Principal’s Message Parents:
Greetings from LCHS. With the arrival of May we
begin to think about end of year activities and events. Many
programs, assemblies, and other activities are planned for the
next few weeks and I would encourage you to keep abreast of
them by regularly checking our website. Some will be noted
here and throughout this newsletter, but a more comprehensive
list is kept on our electronic calendar.
By the time you receive this, our SOL and AP test-
ing will have begun. Each test is assigned a particular day and
students have been notified of these times. It is extremely im-
portant that students get plenty of sleep the night before, have
a good breakfast, and arrive to school on time in order to be
successful.
You have heard me mention numerous times that
there will not be summer school this summer as a result of the
budget cuts experienced by the school board. Because of that,
it is vitally necessary that students put forth maximum effort
this last few weeks in order to ensure passing their classes as
there is no opportunity for makeup this summer.
As this is the last newsletter for the year, I would,
once again encourage you to visit our calendar of events on the
website, stay involved in your child’’s day-to-day activities,
and continue to support them during this last drive toward the
end of year and all of the end of year activities and assess-
ments.
As always, I thank you for your support and coop-
eration and wish everyone an awesome finish to an already
great year.
Sincerely,
W. E. Oblas

D ECA, an association of marketing students, guided by the direction of marketing teachers, Mrs. Diane Petrella and Miss Kristen Johnson, will strive to
reach the national DECA goals to plan activities that en-courage Civic Consciousness, Social Intelligence, Voca-tional Understanding and Leadership Development. This year’s club officers are:
Four students will be advancing to the DECA International Career Development Conference in Louisville, KY April 23rd
-April 28th. Abby Campbell, after taking 1st place out of over 50 contestants, will compete in the category of Quick Serve Restaurant Management. Amie Capilongo, Jon Youst and Tyler Hayden will participate as part of the School-Based Enterprise program by making a presenta-tion on how our school store, the Raider Trader, success-fully uses the Promotional Mix in the store’s operation. Congratulations to the Advanced Marketing class for work-ing diligently on a lengthy manual to submit to National DECA that received GOLD certification for The Raider Trader! This top-level certification signifies our School-based enterprise is operated as a true business and works as an excellent “Learning Lab” for students in the Market-ing Education program. In the state of Virginia, only 14 other schools hold this honor.
In order to highlight the growing need for concern and awareness about autism, DECA recognized April as a special opportunity to educate the LCHS community about autism and issues within the autism community.
LCHS DECA will be participating for the 4th year in the Western Loudoun American Cancer Society Relay for Life to be held at Heritage High School on Saturday, June 12th. To kick off our participation, Mr. Ron Petrella, the Director of the Western Lou-doun Relay, spoke at our Raider Rally DECA meeting held on Monday, April 5th. He spoke to the group about the importance of giving back to your community and how supporting can-cer research and assistance to survivors is an excellent way to do that. Tyler Anthony, a student at LCHS and a DECA alumni member, also spoke about his successful fundraising of over $1800 last year which won him an honor and certificate for being a top Youth participant in the Western Loudoun Relay. Amie Capilongo and Abby Campbell, the club’s two civic consciousness officers will be team captains along with Mrs. Petrella.

Standards of Learning
Online TestingOnline Testing
(SOL) (SOL)
Most high schools in Virginia now administer the Standards of Learning (SOL) assessments online rather than as paper-and-pencil tests. Online testing has become the preferred method of administering SOL assessments.
From May 10th through June 7th, all high school students in Lou-doun County Public Schools will be administered their SOL as-sessments as online tests, unless it would be in the individual student’s best interest to take paper-and-pencil tests. The Virginia Department of Education has conducted numerous studies to ensure that the online tests are comparable to paper-and-pencil tests. That is, students would earn approximately the same score, regardless of whether they took the test on a com-puter or with paper-and-pencil. Also, students will have a number of different training experiences prior to actually taking an SOL test online; however, for students or parents who are uncomfort-able with online SOL testing, a paper-and-pencil version of the test will be made available. If you would like more information about online SOL testing, you can download to your home computer a “tutorial.” This is about a 10 minute “video,” with either accompanying sound or on-screen text, that provides an overview of online SOL testing in a variety of different subjects. From the Loudoun County Public Schools’’ Internet Home Page (www.loudoun.k12.va.us), follow the path:
Quick Links > Testing > SOL Online Testing
Unless we hear from you otherwise, we will provide your son/daughter with online SOL tests. We will only offer a paper-and-pencil test if we are notified by May 5, 2010 that you or your son/daughter would prefer the paper-and-pencil version of the SOL test. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Taylor at (571) 252-2000 X83391.

more than 220 sophomores in attendance. During the
weekend, these “HOBY Ambassadors” will enjoy a
unique learning experience designed for participants

The LCHS Foreign Language department and LCHS community at large would like to extend a hearty congratulations to the following students for accep-tance into the Governor's Schools for foreign lan-guage. Jacob Gorman will be attending the French
academy, and Henry Brazer will be attending the
Chinese academy. Kudos and congratulations to Al-
exandra "Lesya" Chopivsky for being named an
alternate for the Russian academy.
After completing an arduous application, including numerous essays, teacher and administrator recom-mendations, oral and written tests, these students were selected out of thousands across the state to fill 30 or fewer positions. They will be spending 3 weeks this summer in Richmond studying the language, culture, food, history and literature of their chosen academies. The Foreign Language department is proud of Jacob's, Henry's and Lesya'a accomplish-
ment. We wish them all the best.

Mrs. Daniel's English classes are
finishing up their study of Romeo
and Juliet (academic) and the re-
search process (honors). They will
then be moving into their final
novel studies of the year, with Of
Mice and Menand Antigone. They
will continue their study of gram-
mar with sentence parts. Mrs.
Daniel is scheduled to leave for
her maternity leave on May 14th.
Ms. Zentz will be taking over the
remainder of the year.
On behalf of the Loudoun County High School Art Club, I would like to formally invite you to the art show to be held on May 6th, 7th, and 8th between the hours of 6:00pm and 9:00pm. Since this is the Loudoun County High School cluster art showing, artwork from local elementary and middle schools will be on display as well. The show will be featuring the work of graduating seniors, some of which will be available for purchase.
The graduating senior art students of LCHS would like to extend
an invitation to celebrate their achievements with a reception on
Saturday, May 8th from 6:00pm to 7:30pm in the Library foyer.

FUTURE BUSINESS LEADERS OF AMERICA
FBLA State Leadership Conference was held on Friday,
April 16th and Saturday April 17th. Brantley Kushner won
6th place in the Business Law completion and our Banking
and Financial Systems team consisting of Riccardo Bilen,
JD Bridges, and Anne Elsea won 3rd place.
Also in April, FBLA helped Mrs. Bullock and her Business
Management students sponsor the Reality Store for the sen-
ior class to support Financial Literacy. All of the students
that participated had a great time and now realize that “it
cost a lot of money for a house, insurance, childcare, and
food”, and “how important it is to get a good education so
you can get a good job”.
In other news, the FBLA Club will be visiting Meadow
Glenn Nursing home and will be having an end of the year
pizza party on Thursday, May 20th.
BULLOCK’S BUSINESS CLASSES: Computer Information Systems will be working with Ac-
cess, PowerPoint, Publisher, and their MCAS certification.
Adv CIS will be working with on their Adv. skills in Ac-
cess, PowerPoint, and Publisher but will also be working
on designing and producing Web Pages and will also be
working on their MCAS certification.

Accounting will be working on the accounting cycle for a
merchandising business, payroll procedures, and a simula-
tion project.
Advanced Accounting will be working on analyzing notes,
accounts payable and receivable, and a simulation project.

choices with their 1040EZ, W4 form and a banking simula-
tion project. They will end the year with a unit on commu-
nication, followed by a career/employability unit.

ties, creating a marketing strategy, communication skills,
and a business plan project for the Georgetown Café in
Leesburg.

PARENTS, CAN YOU STILL PARTY ALL NIGHT?
The All Night Grad Party needs YOU! We
are organizing volunteers for the most elabo-
rate party of the season, the one that celebrates
the hard work and achievement of the Class of
2010. The party will be held Monday night,
June 21, from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. at the Ida Lee
Recreation Center. Shifts are from 10:30 p.m.
to 2 a.m. and from 2 a.m. to 5:30 a.m.
Note to underclassmen parents: We really
need you to 'pay it forward', and volunteer to
chaperone this worthy event. As you can imag-
ine, senior parents are many times unable to
volunteer due to family visiting and the sheer
emotional and physical exhaustion of having a
child graduate. Please join us for a shift this
time, so that when your child graduates, you
can take the night off.
Please contact Megan Byle, ANGP volunteer coordinator at
[email protected] to sign up. See you there!
A HUGE thanks to all of our LCHS family members who sup-
ported the Winter Snowball! You make this event possible. And if
you have not sent in your donation yet, it's never too late!
We need you to keep our organization going The LCHS PTSA is a vibrant organization, and we always de-
liver to LCHS when asked to help. Many of the people who now
serve as officers or leaders of committees are parents of seniors
and will not have a child at LCHS next year. New officers and
committee leaders are needed for the next school year. If you
don’t want to do the job alone, grab a buddy and share the lead-
ership. We keep excellent notes about activities – most come
with a “play book” and simply need a leader to organize the vol-
unteers. To learn more about our needs, contact Karen
Knobloch, PTSA president at (703)443-8026 or via e-mail:
To volunteer, e-mail [email protected]:
PTSA Web Page Master – We need someone who can keep our
website current; will take 45 minutes each month to post our
minutes, financial reports and news.
Communications Coordinator – Help gather,
write and edit copy for the PTSA section of the
website, which takes about 45 minutes a month.
Volunteer Coordinator – Communicate volun-
teer opportunities with the PTSA membership
when help is needed (about 60 minutes a
month).
Freshman Luncheon Coordinator – We have
70 volunteers but need someone to organize the
group and make assignments. Event takes place
during Freshman Orientation this summer.
LCHS would like help covering phones in
front office
Principal Oblas has asked for volunteers to help
sort the mail and cover the phones in the LCHS
front office each day. This is a great opportunity to build your
relationship with the staff and learn how the school operates. If
you can help, e-mail [email protected].
Mark your calendars! PTSA meetings are held from 7 - 8:15 p.m. in the LCHS library. The last two of the
school year are:
May 17(we will be voting on new officers)
June 7
