.. Not only is most of this enchanting town traffic-free,but much of it has not changed for centuries. For example,to the south of Via dei Soderini and to the west of Via delleTorri is a whole mass of narrow cobbled streets whosemedieval fabric and spirit are almost perfectly intact.

Nearby, the Palazzetto dei Longobardi is as near as youcan get to an untouched medieval town house; whilst theblocks of travertine stone on the 35-metre high Torre degliErcolani beside it are so fresh they could have been cutyesterday...

As important as food is, most of us know little aboutwhere it comes from. A family of organic farmers outside

Urbino is trying to change that as all the "FATTORIEDIDATTICHE" of the Region. Children think that whenyou take milk of the cow, it is cold, not hot, because theyalways take cold milk from the fridge, says MonserratPodgornik, the mother of the family. Mondavios castle is preserved very well, and it alsocontains a wax museum, where late medieval scenesare reproduced in a perfect setting. We are again inthe area ofMachiavellis The prince, not far fromMontefeltro, the region ofUrbino, where Raphael wasborn. Mondavio is a perfect location, as it is equally distantto the sea and to the mountains, just across Anconasprovince. In 1462 this place saw its greatest battle, between the Malatesta family, ruling over the coastlinebetween todays Marche and Emilia-Romagna, and theVatican-backed Montefeltro family from Urbino, whichcontrolled an area across Marche and Umbria. The Vaticanwon, and Mondavio was given to the Della Roverefamily, which had connected with the Montefeltro, whoseGuidobaldo was however attacked by Il Valentino,Machiavellis infamous prince. With the end of the DellaRovere dynasty, Mondavio became officially under thejurisdiction of theVatican, which kept it so until the unity

The cave on the northern slopes ofMonte Acuto musthave been difficult to see in the 13th century and evenharder to get to. Carved out of the mountain's precipitouscliffs, it sits above the the rugged valley of the Laqueriver just a few kilometres from Cingoli. Today one canclamber down the steep slope on sets of wooden and

travertine steps to the place of stone and solitude whereSanta Sperandia spent so many years of Benedictinepenitence. Just getting down there in the 1200s musthave been an ordeal, never mind how one might survivein such an environment. More than a mere visionary, shewas also renowned for her ability to perform miracles, and is best known for her act of producing fresh cherriesto some hungry labourers one cold and snowy January. She died in 1276, and her incorrupt body now lies in statein the Sanctuary dedicated to her in Cingoli, where sheis the town's patron saint. On the edge of the mountainridge are the ruins of the 13th centuryLa Roccaccia.Only a few crumbling walls remain, but the surroundingarea is littered with the stones of the one-time importantmedieval fortress...

A look at the last traditional barber in Urbino, Italy.

The art of the true barbershop shave and a haircut isa feat worth witnessing, watching old Italian barbershover lovingly over their charges, snipping sideburns andstraight-razoring neck lines while pumping the boosterseats on their nickel-plated Koch barber chairs. To saynothing of a good hot towel treatment. But thats the old

    world, right?www.ugfm.it - March 17, 11:01 AM

Many parts of Italy still celebrate ancient traditions, maintaining the unique character and history of theirregion, city and community. One of these traditions isthe incredible annual festival inAscoli Piceno: theQuintana

The event takes place on the first Sunday in August andconsists of a parade followed by a jousting competitionbetween the citys six neighbourhoods. It is a celebrationof Saint Emidio, protector of the city. The parade is aspectacular affair, as each of the neighbourhoods paradesthrough the centre of the town. Each one is attempting toput on the most splendid display, presenting their warriorfor the jousting tournament later in the day. Young ladstwirl batons and flags, showing off their individual andcollective skill.

Throughout the city the crowd bears the colours of theirrespective neighbourhoods building the intensity duringthe afternoon, before the parade sets off from one of thecitys squares to the main stadium. The intense heat duringthe day means the parade starts at about 6pm, but it is stillvery warm and a long way for the participants to walk intheir heavy medieval clothing...

Millenary comfort by Lucina:wearing Ancient Romans shoestoday

    April 2nd, 2012

What did the ancient Romans wear on their feet?Thats what Anna asked herself. Drawing on stimuli from theimpressive Roman ruins of Urbs Salvia, she tried to find ananswer taking into consideration the fact that the Romanscovered far more ground on foot compared with most peoplethese days. In order to walk such enormous distances, theyhad to have had very comfortable and hard-wearing shoes.

The Lucina Calzature project was developed in order to offera product which could best satisfy our millennia long desirefor well-being and comfort. The realisation of the Lucinaline of footwear has applied as philological an approach as

possible in two main aspects: the basic material to be used, and the production technique to be followed. These questions were analysed on the basis of bibliographicknowledge of a historic and archaeological nature, and ofnoted information of literary and iconographic sources. The method of work followed, which may be defined asexperimental archaeology, has allowed the production ofgoods which, although by form may be compared with thefootwear of Roman times, they still respect modern dayneeds.

Another post from the past: LeGrotte di Santa Sperandia andLa Roccaccia

    April 2nd, 2012

The cave on the northern slopes of Monte Acuto must have been difficult to see in the 13th century and even harder

to get to. Carved out of the mountain's precipitous cliffs, itsits above the the rugged valley of the Laque river just afew kilometres from Cingoli. Today one can clamber downthe steep slope on sets of wooden and travertine steps tothe place of stone and solitude where Santa Sperandia spentso many years of Benedictine penitence. Just getting downthere in the 1200s must have been an ordeal, never mindhow one might survive in such an environment. More thana mere visionary, she was also renowned for her ability toperform miracles, and is best known for her act of producingfresh cherries to some hungry labourers one cold and snowyJanuary. She died in 1276, and her incorrupt body now liesin state in the Sanctuary dedicated to her in Cingoli, whereshe is the town's patron saint. On the edge of the mountainridge are the ruins of the 13th century La Roccaccia. Onlya few crumbling walls remain, but the surrounding area islittered with the stones of the one-time important medievalfortress...

San Severino Marche, where the13th century is still alive

    April 2nd, 2012

I have rarely seen a more charming medieval place than SanSeverino Marche...

Now, the lower part of town is very nice, with the egg-shaped main square and the impressive buildings.. thisplace must have been quite powerful in the past. I readSan Severino was always fighting with Camerino, the firstbeing ghibellino and the latter a stronghold of the Vatican. However, I have to say, despite the great view in Camerino,San Severino is by far more beautiful. Instead of being adark, religious mountain town like Camerino, San Severinois more bright, square. If Camerino reminded me of the1500s or the Inquisition (maybe because there is a quiteimportant provincial prison there.. in a former church), SanSeverino is more like the 1200s, the beginning of the endof Medieval time, the time of the first Universities, but also

of crusades (amazing fresco on the theme in San Severino)...make sure to walk up to the tower and visit the amazinglybeautiful Castello al Monte. Its basically a whole villagehidden from the view, intact walls all around and a smallvibrant community living in it. Quite impressive really. Onceyou made it on the top, where the monastery and the tower

A post from the past: thehidden haven of St Eustachio

    April 2nd, 2012

In the Valle dei Grilli to the west of the beautiful medievaltown of San Severino (in Le Marche's Macerata province)there is is a huge cavern that opens into the side of the sheer

rock face dates back milennia, and you can see the scoremarks on the rocks from the chiselling work of the stonecutters. There are several other smaller caverns in the area thatlikely served as quarries, but the largest of them is the onlyone that boasts a Romanesque church at its entrance. It'scalled the Gallo quarry, after a rooster that was thrown intoa hole to try and find two lost monks - it (the rooster)eventually came out at a spring near Camerino, some 20kmaway. The monks? There's no account of what happened tothem. Although not quite as old as the quarry, the churchat the quarry's entrance dates back almost 1,000 years, andcovered a far larger area than its crumbling remains nowhold on to. At one time an important Benedictine abbey, St.Eustachio in Domora started out life in Lombard times asSt. Michael, and over the centuries served as a guest houseon this important connection road between San Severino (inthe Potenza valley) and Camerino (in the Chienti valley).

Inside the main structure with its large round eye for the rosewindow is a shrine of sorts in Gothic style, and underneathone can still see the cells which most likely served as living

quarters. The prodigious crucifix from the abbey is now inthe San Lorenzo Abbey in San Severino.... click on the photo
