another great dining option," said Ken

Kraus, property manager for Los Cer-ritos Center.

The Lazy Dog Cafe at Los Cer-ritos Center will be the eighth location of the Southern California concept that combines a comfortable, contemporary atmosphere with an internationally-inspired menu.

Los Cerritos Center continues to demonstrate a strong draw for new re-tailers. Most recently, Forever 21 chose Los Cerritos Center for one of its largest stores to date, a new, 86,000-square foot department-store concept that opened in January 2010 in the former Mervyns space. Once Nordstrom opens in its new location, the original Nordstrom building at the shopping center also will offer new opportunities for additional retail uses.

The new stores will open at 10 a.m. Friday, May 7. The shopping center will celebrate the new expansion with a "Light Up Cerritos" event at 7 p.m. on Friday to introduce a new sculpture by Brian Tolle, a well known creator of public art who is a faculty member at the New School in New York City. Shoppers may also enter a $10,000 sweepstakes at www.InspireYourStyle.com through May 24, and enjoy gift-with-purchase offers and a special Spring Essentials Savings Guide May 7 - 9.

Children dressed in yellow and blue robes took their first step toward Kindergarten, as they graduated from Artesia Park Preschool on the evening of April 23. Because of the economic crisis, the City of Artesia chose to close the preschool program, and so this graduation marked the last preschool class for the foreseeable future. The City’s waste hauler, Consolidated Disposal Services, donated $1000 to the event.

Nick Kim, a Cerritos resident and Cerritos Park and Recreation Commis-sioner is also active in Buena Park with the Chamber of Commerce there, where he and his wife own a Subway restau-rant.

Nick’s Subway of Buena Park, 8241 La Palma Ave. (near Kohl’s), has re-ceived the “Award of Excellence,” five years in a row, from the County of Or-ange Environmental Health Division for consistently maintaining exception-ally high food safety and sanitation stan-dards.

“It’s a very difficult award to receive because you have to be so good on a consistent basis and put food safety at the fore front of your business,” Orange County Health Care Agency Program manager Mike Haller said.

Co-owner Nick Kim is very pleased with the award. “Very few people receive it two or three years in a row - let alone five years in a row,” Kim said. “This is better than an ‘A’ rating on the window of a restaurant. It’s very good news – it’s almost a perfect rating from the Health Department.” He credits his wife, Julie for the restaurant’s high achievements.

“My wife’s character is one of clean-liness,” Nick Kim said. “She maintains and keeps the restaurant in the up-most clean atmosphere and she is the one who runs it most of the time.”

“We pride ourselves on having fresh vegetables and meat and we feel very

Vehicle burglaries increased, residential and commercial burglaries remained the same, and robberies and vehicle thefts declined. There were 285 calls for service, up from 267 the previ-ous week. The 2010 weekly average in calls for service is now 294.

One robbery was reported on Wednesday April 21 at 7:00 p.m. after a female juvenile had been walking on Norwalk Boulevard at the 91 Freeway. A male juvenile suspect grabbed her cell phone and fled to an awaiting vehicle.

Three residential burglaries were logged, which is the same total from the week before. Two doors were forced open and a window was shattered. A laptop computer, a DVD player, a computer, jewelry, and a shopping bag containing worthless papers were stolen. The new 2010 weekly average in resi-dential burglaries is 2.2.

We remind residents to make an “exit check” each time they leave

the home. Make sure that all doors and windows are secured, even if the weather is warm. Don’t present an opportunity for a burglar to enter your home with ease. When you return, you can “air out” the residence in a short period of time. This is a much safer practice than finding valuable property stolen when you get back.

There were three commercial bur-glaries reported, also the same as the previous week. A lock was removed on a fitness center locker where a wallet, cash, and credit cards were taken. Two closed businesses were also targeted af-ter a door was pried and a window shat-tered. Computers and monitors were the items missing. The 2010 weekly average in commercial burglaries is 2.8.

Vehicle burglaries increased from two cases the previous week to seven last week. High-volume commercial parking lots were the sites of four of the crimes. Five of the vehicles were SUVs. Three GPS units were reported stolen. The new 2010 weekly average in vehicle burglaries is 6.4.

Think twice about the property you leave in your vehicle, and especially an SUV. If it is valuable and important to you, consider leaving it at home or

taking it with you when you exit the vehicle. Valuable items left within the passenger compartment make it just too easy for the thief

Vehicle thefts dropped from seven to four last week. High-volume commer-cial parking lots were the crime scenes in three. Two SUVs, a Honda, and a motorcycle were involved. The 2010 weekly average in vehicle thefts is now 4.9.

There was no information to suggest that any of these vehicles were equipped with any type of anti-theft device. While transportation is a frequent cause of vehicle thefts, Hondas and Toyotas are often taken for parts. Consider a steering wheel locking device that serves as a good visual deterrent.Events

The next Neighborhood Watch Town Hall meeting will be held at the Cerri-tos Senior Center (South Street and Ely Avenue) on Wednesday June 9, 2010, at 7:00 p.m. Those in attendance will be briefed on crime information in the area and learn more about how to better prepare for a natural disaster and better protect themselves from being victimized by crime. We look forward to seeing you there.

sure we have enough information. He said on the surface the bill-looked good, but there might be some unintended re-sults. Barrows cited concerns expressed by the attorney’s for California Asso-ciation of Counties and Urban Counties Caucus; He said he would like time to look into those concerns.

Councilmember Laura Lee said the examples raised by Assemblyman Men-doza would not necessarily occur in Cer-ritos following a city council election because a newly elected councilmember is sworn in a few days after the election has been certified.

She then made the motion for ap-proval that was seconded by Mayor Jo-seph Cho.

Councilmember Carol Chen asked if the existing council approved a contract, did that mean it would not be binding until the new member was sworn into office? I would think the vote would be by majority rule, not dependent on a new member joining the council.

Chen said she thought the matter was put on the agenda for discussion purpos-es only and for further study.

City Councilmember Jim Edwards asked City Attorney Mark Steres if he could see where this measure could tie the hands of the city. Is it advantageous or disadvantageous? Steres said the way it is written if a new councilmember were elected, a contract that was approved by the old council would not go into effect until the new councilmember was seated. If there were two or three openings then the outcome could change.

He said the amendment to the bill

approving contracts under $20,000 would not be subject to the bill if they were completed by the time the new member(s) was sworn in. If they weren’t, then the amendment would not cover the contract. He also noted the resolution also governs appointments.

Councilman Edwards said the special election in Cerritos was one in 54 years. He said most of our appointment has al-ternates so our representation on the dif-ferent board would not be effected.

Mayor Cho said he believes the bill will protect local governing bodies from long-term contracts made after an elec-tion but before new members are seated.

In other business the council awarded a contract to Pave West of La Habra in the amount of $349,534 for street im-provements in Equitable Road, Betten-court Street and Struikman Road from Edwards Road to Marquardt Avenue.

a year. The Mayor was also pleased that the City now has the largest reserves in its history while not having to cut back on services to the community. “We even expanded some of them, especially those for our seniors.”

Shanahan was pleased that none of the Top Ten businesses in the City closed its doors in 2009. BP/Arco and ADP are two of the largest businesses that were able to make a profit during these tough economic times.

“La Palma’s officials and staff can be proud of its many accomplishments dur-ing the year,” said Shanahan, “includ-ing a 24 per cent drop in crime over the past year and preventing the closure of a Distinguished School, Steve Luther El-

ementary, because the City and parents worked together effectively to keep it open.”

Last year, La Palma officials and staff had chosen a list of 13 goals that they hoped could be completed in a timely manner. Shanahan reported that presently all 13 have been completed or are in progress to be completed soon. The list included retaining the Top Ten businesses, improving and rehabilitating local community and shopping centers, granting a permit fee holiday for resi-dents who want to remodel or improve their homes, beautification projects such as planting trees in the city, and the paint-ing of all of the arterial walls.

Shanahan announced that progress is being made in repairing the street gut-ters, curbs and sidewalks and providing more up-to-date sports facilities for resi-dents of all ages.

The Mayor was proud to announce

that La Palma and her sister city Hanam, Korea have continued to build a stronger bond, and representatives from both cit-ies have been pleased with the progress. Other improvements included publish-ing an award winning quarterly newslet-ter and installing two electric Reader-boards used to communicate to residents about future community events.

Shanahan also noted that Business Week magazine listed the City as the Best Affordable Suburb in California and concluded, “Maybe we’re headed into less interesting times. La Palma has a bright future so long as our resi-dents, businesses and local government continue to focus for a brighter tomor-row as we have been doing for the last 55 years.”

SUBURBAN LEAGUE SOFTBALL

Cerritos pleased with important victory, coach “very disappointed” with executionBy Loren Kopff

The Cerritos softball team got the victory it needed last Friday against Nor-walk to stay alive for the fourth and final automatic playoff spot in the Suburban League. But don’t think for one minute that head coach Bob Medina was ready to celebrate.

Prior to the back end of the home and home series with the Lancers, Medina told his team he wouldn’t be satisfied un-less they score 12 runs. The Lady Dons fell four runs short and barely staved off a late Norwalk comeback in an 8-6 victory. What this means for both teams is that they have split the season series and they are even in runs scored at 8-8. It won’t be determined until a later date what the next tiebreaker is according to the league con-stitution.

Cerritos (9-12 overall, 3-5 in the league) came out blazing, scoring six runs in the bottom of the first and pounding out six of its dozen hits for the game, the third highest hit production of the season. But what Medina also witnessed was his team commit three costly errors in the game and as he put it, “stupid mistakes that were uncalled for”. Missed signs and poor execution, especially when Cerritos had the bases loaded with one out in the third, led to Medina’s displeasure.

“Regardless of what we tell the kids, regardless of what we’re doing, I think they were so worried about messing up

sometimes that they messed up,” Medina said. “We had about five signs that we missed.”

After losing 2-0 earlier in the week, the Lady Dons wasted little time in ha-rassing Norwalk senior pitcher Elizabeth Jimenez, who was making her second start of the season. Jimenez pitched to five batters, giving up three hits and five runs before Norwalk head coach Paulette Gasporra called on junior pitcher Cassan-dra Caro.

The Lady Dons weren’t fazed by the change because they collected three more hits in the inning. It was Caro who had picked up a two-inning save when Nor-walk beat Cerritos. But this time around, the hosts ended with nine hits off of Caro.

“I know everybody in our league will tell you we don’t like playing each other back to back but when you see a team once, you make your adjustments,” Gasporra said.

“We prepared for fast pitching, we prepared for slow pitching,” Medina said. “It didn’t matter. I don’t care what they are. We have to be able to adjust to who-ever and whatever. We planned for both of them.”

As fast as Cerritos jumped all over the Norwalk pitching, the Lancers were poised to do the same against Cerritos freshman Kaylilani Minami. With one out in the top of the third, Caro singled and junior designated player Alexis Velazquez earned a walk. Following a strikeout, Mi-nami surrendered three straight singles, including a two-run hit from junior catch-er Claudia Torres. The Lancers (9-14, 3-5) scored five runs in the frame but the Lady Dons answered in their half when soph-omore third baseman Alyssa Marquez singled, advanced on an error and went to third when sophomore second baseman

Drianna Drulias was hit by a pitch on a controversial call to load the bases.

On the very next pitch, sophomore catcher Sarah Smith was hit as well to bring in Marquez but a fly out and a dou-ble play ended what could have been an-other huge inning for the Lady Dons, who needed to beat Norwalk by at least three runs to own a temporary tiebreaker.

The score remained 7-5 until the sixth when freshman first baseman Miki Oka-zaki singled and came home on a double from freshman designated player Bianca Espinosa. Part of the reason why the Lady Dons were holding their own in the game was the exceptional work behind the plate from Smith. She threw out a runner at sec-ond in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings as Minami faced the minimum during that span.

“[Mayfair catcher Jessica Roper] has a great bat over there and I know Jess very well but Sarah is probably the best young, upcoming catcher in the league,” Medina said. “I really do think so.”

Caro would lead off the top of the seventh with a single to left, her third hit of the game, and moved to second on a fielder’s choice when a botched double play attempt occurred. That set the stage for senior first baseman Courtney Fischer, who singled in Caro and moved to second on an error. However, Minami was able to get the next three batters and preserve the victory. Norwalk junior center fielder Lorraine Fitzgerald had a pair of hits as the Lancers will visit Artesia today and Mayfair on Wednesday in the second to last game of the regular season.

“We go game by game because you never know if somebody is going to drop a game,” Gasporra said. “Every game to us is important and they know that. My girls have been around long enough to know where we stand as far as league is

concerned.”Espinoza went three for four while

Drulias, Marquez and Okazaki all added a pair of hits as Cerritos will host La Mirada on Wednesday in its second to last series of the regular season.

“We’re getting there; we’re going to get there,” Medina said. “I think we’ll fight and scratch. La Mirada, I think, is a better chance for us. If we can come out and play like this [offensively], we can beat La Mirada.”

SUBURBAN LEAGUE BASEBALL

Norwalk sees familiar winning pattern against Artesia, keeps playoff hopes aliveBy Loren Kopff

If Norwalk High School charged ad-mission to its baseball games, fans would definitely get their money’s worth at their home games, especially Suburban League games. For the third straight home con-test, the Lancers rallied in the late innings to escape with a one-run victory.

This past Wednesday, Artesia senior pitcher Geovanni Vidal hit junior second baseman Skyler Bautista on the first pitch with the bases loaded which allowed se-nior catcher Ryan Martinez to score the winning run as Norwalk beat the Pioneers 4-3 in eight innings. The victory allowed Norwalk, winners of five straight games, to move one step closer to its first playoff trip since 2006. The team is now 10-11 overall, 6-3 in the circuit.

On Apr. 16, Norwalk head coach Ru-ben Velasquez saw his team beat John Glenn 7-6 with a bases loaded hit batter

in the bottom of the seventh. Five days later, the Lancers rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh to edge Cerritos 5-4. And against the Pioneers, the hosts scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game. The win avenged a season sweep by the Pioneers last season which basically cost the Lancers a trip to the playoffs.

“My guys have been showing some heart the last few weeks and really dig-ging down deep trying to figure out a way to win,” Velasquez said. “We’ve had some things go our way and have some things not go our way. In the end, we’re coming out with “W’s”.

Vidal entered the bottom of the seventh having thrown 91 pitches but immediately gave up an infield single to sophomore left fielder German Vasquez and a single to senior designated hitter Chris Hernan-dez. A sacrifice followed by a run scoring groundout pulled the Lancers within a run. But senior shortstop Moises Acosta launched a double deep to left field, close to 375 feet away to bring in Hernandez.

After the Pioneers threatened to score in the top of the eighth, Vidal walked Martinez to lead off the bottom half of the frame. Later on with two outs and runners on second and third, Hernandez singled to left to load the bases. Hernandez finished with three of Norwalk’s 10 hits.

“We dropped him down a little bit in the lineup because he’s been struggling at times,” Velasquez said. “But I got what I wanted to see out of him, not so much the hits but at least making decent contact.”

“We had opportunities and we could have won it,” said Artesia head coach Mi-chael Gaoghagen.

Artesia had trailed 1-0 until the top of the sixth when junior designated hitter Jose Esparza and senior left fielder An-thony Johnson deposited base hits to left field. Following a fly out, junior catcher

Jeff Gunter sent a deep fly ball to left to plate Esparza. Senior second baseman Ty-ler Guerra then reached on an error which allowed Johnson to touch home plate.

The Pioneers (7-13, 3-4) thought they had added an insurance run off of Nor-walk senior ace Jonathan Villalpando in the next inning when junior shortstop Os-baldo De La Rosa singled and eventually scored on Esparza’s second hit in as many at bats. But they couldn’t add on in extra innings despite having two on with two outs.

Villalpando was staked to a 1-0 first inning lead when Martinez tripled in se-nior right fielder Juan Camacho. After that, Vidal would scatter four hits over the next five innings and did not have a run-ner reach third. Meanwhile, Villalpando worked the first five innings of two-hit ball, striking out five, dodging a scoring threat in the third and getting a double play in the fourth. Villalpando finished with 124 pitches, improved to 5-3 on the season and threw his fifth complete game, third in succession.

“He started leaving the ball up a little bit and whether he wants to admit or not, he was getting a little tired,” Velasquez said of the late innings. “He had a couple of pitches that weren’t working for him consistently. He tried to dig down too deep.”

Vasquez and junior third baseman Johnny Lopez each had a pair of hits as Norwalk will visit Artesia today and an-other win will not only further enhance its chances of finishing in third or possibly in second place, but further put the Pioneers on postseason life support. A Norwalk win plus a Mayfair loss to La Mirada would also put the Lancers in third place, ahead of Mayfair who they will visit on Wednesday.

For the Pioneers, who had won five of

their last nine before falling to Norwalk, they will host Bellflower on Wednesday. They were coming off a season sweep over John Glenn and are looking to reach the playoffs for the first time since 2007.

“I think they knew that if they took care of the first game, there’s pretty much any position that could basically happen in the playoff [hunt],” Gaoghagen said. “Now we know we have to beat them [today] and then take care of business the rest of the way to move on up.

“Offensively we haven’t been too bad,” Gaoghagen added. “The pitching has been a lot better and our defense has picked up. We’re definitely showing signs of improvement. It’s just that it should have been earlier.”

SAN GABRIEL VALLEY LEAGUE SOFTBALL

Gahr’s defense falls apart again, throws away crucial game By Loren Kopff

PARAMOUNT-The margin for error, no pun intended, is shrinking for Gahr’s softball team if it wants to make the play-offs. When the second half of the San Ga-briel Valley League season commenced on Apr. 29, the Gladiators had seven games remaining in the regular season but three important league contests.

Despite a well-pitched game from sophomore Maya Varela, the Gladiators made three more errors and Paramount scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to knock off Gahr 5-1. All of the Para-mount runs were unearned as the visitors have committed 50 errors through the first 18 games, already 13 more than last sea-

son.“The biggest thing is we’re not finish-

ing games,” said Gahr head coach Mike Rogers. “We have to dive for the ball and we’re not doing that and we have to be ag-gressive and we’re not. We’re not finish-ing games; we had that game. We hit the ball extremely hard.”

Varela went through the Paramount lineup the first time with complete ease. She had thrown 33 pitches, struck out a pair and did not allow a base runner. At the same time, Pirates pitcher Yesenia Perez allowed three runners through the first five innings and got out of trouble af-ter junior second baseman Jasmine Ruiz tripled with two outs in the fifth.

But Diana De La Paz led off the bot-tom of the fourth with a base hit to cen-ter and went to third when Melissa Yepez reached on the first of the three blunders. Another error allowed De La Paz to come home and break the scoreless tie. The mis-cue proved costly because Yepez would later be caught in a run down, then Varela threw eight pitches in a nearly perfect fifth inning.

“She’s worked hard, she stepped her game up, and she’s pitching four or five times a week right now,” Rogers said. “She’s only going to get better. She’s a sophomore and she grew up a little bit today.”

The Gladiators (5-13 overall, 2-3 in league), who were blanked by the Pirates 10-0 earlier in the season in a Downey Tournament contest, got on the board in the sixth when Ruiz singled with one out and stole second. She would score on a and stole second. She would score on a triple from senior shortstop Olivia Arre-dondo. But the defensive woes turned up again in the bottom half of the frame.

With two outs, Marina Quijano reached on an error that would have been the third out. Consecutive singles to the outfield, a fielder’s choice and one more base hit to the outfield ended Varela’s day, but not before Paramount tacked on the insurance runs.

Gahr tried to make a rally in the sev-

enth when junior right fielder Erica Wil-lig and senior pinch hitter Erica Jackson each singled with two outs. Ruiz went two for three and increased her season average to .500 and the team got five for the game. Ruiz has reached base in all but two games this season.

Gahr, which fell to Marymount 4-1 and Banning 8-0 last Saturday in the El Segundo Tournament, began the second round of league on Apr. 28 at Downey with a four-game losing streak. It will wrap up the El Segundo Tournament with a pair of games on Saturday, then host Dominguez on Tuesday and Lynwood on Thursday in preparation for its most im-portant week of the season on May 11.

“I felt that we were the better team and we let the game slip away,” Rogers said. “Now we have a tough task ahead of us. We have to go through the second half and hopefully we can upset Warren or Downey and if we get past Paramount and they don’t upset Warren or Downey, we go to the playoffs. We have to work harder than ever right now if we want to get to the playoffs.”

lish and Julie in nursing. Nick said he chose English because he likes lan-guages. While in Korea , Nick met some of the American Peace Corp. members. “They wanted to learn Ko-rean and so I taught them Korean and they taught me English; I had a very good time with them and they moti-vated me to come to America ,” said Nick.

In 1982, the same year the couple married, Nick came to America to study and get a Masters degree in the import/export field. Julie followed Nick to the United States in 1985. “In between, I went back home only oc-casionally to visit,” Nick said.

Nick attended Chapman Univer-sity , in Orange , receiving his Masters in Business Administration.

“I came to study and stayed,” he said. “I was going to go back and teach in college – that was my goal – but somehow America changed my mind.”

Both of their children, Richard who attends UCI and Ann attending Cal State Long Beach were born in America .

Nick is the only one of his family who has immigrated to the U.S. He said when he told his parents about coming to America , they advised him not to leave Korea , that he would be lonely without family and that it would be hard, along with the fact that they didn’t have money to give him to go to school in America because his father was already retired.

“That’s okay,” he told them, “I’m young and I can make it.” He was 28 years old when he arrived in America .

“My college education in Korea helped me in America , but studying and working wasn’t easy,” Nick said. “When I came to America I thought I could work and pay my college tuition

and that it would be easy, but I worked and studied a lot. Without English I could not have made it,” he said.

He worked two jobs on campus and talked to his professor - letting him know that he needed work. In one se-mester his money was almost gone. “I can’t go back to Korea because I’ve quit my job there,” he told his advisor.

”It took five years to finish my mas-ter’s degree; it was hard - but it is a good memory,” Nick said.

His parents have visited him in America and are proud of him and say now that his decision was a good one.

Nick is active in the Buena Park Chamber of Commerce as well as the Korean Chamber of Commerce that is now working in conjunction with the Buena Park Chamber to build a bet-ter rapport in the business world of the two cultures.“I was the first president of the Korean Chamber of Commerce and helped form the Korean Chamber,” Nick said. “We have a lot of Korean businesses in Buena Park – well over 100.”

Nick’s Subway is one of the restau-rants that recently participated in the Buena Park Chamber of Commerce’s annual “Taste of Buena Park” at the Holiday Inn of Buena Park.
