Area : Total area of the site is about 865085m2 32.4% was used for Farming area 35.7% was used for Residential area Only 6.4% was for Plants and Landscape area Special elements : There’s an shrine named Takami in the South East of the Site - which can be used as a tourism purpose Climate : o Daylight period in this area is about 12 to 14 hours .The length of the day varies significantly over the course of the year. The shortest day is December 21 with 9:54 hours of daylight; the longest day is June 20 with 14:24 hours of daylight. o The probability that precipitation will be observed at this location varies throughout the year. Precipitation is most likely around February 4, occurring in 67% of days. Precipitation is least likely around May 8, occurring in 47% of days. 2. Problems Population problems o The Orio-Hibikino site has high population density in the center of the area but really sparse population density on the side of Onga’s river - a rural area . o In the future , when the population rise , there will be big migration from the center to this area . To save the “rural” property in this area , this project will provides some solutions to combine urbanization and ruralization here . And these solution can also be used for other similar sites .

LCDBC 2015 International Student Design Competition “re-RURALize the Orio-Hibikino URBAN fringe”

ECO-TOWN1. Site Analysing

Location : The chosen site is a rural area , by a side of the Onga river , in the Orio-Hibikino area , Kitakyushu .

Area : Total area of the site is about 865085m232.4% was used for Farming area

35.7% was used for Residential areaOnly 6.4% was for Plants and Landscape area

Special elements : There’s an shrine named Takami in the South East of the Site - which can be used as a tourism purpose

Climate : o Daylight period in this area is about 12 to 14 hours .The length of the day

varies significantly over the course of the year.

2. Problems Population problems o The Orio-Hibikino site has high population density in the center of the area but

really sparse population density on the side of Onga’s river - a rural area .o In the future , when the population rise , there will be big migration from the

center to this area . To save the “rural” property in this area , this project will provides some solutions to combine urbanization and ruralization here . And these solution can also be used for other similar sites .

Energy problems o The problem raised in our project is based on the development of the basic

structure , include these elements : Human-community , Nature , and the relation between Human and Nature .

o Nature provides Human Energy , Food , Resources ...; and Human waste back to Nature Sewage , Waste , CO2 , .... And after a long period of purification , these Wastes become Energy provided for Human again .However , the Purification-progress takes a really long time , plus the massive icrease of population led to the greater demand , this structure becomes unsustainable : the natural resources is exhausted , but the Human demand of Energy is still raising

o To solve this problem, we provides a solution : A part of the waste will be treated for recycling . So that the structure will be balanced and sustainable .

Page 2: LCDBC 2015 International Student Design Competition

In this project , we focus on 2 major elements are electricity and water - which are recyled from water-waste and biomass-energy .

3. Solutions Planning solutiono The solution we provided makes the distance from each residential area to the

center is the same . the center now has multi function ( service function such as school , medical , ... and communication function ) , attracts more and more people to come and live , creating good life between buildings .

Traffic Solutiono For the traffic we use 2-layer traffic seperates motor traffic and pedestrian and

bycicle route .o Limit traffic accessing the site , reduce maximum carbono This transportation model allows electric car , bicycle and pedestrian to

circulate Energy solutiono Biomass power is carbon neutral electricity generated from renewable organic

waste that would otherwise be dumped in landfills, openly burned, or left as fodder for forest fires. In biomass power plants, wood waste or other waste is burned to produce steam that runs a turbine to make electricity, or that provides heat to industries and homes. Fortunately, new technologies — including pollution controls and combustion engineering — have advanced to the point that any emissions from burning biomass in industrial facilities are generally less than emissions produced when using fossil fuels (coal, natural gas, oil). ReEnergy has included these technologies in our facilities.

o Geothermal energy is a carbon free, renewable, sustainable form of energy that provides a continuous, uninterrupted supply of heat that can be used to heat homes and office buildings and to generate electricity. Japan is in the Pacific Ring of fire , so that it has al lot of geothermal energy . We could use this energy as an Electricity source for Residential Area .

o The building use the Solar Energy to produce Electricity serving the living . Water solutiono Water used in our city is part-recycled from the water from the small river ,

storm water and the used water . A part is for using , the rest is for watering and farming

o The water drawn off to the Onga river will be filtered by the wetland4. 5 Elements for an Ecological Rural Communication

Public life : An attractive area must have a lot of public activity , space for people to communicate with each other .

Agricultural production combine with tourism : The tourist can join the work with the farmer as an tourism activity

Learn and Play : Rural space make it easier to educate children about ecology , biology , sociality ….

Trading Product : Economical activity is a part of development Cultural Activities and Festivals : Cultural events make the area’s identity
