― What unspeakable delight, and what transports of joy swelled my bosom, when I took by the hand, onthat night, my beloved Emma—she that was my wife, even the wife of my youth, and the choice of my heart. Many were the reverberations of my
mind, when I contemplated for a moment the many scenes we had been called to pass through, the fatigues and thetoils, the sorrows and sufferings, and the joys and consolations, from time to time, which had strewed our paths and crowned
our board. Oh what a commingling of thought filled my mindfor the moment, again she is here, even in the seventhtrouble—undaunted, firm, and unwavering—unchangeable, affectionate Emma!‖

―Early in the month of August [1830] NewelKnight and his wife paid us a visit at my placein Harmony, Pennsylvania; and as neither his wife nor mine had been as yet confirmed, it was proposed that we should confirm them, and partake together of the Sacrament, beforehe and his wife should leave us. In order to prepare forthis I set out to procure some wine for the occasion, buthad gone only a short distance when I was met by a
heavenly messenger, and received the followingrevelation, the first four paragraphs of which were writtenat this time, and the remainder in the Septemberfollowing.‖ — History of the Church 1:106

The sacrament:
commemoration and shadow
― We have met to partake of the Sacrament of theLord’s Supper, and we should endeavor to draw away our feelings and affections from things of time and sense; for in partaking of the Sacrament
we not only commemorate the death andsufferings of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ,
but we also shadow forth the time when he will come againand when we shall meet and eat bread with him in the
kingdom of God. When we are thus assembled together wemay expect to receive guidance and blessings from God,from whom, the Scriptures inform us, every good andperfect gift proceeds.‖ — John Taylor, March 1870

―It is important when we need revelations, that weunderstand what channel they should comethrough? …The Lord told Oliver [Cowdery] thatJoseph was the man to receive revelations for theChurch; he [Oliver] might receive revelations for
himself, but those to the Church must come throughJoseph Smith, or the leader. If we need revelations forour guidance, what channel should they come through? …TheLord will speak to us through the head of his Church, through him
who holds the Presidency. We should all understand these
principles that we may not be deceived, and if revelations aregiven from any other source professing to guide the Church, wemay know they are not from God.

― All of us have the privilege of receiving revelations. For the Church? By no means; we cannot receiveall that are necessary for the performance of ourduties. We have here a Stake of Zion, and apresidency of this Stake. Can anybody receive
revelations for the government of this Stake?Certainly not. If any person other than the Presidency should profess to receive revelations for its government, would
you consider them genuine revelations? If so, you would bemistaken. We are entitled to the Holy Spirit to help us in the
discharge of our duties and to teach us all that is necessary for ourguidance. The Bishop is entitled to the spirit of revelation to teachhim his duties, and when guided by that spirit he will never comein collision with those who preside over him.‖

―No member of the Church has the right to publish any doctrines,as the doctrines of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, without first submitting them for examination and
approval to the First Presidency and the Twelve. There is but oneman upon the earth, at one time, who holds the keys to receivecommandments and revelations for the Church, and who has theauthority to write doctrines by way of commandment unto theChurch. And any man who so far forgets the order instituted by
the Lord as to write and publish what may be termed new doctrines, without consulting with the First Presidency of theChurch respecting them, places himself in a false position, andexposes himself to the power of darkness by violating hisPriesthood. While upon this subject, we wish to warn all the
Elders of the Church, and to have it clearly understood by themembers, that, in the future, whoever publishes any new doctrines without first taking this course, will be liable to lose hisPriesthood.‖ — Proclamation of the First Presidency and Twelve,
