Les édifices religieux constituent en Bretagne des merveilles d’architecture. On pense non seulement aux grandes cathédrales comme à Tréguier ou à Quimper mais aussi aux innombrables petits oratoires que l’on trouve nichés dans les coins les plus reculés de la campagne.

C’est le cas de Kerfons en Ploubezre. Etabli, comme son nom l’indique en breton, dans un hameau autrefois planté de hêtres, Kerfaoues, ce petit sanctuaire, fondation des seigneurs de Coatfrec, date des XVe et XVIe siècles. Il a la forme d’un tau, le vaisseau étant flanqué au nord et au sud de deux chapelles en ailes, plan classique des monuments religieux du Trégor. La nef et la chapelle nord (premier quart du XVe siècle) sont de style ogival flamboyant et la chapelle méridionale (1559) de style Renaissance.

Un petit clocher-mur surmonte le pignon de la façade occidentale. A l’angle sud-ouest, une niche avec dais Renaissance abrite une statue de saint Yves. Le pignon méridional est surmonté d’un pinacle également de style Renaissance : C’est une sorte de clocheton carré terminé par de petits frontons triangulaires sous chacun desquels se trouve une statue. L’accès se fait du côté méridional par une porte en arc brisée. Une porte renaissance en plein cintre surmontée d’un fronton triangulaire donne accès dans la chapelle méridionale.

Au sud de la chapelle est un calvaire à fût écoté représentant à l’ouest la crucifixion et à l’est la Vierge à l’Enfant, Marie-Madeleine et saint Pierre.

La partie la plus remarquable de la chapelle se trouve à l’intérieur avec un jubé de style gothique flamboyant daté de 1485, c’est à dire qu’il est contemporain de la majeure partie de l’édifice. Il est l’oeuvre d’un atelier morlaisien. Il comprend cinq arcatures en arc brisé aigu séparées par des colonnades torsadées.

La tribune est divisée, du côté de la nef, en quinze niches dans chacune desquelles se trouvent des panneaux sculptés polychromes. Ces bas-reliefs représentent le Christ, les douze apôtres, sainte Barbe et sainte Madeleine. Au-dessus de la tribune, on voit les statues de la Vierge et de saint Jean.

La frise basse de la tribune est décorée d’anges qui portent les attributs de la Passion.

Le mobilier ancien comprend en outre plusieurs statues anciennes, dont une Annonciation du XVIe siècle et une superbe représentation de la Vierge, Notre-Dame de Kerfons. La chaire est datée de 1681 et le maître-autel de 1686. Le retable de la chapelle latérale sud (1612) est orné d’un tableau représentant saint Yves entre le riche et le pauvre.

Le jubé sculpté et peint en bois polychrome est classé monument historique depuis le 20 mars 1899, l’ensemble de la chapelle depuis le 8 juillet 1910 et le reste du mobilier depuis le 3 avril 1975.

La chapelle de Kerfons mérite son classement parmi les plus beaux jubés de Bretagne.

The religious buildings in Brittany encompassmarvellous architecture. One doesn’t just think of large Cathedrals such as in Tréguier or in Quimper but of countless small oratories as well, found nestled in the most secluded parts of the countryside.

This is the case for the Chapel of Kerfons in Ploubezre. Established, in Breton, as its name suggests, was once planted in a hamlet of beech trees. Kerfaoues, this little sanctuary, was founded by the Lords of Coatfrec and dates back to the 15th and 16th centuries. It is shaped like the Greek letter ‘Tau’, the Nave was adjoined to the North and to the South of the two Chapels in the wings, a classic design of religious monuments in Trégor. The nave and the North Chapel (the first quarter of the 15th century) are in the flamboyant gothic style, whereas the southern Chapel (1559) is in the style of the Renaissance.

A small bell gablesurmounts the pediment of the Western front. In the South-Western corner, a small cavity with a Renaissance canopy houses a statue of Saint Yves. The northern gable end is surmounted by a pinnacle also in the Renaissance style: it is a kind of square steeple made by small triangular pediments, under each of which is a statue.

Access is provided through the Northern side by an arched doorway. A semi-circular Renaissance door on top of a triangular pediment giving access into the Northern Chapel.

South of the Chapel is a Calvary, which represents on the West the crucifixion and on the East the Virgin and child, Mary Magdelene and Saint Peter.

The most remarkable part of the Chapel is found inside, with an ostentatious gothic style Chancel screen dating back to 1485.In other words, it is contemporary to the major part of the building. It is the work of a workshop in Morlaix. It is comprised of 5 arched arcades acutely separated by twisted pillars.

The gallery is separated, from the side of the Nave, it has 15 cavities and in every one of which polychrome carved panels are found. These bas-reliefs represent Christ, the 12 apostles, Saint Barbara and Saint Magdelene. Above the gallery, you can see statues of the Virgin and Saint John.

The sculpted frieze of the gallery is decorated with angels which have the very characteristics of the Passion.

The furnishing comprises of many ancient statues including an annunciation from the 16th century and a superb representation of the virgin, our lady of Kerfons. The chair dates back to 1681 and the high altar to 1686. The altarpiece of the southern side chapel (1612) is embellished with a painting representing Saint Yves amongst the rich and poor.

The sculpted Rood screen of painted polychrome wood has been classed as a historical monument since the 20th March 1899, together with the Chapel since the 8th July 1910 and the rest of the furniture since the 3rd April 1975.

The Chapel of Kerfons merits its position amongst the most beautiful architectural Rood screen of Brittany.
