Coroner: Cory Monteith died of heroin, alcohol overdose

July 16, 2013, 4:51 PM ESTVANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — "Glee" actor Cory Monteith died of an overdose of heroin and alcohol, the British Columbia coroner's office said Tuesday."There is no evidence to suggest Mr. Monteith's death was anything other than a most tragic accident," the office said in a statement.The 31-year-old was found dead in his Vancouver, British Columbia, hotel room on Saturday, after he didn't check out on time. A boy rescues a kidnapped girl while riding his bicyclein Pennsylvania. On July 15, Yahoo! Newsreportedthat 15-year-old Temar Boggs is being called a hero after he and a friend found the missing 5-year-old girl. Boggs and his friend joined the search for Jocelyn Rojas and when Boggs found her in a car, he and his friend, Chris Garcia, followed the car on their bikes. "As soon as the guy started noticing we were chasing him, he stopped at the end of the hill and let her out, and she ran to me and said that she needed her mom," Boggs told the media.The boy rescued the kidnapped girl and risked his life -- as did his friend. No one knew who kidnapped Jocelyn or if the kidnapper(s) had any weapons -- he could have easily began shooting at the teens and this happy story could have been a far different one to tell. The boys' bravery certainly paid off and little Jocelyn is home safe and sound.Police are still looking for the suspect and they hope they can find him and bring him to justice. "We’ve certainly all heard of worse stories with not-so-happy endings but this would be a much happier ending if we find the person responsible," said Manheim Township Police Sgt. Jeff Jones.The boy rescues kidnapped girl story is circulating the web today and it's nice to read about. Many times kidnapping stories doesn't end in a positive way. Hopefully the police catch this guy and this story goes full circle.

Cancer-stricken CoverGirl Talia

Talia Castellano, the inspiring cancer patient who became a YouTube beauty guru and honorary CoverGirl, died at 13 years old on Tuesday.

Castellano, who found out she was named a CoverGirl on “The Ellen Degeneres Show” in October of 2012, “earned her wings” at 11:22 a.m. on Tuesday, according to a post on Angels for Talia, her official Facebook page.“Please lift her beautiful soul, her beautiful light to heaven and please send your love and prayers to her family during this most difficult time,’’ the post reads. “God speed little one, may you be free from pain and suffering, may your soul feel the light and love that you brought to so many of us on this Earth during the short time you were here with us. We will miss you more than you will ever know baby girl.”The CoverGirl portrait of Castellano revealed by Ellen went viral after her appearance last year. Her journey of living with cancer and becoming a CoverGirl deeply touched TODAY.com readers, who made her story the most “liked” post of the year on TODAY’s Facebook page with 897,746 likes. Her appearance also impacted Degeneres, who reacted to the news on Tuesday.

Castellano dies at 13

The Orlando teen found out in August of 2012 that her cancer had spread to her bone marrow, but she continued producing her beauty videos, previewing “dramatic smoky eyes” and reviewing “the best of Urban Decay.” On July 9, Castellano posted a bucket list on Facebook that included items like “dance in the rain,” “give flowers to a stranger,” and “have a huge pool party.”

In October of last year, her dream of appearing on “The Ellen Degeneres Show’’ was realized, and Ellen surprised her with the CoverGirl announcement. She also sent Castellano to the iHeartRadio Music

Festival in Las Vegas, where the teen was able to interview the likes of Gwen Stefani, DemiLovato, Usher and Ryan Seacrest.“I met so many celebrities and had so much fun and I wouldn’t take it back for the world,” she said in a vlog posted on her YouTube channel on Oct. 11.Castellano had spent the last six months in the hospital with only a brief trip home, according to her Facebook page. Her story touched celebrities like Bruno Mars, who sent her a personalized message reading, “Your courage – inspiring. Your spirit – infectious. You –amazing! Just the way you are!!”Her fans and followers posted touching tributes to her on Facebook after learning of her death.“Crazy how someone you’ve never met can hold a special place in your heart,’’ Heather Mares Sledge wrote. “Many tears reading this. Fly high Talia.”“Tears were in my eyes when I found out the news,’’ Samantha Murphy wrote. “I really wish I could have met you. You were a true inspiration in my eyes and to everyone else. 'King of the Hill' voice actor Dennis Burkley dies at age 67

Groups sue to halt NSA electronic surveillance

Martha MendozaThe Associated PressRights activists, church leaders and drug and gun rights advocates found common ground and filed a lawsuit against the federal government to halt a vast National Security Agency electronic surveillance program.In the lawsuit filed Tuesday, San Francisco's Electronic Frontier Foundation, representing the unusually broad coalition of plaintiffs, is seeking an injunction against the NSA, Justice Department, FBI and directors of the agencies.The suit filed in federal court in San Francisco challenges what the plaintiffs describe as an illegal and unconstitutional program of dragnet electronic surveillance.The suit comes after former NSA contractor Edward Snowden leaked details about NSA surveillance programs earlier this year.NSA public affairs deferred comment on the lawsuit to the Justice Department. NJ Mayor Accused of Threat After Mistaking Neighbor for FBI

A New Jersey mayor is accused of threatening a federal agent on a public street after he mistakenly thought the agent -- who lived on his block -- was conducting surveillance on his home, days after the FBI had searched City Hall as part of a corruption investigation.Law enforcement sources tell NBC 4 New York that Union City Mayor Brian Stack thought two agents who had been parking their official vehicles near the mayor’s home along New York Avenue were watching him as part of the corruption investigation.Stack and two others allegedly charged one of the agents in the alleged Dec. 1 confrontation and began threatening him, officials and one witness told NBC 4 New York.But the federal agent was not an FBI agent and is not involved in the ongoing Union City corruption probe. Law enforcement officials said the federal agent works for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Investigations -- Immigration and Customs Enforcement.He was parking on the mayor’s street because he lived on the block. A second agent who lost his home in Hurricane Sandy was parking on the street nearby and crashing on that fellow agent’s couch until he could find a new home, officials said."The mayor's actions as an elected official were inexcusable," said New Jersey ICE Director Andrew McLees. “An HSI agent was confronted in an aggressive manner by the mayor. The agent felt threatened and appropriately reported the incident to law enforcement authorities."But Stack blamed the off-duty agent for approaching his girlfriend in a car without identifying himself. “What would any man do if their wife or their mother or their loved one is being detained in a vehicle, and the person won’t identify themselves and you see a bulge in their belt?” Stack said.Stack said he was the one who called police and rushed from a campaign event with two aides to help his girlfriend after she called him from her car concerned.“I would never threaten a federal agent,” Stack said.The feds said it was the agent who called Union City police – twice - as the mayor confronted him.Stack’s attorney said the mayor still believes federal agents were attempting to humiliate and threaten him at his own house by parking their cars with their law enforcement placards visible."This guy was absolutely harassing the mayor. What kind of official business placard is on a windshield -- why -- other than to harass the mayor at his own home?” said attorney Dennis McAlvey.

New Twinkies aren't exactly the old Twinkies

The Twinkie is back, but at what cost?

In the days leading up to Monday's nationwide relaunch of Hostess Brands' cream-filled sponge cakes, it became clear that this wasn't going to be the same Twinkies that disappeared during a brand-killing labor dispute in November. The workforce making them has been slashed, the cakes themselves are being shipped frozen in some instances, and now there's word that they might be smaller than their predecessors.

Both CNNMoney and USAToday report that the 10 pack of Twinkies that weighed 15 ounces for much of 2012 and in earlier years now weighs 13.58 ounces. As was the case with the Twinkies pre-freezing plan, the new Hostess Brands ownership group of Pabst owners C. Dean Metropolous and private equity firm Apollo Global Management(APO -2.34%) --which bought the rights to Hostess Brands in March -- blamed Twinkies' downsizing on the failing company that came before them.

The snack cake's original weight loss apparently took place just before the previous Hostess Brands went bankrupt in November. Boxes in stores at that time weighed 13.5 ounces, which makes the current boxes slightly heavier. However, considering the new parent companies are a budget beer brewer and a private equity firm, it should come as no surprise that each would try to squeeze as much sweet profit as possible out of their spongy new acquisition. Despite owning a brand that has shed its union presence and has fewer employees and factories than it did in November, the new owners saw little need to roll back the cost-cutting measures of their predecessors. As a result, folks who waited in line at Wal-Mart (WMT +0.44%) last weekend for the first bites of the revived snack cake got not the Twinkies of their youth but the Twinkies of a cash-strapped company on the brink.

The thinking is simple: The consumer outcry over Hostess' demise last year led Hostess' buyers to believe that consumers would embrace the cakes' return in any form. Since their previous owners' tweaks were designed to beef up the margins anyway, why not combine them with the reduced overhead of a downsized infrastructure and workforce and gorge on the profits?

•3/4 ounce(s) fresh lime juice•3/4 ounce(s) Basic Simple Syrup

•Ice cubes, plus crushed ice•1 1/2 ounce(s) gin•1 ounce(s) chilled club soda•1 lime wheel

Directions

1.In a cocktail shaker, muddle the parsley with the lime juice and Simple Syrup. Add ice cubes and the gin and shake well. Strain into a crushed ice–filled collins glass. Stir in the club soda and garnish with the lime wheel.

I’m just saying, these people went through every bad thing you could think of in their housing project in Chicago (allegedly Cabrini-Green). Realer than reality TV, and that’s probably why so many people adored the show, and almost 40 years after its first airing, still do. Bern Nadette StanisMiss Thelma Evans was the dream girl of many men in the country back when the show ran, and was highly sought after on the show. She was proposed to numerous times by numerous men, but only let the character Keith put a ring on it. After the show ended, the actress didn’t really show up all over the place like some of her other co-stars. She had small

guest appearances on shows like “The Cosby Show,” “What’s Happening Now” and “Girlfriends.” But what has kept the checks coming in for her are the books she writes, including Situations 101: The Good, The Bad & The Ugly, and her poetry book, For Men Only.

Ralph Carter “But mama, BOY is a white racist word!” Oh Michael Evans, always militant, always entertaining. Michael was the very smart and very ambitious little brother in the Evans family, often involved in protests and getting in trouble for his big mouth. But did you know that the man who played him was a singer? He was a disco star back in the day and even put out an album called Get it Right in ’85. But as for acting? No dice. Instead, he writes plays, including his most recent work, “Grandma’s Hands.”

Johnny Brown Bookman was the bubble-butt having super in their building who used to go toe-to-toe with Willona. He was a hot, but funny mess. After the show ended in ’79, Brown went on to do voice work for “The Chipmunks,” appeared on “227,” “The Parkers,” and even had a small role in the movie Life. His most recent role was an appearance on the show, “Everybody Hates Chris.”

Ben Powers I wasn’t a big fan of the character of Keith. Sure, he was cute, but the minute he injured his knee he flipped on the whole Evans family. You remember the episode where he slapped Thelma, right? I almost jumped through the TV! But eventually, we know that he got rid of his drinking problem, sucked it up and got a temporary job, and was lucky enough to later get a new football contract and move Thelma out of the ‘hood. After the show, Powers did a little bit of TV work (“The New Mike Hammer,” and a TV movie called “Shattered Vows”), but he left LA in the ’80s and retired from acting, and is allegedly living in Rhode Island. He’s MIA, so no up-to-date photos.

Moses Gunn Mr. Gunn’s character of Carl Dixon is important to highlight because even though he only was in a few episodes, he played a pivotal role: he was Florida’s atheist husband near the end of the show. His character was diagnosed with cancer and because of it, tries to call of their engagement. But in the end, he pulls it together, and the two move to Arizona together. In real life, Moses Gunn was an award-winning stage actor, but after the show ended, he stuck to doing a lot of big TV work. He was on “Little House on the Prairie,” “Father Murphy,” “A Man Called Hawk,” and the TV movie, “House of Dies Drear” (love that movie!). His last real role was on the show, “Homicide: Life on the Street.” Gunn passed away in ’93 after having complications due to his asthma. He was 64.

Chip Fields-HurdTalk about putting the “cra” in crazy. As Mrs. Lynetta Gordon, Chip Fields-Hurdwas the abusive mother of Penny. Though Willona begged her to seek help, after Gordon’s abuse was brought to light, she left her daughter behind, but acknowledged that her daughter deserved better before leaving. She tried to return a year later as the wife of a wealthy man, and in an effort to get her daughter back from Willona, Gordon framed her as being a bad parent. But alas, that didn’t work. In real life, we know that she’s a good mother, and the mother of actresses Kim and Alexis Fields. She’s been all over TV, including acting on “The Parkers,” “The Wayans Bros.” and “Living Single” as Regine’s(again, Kim Fields) mom. But she also is a director, and has directed episodes of “House of Payne,” “Meet the Browns,” “Hannah Montana,” “Just Jordan,” and “One on One.”

the Atlantic coast: in all, 43 out of 50 states were near record highs.New York emergency crews were dealing with a 20 percent increase in emergency calls because of the heat, NBCNewYork.com reported. An 18-year-old city council intern who fainted during an outdoor press conference on trash management had to wait 30 minutes to receive treatment. Fire department officials blamed the delay on the uptick in heat-related 911 calls.Other New Yorkers reported scattered power outages as air-conditioners were cranked up. Con Edison said it had put crews on standby for the duration of the heat wave.In Philadelphia, high temperatures spiked into the 90s for a third straight day to make the area's steamy stretch an official heat wave according to the National Weather Service.NBC10's Chief Meteorologist Glenn Schwartz points out that overnight lows, which were in the 80s, pose the most danger since older brick buildings without air conditioning aren't able to cool and dangerous heat continues to build up, which could lead to heat-related illness, and possibly death.Philadelphia health officials set up a “heatline” for elderly residents to receive help during the scorcher.Still, with almost the entire country covered in red on the weather map — the Pacific Northwest and Mountain states were baking, too — forecasters warn that the East wouldn’t get a break until Friday or Saturday.“Every day gets a little worse," Tony Gigi at the National Weather Service office in Mount Holly, N.J.,told Philadelphia Inquirer. "It gets worse on Friday. Saturday looks miserable."

Beyonce called for a moment of silence for Martin during a concert in Nashville, Tenn.

Rapper Nicki Minaj took to Twitter to express her disappointment with the ruling."And our taxes paid for that trial," she wrote. "We just paid to see a murderer walk free after killing an innocent unarmed little boy.”

Unsafe havensAfter falling for five consecutive years, violent crime was up by 1.2% last year in the United States, as measured by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which classifies murder, non-negligent manslaughter, rape, some robberies and aggravated assault as violent crimes.Based on the FBI Uniform Crime Report, the cities in this slide show below can be considered the nation's most dangerous. Many of these cities have been in bad economic shape for years, in some cases

since well before the start of the Great Recession.Economic woes prompt some residents to flee, and population decline produces a loss of economic diversity that is a contributing factor in violent crime in some cities, according to John Roman, a senior fellow at the Urban institute. Poverty rates in each of the most dangerous cities exceeded the national average of 15.9% in 2011."It is very clear that poverty, in particular, is associated with higher crime rates," explained Roman.However, the precise relationship between crime and poverty is unclear, Roman noted. "(It is) very difficult to say whether crime makes places poorer or poverty causes more crime," he said.The cities on this list also had smaller percentages of adults with a high school diploma than the national average of 86%.On its website, the FBI urges readers to be cautious about rankings based on violent-crime statistics. Such data can ignore factors that influence crime, according to the bureau, and may fail to account for different ways such crimes are sometimes measured and reported.The Urban Institute's Roman cautioned against comparing cities based on their crime rates. American family trend: More single dads raising kids

The number of single fathers raising kids solo is on the rise.In 1960, about 14 percent of single-parent households were headed by dads. Today, 24 percent, or 2.6 million households, are run by single fathers, a new Pew study shows. Among the men surveyed, the term “single father” comprised men in a variety of circumstances:Fifty-two percent are separated, divorced or widowed or never married and are living without a co-habiting partner.Forty-one percent are living with a nonmarital partner.Seven percent are married but living apart from their spouse.The study concluded that here some notable differences between single mothers and single fathers. Single fathers, on average, are younger, less educated and less likely to be white. They’re likely to be better off financially compared with households headed by single mothers.
