It is hard to believe I am writing the final Principal’s report for the 2014 school year. The 2014 school year certainly has been an exciting and successful year for Le Fevre High

School. At this time of year there are many school functions and activities where we reflect over the year that was and prepare for the coming school year. 2014 has been a yet another remarkable year for our school community in many ways, just some of the highlights include:

the review of the International

Baccalaureate Middle Years Program in readiness for 2015 under the guidance of our curriculum AP, Troy Barker. The level of student engagement and the results are a testament to this program.

a very successful IBMYP

Graduation Ceremony which included a display of the spectacular Personal Projects as many of our current year 10 students have participated in this program since year 6 in their former primary settings.

The work of Literacy Coach, Rachel

McLaine and Numeracy Coach Nick Kyriazis with our staff teams and development of whole school plans and improvement targets.

The success of specialized literacy

programs for students by Lina Ruggiero, Susan Kauschke and Tricia Gardner.

the welcoming of international

students representing Thailand and Bangladesh. Next year we will be welcoming students from Thailand, Finland and Japan. We have also had many educators visit and work with us including such diverse locations as Mongolia, New Caledonia, Indonesia and China.

the many

advances made in the STEM and Maritime School programs through the leadership of Rod Hunter, the

creative excellence of Thierry Herman, Learning Area leader Eddy Grzeskowiak and the ongoing trade skills development of Chris Chrisakis and Liam Narcys.

The introduction of STEM

partnerships with local Primary schools led by Eddie Grzeskowiak in collaboration with many staff has been wonderful and I especially acknowledge the support of UNISA in these programs.

the continuing success of the School

Based Apprenticeship program through the work of Vicki Bryant and Chris Houltby.

outstanding commitments by our

students to a range of community service activities through the IBMYP.

our ongoing relationship with our

the use of the Bill Davis Scholarship for Special

Education and at Risk Students to support a number of students in various activities related to their courses. on behalf of the school, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our parents, particularly the members of the Governing Council, staff, students, our industry partners and community organisations who work with us, for their ongoing commitment, support and dedication to Le Fevre High School. I am immensely proud of our school, its students and its staff. I humbly acknowledge the work of all staff and students in the achievements.

At this time I acknowledge the career of staff member Mr Mark Bullen who is going on leave next year and then retiring. He has served this school with integrity and probity for 23 years and will be very much missed by us all. Similarly I acknowledge Ms Val Thompson who will be on leave in 2015 and wish her well for this extended leave. Lyndon Stevens is retiring at the end of this year after being on sick leave throughout 2014. I thank him sincerely for his long and dedicated service to our school community. We will also be farewelling several staff members at the end of this year including Ms Rommi Parham (formerly Driscoll) who is leaving teaching to begin a new career. We also will be farewelling Ms Amy Hill who is moving to the Northern Territory, Ms Anne Cheel, Mr Colin Fraser, Ms Michelle Rappa, Mr Tim Jobling, and Ms Irena Vigar as their contracts and placements with us finish. We wish them all a wonderful future. I particularly acknowledge the outstanding work of Dani Mautama, ICT Manager, who is taking leave in 2015 and moving to Western Australia with her family. Just as important as our learning together is our social purpose as an educational organisation. As a community of learners we learn so much about the importance of working together, enjoying the special moments at school and the preparations that we are continuously undertaking in developing lifelong skills, attitudes and dispositions as successful citizens. The culture of our school is developing and in my view is maturing. The service in community we have aspired to is becoming more and more evident, the student voice with so many charitable events and most recently the Halloween day with an international theme, the students who donate blood in the red cross project and the staff members who participate in anticancer fundraising work.

There are also many individual students and their

families recognizing local and international need. We

are becoming a stronger community of givers. I

congratulate you all for this.

Please remember that the Annual General Meeting for the Le Fevre High School Governing Council will be held Monday 9th February 2015 at 7.00 pm following the welcome for new Year 8 parents which will be at 6.00pm. Please consider being a member of this important forum to involve parents and the community in the governance of the school. We are always looking for new members so please consider nominating. On behalf of the staff I wish all the members of the Le Fevre High School community a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Regards

Naval Engineering and Maritime Science Program News

The Naval Engineering courses for Stage 1 (Year 11) and Stage 2 (Year 12) students aim at presenting to students the scientific and engineering principles underlying the design of all marine machines. This program is suitable for students who are interested in applied science and engineering - some Year 12 students have enrolled for next year at the Engineering School of the Australian Maritime College UTAS (AMC University of Tasmania) more on this at the beginning of next year - as well as students simply interested in discovering the human and cultural dimensions of the maritime world. AMC has a partnership with Flinders Uni, where students have the opportunity to complete their first two years of study here in Adelaide, before heading off to Launceston in Tasmania to finish their Maritime Engineering degree. In the courses delivered in our school, applied physics is used to explore and explain current scientific issues in particular in a maritime environment. Students become aware of the significance of mathematics and science to address a range of engineering challenges. The science and mathematics studied relate to many vocational pathways. Student experience this via practical applications and through the study of some historical examples. This program centers around a practical exercise of design and construction of prototypes to test theories, by using the latest CNC laser cutting technology. Year 11s design and build remote controlled sail boats in Semester 1 and submarine exploration vessels in Semester 2, whereas Year 12 students design and build powered remote controlled scale ships. In doing so, students have the opportunity to study across two years such diverse topics as Archimedes Principle, Density, Submarine Technology, Waterlines, Displacement Curves, Stability, Righting Moments, Aerodynamics of Sails, Centres of Effort and Lateral Resistance, Optics and Electromagnetic Waves, GPS Systems, the History and Principles of Navigation, Electronics and Control Systems, Alternative Sources of Energy, Hydrodynamic Principles and so on. As part of the course, Year 11 Submarine Technologies students were invited by the REA ( Re Engineering Australia ) Foundation, to the Engineers Australia Convention last week in Melbourne where our students had the opportunity explain their work to engineers, defense and navy personal who were very interested and asked many meaningful questions. This was made possible by the Australian Submarine Corporation - ASC - taking care of the travel expenses, for which we are truly grateful. I am very happy to report that our students’ responses made us very proud indeed and that our visitors were very impressed with the level of engineering knowledge demonstrated by our students.

Changes to the Secondary Schools Tax File Number Program in 2015 The Secondary Schools Tax File Number (TFN) Program will not continue beyond 31 December 2014. This means that School TFN forms will no longer be processed beyond this date. How students can apply for a TFN from 1 January 2015 The Australian Taxation Office in partnership with Australia Post is making it easier for individuals to apply for a TFN. Students can now apply for a TFN online and have their identity verified through an interview at a participating Australia Post office. Applying online is the fastest and most convenient way for students to get a TFN. More information on applying online can be found at ato.gov.au by searching for 'QC27248' Students who are unable to visit a participating Australia Post office will need to complete the application form Tax file number - application or enquiry for individuals form (NAT 1432). More information about lodging this form can be found at ato.gov.au by searching for 'QC22604' The ATO will continue working with teachers to educate students about tax and superannuation. The curriculum resource Tax, Super & You is a free, easy to use, online educational resource aligned to the school curriculum of each state and territory. This resource can be accessed at taxsuperandyou.gov.au In the coming weeks we will provide more information by email on how students can apply for a TFN and the educational services we can provide. In the meantime if you require any further information you can phone 1300 130 282 between 8:00am and 5:00pm Monday to Friday.

Forensic Science At Le Fevre

Page 7

Le Fevre High became a crime scene! No not really. Late last term many students were given the opportunity to take a journey into the world of real forensic science. Education Interactive visited our school and allowed our students to solve a crime by analyzing the evidence left at a crime scene, gain exciting and practical insight into problem solving and understand how the methods and experiments they learn at school apply in the real world. Exhibits included shoe print casts, fingerprint analysis, DNA profiles, digital microscopy, toxicology, autopsy, entomology to name a few. As well as being educational and fun it also sent a clear message about cyber safety and the risks of drink spiking. Here are what some of the students thought about the experience: “It was well organized. Gave a great example of how quickly things can go wrong” Alex P. “Interesting. Good information about drink spiking in Coke cans.” Anonymous “It was fun and good to know what Forensic Scientists do in a crime scene.” Nikki “I thought today’s session was beneficial for everyone. It provided us with a situation on what can happen on social media and choosing the wrong decisions can be a threat to your life. It also was very interesting and fun.” Jayvee “A very good example of Forensic Science, allowing good insight into the field and gave useful information for exams.” Bailey “It was a great experience, besides being arrested.” David V (David played the role of the suspect.) Australian Mathematics Competition

Page 8

The Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC), sponsored by the Commonwealth Bank, was introduced in Australia in 1978. It has become the largest single mathematics event on the Australian calendar, allowing students to attempt the same tasks on the same day in about 40 countries. It has become a truly international event, with countries throughout the Pacific Ocean and South East Asia. On 7 August this year 67 students from 3 high achieving classes of Year 8, 9 and 10 at Le Fevre High School participated in this competition. 1 Distinction, 1 Prudence Award and 15 Credit certificates were earned by our students. The Prudence Award is presented to the student who has the highest number of consecutive questions correct. The minimum number of questions is 10, starting from Question 1. Congratulations to all students participating in this competition, especially to the following students for their

excellent performance in the competition: Panayiotis (Distinction), Cooper (Credit), Taylor (Credit), Abhira (Credit

and Prudence Award), Finn (Credit), Caleb (Credit), Nikita (Credit), Cathal (Credit), Bronte (Credit), Molly (Credit),

Mitchell (Credit), Janelle (Credit), Ryhan (Credit), Trey (Credit), Lindsay (Credit) and Lachlan (Credit). Special

thanks to Nick Kyriazis accompanying Abhira to the Award Ceremony held in the Memorial Hall, St Peters College.

Vocational Pathways

National Vet Prize: The Australian Vocational Student Prize gives national recognition to achievements in vocational training completed in secondary education. The prize promotes the value of gaining vocational skills while at school.

Each year schools are invited to nominate students who have chosen to do practical, vocational training while completing their senior secondary studies. This training may be either through an Australian School-based Apprenticeship or a nationally recognised VET course.

Congratulations to the following Le Fevre High School students who have been nominated for the award this year:

Callyen Sykes – Certificate III Allied Health Assistance

Cameron Seery – Certificate II Automotive Servicing Technology

Jasmin Broadbridge – AsbA – Certificate II Warehousing Operations

These students have all worked incredibly hard to complete their training and also achieve a high degree of academic success at Le Fevre High School. Each has successfully finished Year 12, attaining both the South Australian Certificate of Education and their respective qualifications. We wish them all the best for the nomination process, but also for happy, successful futures.

Vocational Options for 2015: If your son or daughter is thinking of a vocational pathway beyond school it may be possible that they commence this while still at Le Fevre High School. There are opportunities available in industries such as: Engineering, Creative Industries, Health & Community Services, Construction, Automotive, IT and Transport. I would love to hear from you if you would like to know more, want to discuss possibilities or have any questions. Please email [email protected] or call the school. Sean Carey, VET Coordinator.

Aquatics Camp

On Wednesday the 3rd

of December Ben Jones, Ben Earl, Anne Cheel and I took 41 Year 8 to 10 students to Murraylands Aquatic Centre, Murray Bridge. Here the students spent three days participating in fun filled aquatics activities including knee boarding, water skiing, sailing, kayaking, canoeing, windsurfing and small boat handling. The student’s behaviour and commitment was exemplary and both the instructors and caterer said they were the “best group of the year.” I look forward to seeing the students attending next year as well as any other first timers. The continued growth of the Trade Schools for the Future program is reinforcing that more students are taking advantage of the flexible option to commence their desired career pathway while completing their SACE. Employers are also continuing to appreciate the many advantages in commencing an apprentice or trainee in a part-time school-based capacity. 2014 End of School Year Fast Approaching! The years seem to go by quicker than the last and this year has certainly been no exception! It is near the time of the year when both employers and students are considering recruitment and employment options in the workforce. School-based Apprenticeships have become a preferred option with many employers who are seeking to train and take on part-time staff. Year 10 and 11 students, who know their employment pathway, will have good opportunities through work experience to approach employers for apprenticeship and traineeship prospects. Employers and students benefit with School based Apprenticeships. The employer has the opportunity of recruiting apprentices by negotiating the hours that best suit their business needs and they can receive additional government financial support. For students, it is a chance to showcase their skills and start their formal apprenticeship contract, working on average 8-25 hours per week. They have the opportunity of earning wages and at the same time, accrue credits for Stage 2 of SACE. Students who want to start a School-based Apprenticeship now, need to make sure they approach employers with their resume and with the right attitude and motivation. Resumes should be updated and include all practical and theory skills and knowledge gained through school and personal experiences. This includes description of VET courses undertaken and work experience. If students are successful in gaining a job or a work trial, they will need to contact their school’s Apprenticeship Broker, Vicki Bryant. It is the Apprenticeship Broker’s job to review the viability of the arrangement with all parties and facilitate the process. Vicki will also ensure SACE credits can be recognised and that it can be supported by the school as part of the student’s learning plan. If an employer is not seeking staff at this time, the student should leave a copy of their resume with them. Staffing situations can change within a week and to have an applicant’s contact details handy is a great advantage. What are the benefits to students undertaking a School based Apprenticeship? • Paid employment while going to school • Working towards a nationally recognised qualification • Earning SACE credits • Starting your employment of choice while still at school • Likely to gain work in the local area • Not competing for a job with the rest of the State’s workforce at the end of the year - less competition to win the

apprenticeship or traineeship We sincerely thank everyone for their support throughout 2014 and look forward to another great year in 2015.

SACE results are due to be released on Thursday 18 December. More information about retrieving these results can

be found at www.sace.sa.edu.au. It can be a difficult time of year when these results and uni offers are released, or

if you are uncertain about what 2015 holds. If you would like to discuss options regarding: university entries,

securing an apprenticeship/traineeship/employment, vocational pathways or any other queries, then please contact

me. I will be available by email throughout December and January. [email protected].
