Megatrends – Internet Users and IP Traffic 3
The number of Internet users worldwide continues to rise, according
to the United Nations' telecommunications agency, which says there
will be almost three billion users by the end of 2014. Two-thirds of
those users will be in developing countries.
Annual global IP traffic will
surpass the zettabyte (1000
exabytes) threshold in 2016. Global
IP traffic will reach 91.3 exabytes per
month in 2016. By 2018, global IP
traffic will reach 131.6 exabytes per
month.
Global IP traffic has increased
more than fivefold in the past 5
years, and will increase threefold
over the next 5years. Overall, IP
traffic will grow with a CAGR of 21%
from 2013 to 2018.

Megatrends – Mobile Users and Mobile IP Traffic
Overall mobile data traffic is expected to grow to 15.9
exabytes per month by 2018, nearly an 11-fold
increase over 2013. Mobile data traffic will grow at a
CAGR of 61% from 2013 to 2018. The increasing
number of wireless devices that are accessing mobile
networks worldwide is one of the primary contributors
to global mobile traffic growth. Globally, mobile devices
and connections will grow to 10.2 billion by 2018 at a
CAGR of 8%.

A wearable computer
Internet of Everything – Smart Home 7
Internet of Everything – Smart City 8
Engage with the data exhaust produced
from your city and neighborhood
Keep street clean Use real-time data collection
and alerts to let municipal
services know when a bin
needs to be emptied
Share your findings Platform for recording,
mapping, and sharing health
and environmental data
using smartphone
Receive pollution
warnings Sensors with alerts to
local residents so they
can avoid polluting local
waterways
Light streets more
effectively Provide the right level of
lighting needed by time of
day, season, and weather
conditions
Stop driving in circles Sensors, mobile apps, and real-time web
applications to find parking and reduce
pollution
Smart Meter Monitoring of electric
energy consumption . It
gathers data for remote
reporting

and integrity of a structure
Self driving car
Capable of sensing
environment and navigating
without human input
Drones Delivery drone is capable of
grabbing an object, flying to a
selected destination via GPS,
deliver the item, and fly back to
the distribution center.
Keep track of your assets Real-time sensor data from soil
moisture levels, weather
forecasts, and pesticide usage
from farming sites into a
consolidated web dashboard
Maintain & Repair Sensors installed inside
equipment will monitor if
any parts have exceeded
their designed thresholds
Internet of Everything – Smart Environment 10
Understand and
better manage the world
we currently have
Monitor pollution levels A community-led air quality
sensing system designed to allow
anyone to collect high resolution
readings of NO2 and CO
concentrations outside
Track water Motorized drifters that can be
quickly deployed in response to
unanticipated events such as
floods to track the movement of
water, contaminants, and other
conditions in waterways
Help protect wildlife Wildlife tracking collar system
