19The Vendee Globe race is the longest race in the

world, and the only single-handed, non-stop sailing

race around the world. It starts and finishes at Les

Sables d’Olonne. Considered one of the hardest races

to complete, with almost 50% of competitors unable

to finish, only 50 sailors have completed the race in

the 22 years since its inception.

With 70% of all entries and every winner-to-date

coming from France, single-handed sailing has

become part of the French lifestyle. The Vendee

Globe is embedded in the French culture. In fact,

during the year of the regatta, elementary school

students follow the racers progress as part of their

geography class curriculum. The event posts a

website exclusively directed to kids (www.vendee-

globe-junior.vendee.fr) so that kids can follow the

racers and watch videos.

The Vendee Globe is an example of strength and

determination. Despite the fact that more people have

been in space than have completed this race, being

at the sea by yourself for almost 90 days, can be just

as challenging — not just physically but mentally as

Quite simply, it’s in the French DNA.

Page 20: Le Musse Du Vendee Globe

20 well. This museum will be a tribute to those brave men

and women that have survived the challenge and

particularly for those that have died trying.

The museum would offer a great interactive experience

for those passionate about sailing and for anybody

that likes extreme sports and adventures. Other than

inspiring more people to get involved in the sport, the

museum will help to show how we can beat-the-odds

and achieve our goals if we adequately prepare and

accept the challenge.

With more then 300,000 people visiting the race village

annually, and almost half-a-million in attendance

along the shoreline of Les Sables d’Olonne at the start

of the last race, the museum will be appropriately

located at the Centre de Congrés des Atlantes in Les

Sables d’Olonne facing the starting line on the water.

Environmental signage and billboards around the

city will be key to inform the visiting public about the

existence of the museum. Advertisements in major

sailing magazines and on related websites will also

be key to publicize the museum within the world

sailing community.

25An official supplier of legends since 1989, this race

has captivated the maritime world and the public

in general, to the point where even the strongest

superlatives seem unable to define it. The sea also

has its mythical summit, created twenty years ago

by a sailor, two times winner around the world.

Philippe Jeantot bathing in the glory of his two

victories in the BOC Challenge, the single-handed

race around the world with stopovers, wished to

go further with the idea of an adventure… “Time,”

How it all begins he wrote, “is a necessary factor to attain perfect

harmony with one’s sailboat. We had to forget

about stopping. A round-the-world race, without

stopovers or assistance, such were the conditions

to reach the desired communion. For the first

edition, we set off towards the unknown. None of

the 13 sailors who crossed the starting line in 1989

had the experience of a solo journey exceeding

100 days.”.

29A Simple IdeaOne lap around the

world non-stop

The course for the Vendee Globe illustrates the

straightforward nature and simplicity of the idea

behind this major event. You sail around the world

from west to east via the three major capes of Good

Hope, Leeuwin and the Horn. There is a long slide

down the Atlantic, the perilous voyage across the

Southern Ocean with firstly the Indian Ocean and

its crossed seas, then the Pacific Ocean, the world’s

biggest ocean. Finally, there is the climb back up the

Atlantic to head back to Les Sables d’Olonne, which

marks the start and finish of the Everest of the seas.

BRANDING

Page 32: Le Musse Du Vendee Globe

32 The inspiration for the logo came from the point of

view of the competitors of the race — being on open

ocean for almost 100 days, the only view they have

for 99% of the time is the horizon. Is the longest

race on the planet, which also supports the idea of

a long horizontal.

34 SKY BLUE OCEAN BLUETwo tones of blue were selected: the light vibrant is

inspired by the sky, the deep purplish is the tone of

open ocean waters. Black represents carbon fiber, the

most used material in the boats. Red and green are

the universal navigation light colors — red indicates

starboard side (left) and Green port side (right).

37The use of the Ocean Blue as the primary color

emphasizes the direct relation of the institution

with the ocean. The logo going from edge-to-edge

reinforces the representation of the horizon and long

duration of the race itself.

“It’s so Simple! Tell anybody that a man who’s alone on a boat is going around the world. They got it. On top of that, there are albatross, icebergs and things that they read on Jules Verne in between, then you have the magic.”

41The use of full-bleed photos and landscape

formats gives the openness of being in the middle

of the ocean. For the posters, the idea was to

emphasize the two biggest challenges of the race.

The mental and physical side of racing — being

alone as you travel around the world for almost

100 days without assistance or human contact.

50 The website will incorporate the same concepts

emphasized in the print materials and the museum

exhibits — trying to depict the race from the

point of view of the competitors. The full image

background is adopted from the print promotional

materials. The visitor will have access to video

footage from all editions of the race, virtual

exhibits, full profiles of all competitors and an

online store. During the race years, the virtual

visitors will be able to track the positioning of

competitors as they move around the globe.

57The curved front face of the building is inspired by the

shape of the sails on the boats, with external and exhibit

walls made of glass, creating a very open and bright

space simulating the perspective of the sailors on the

open ocean.

The movable curved walls on the floor plan were

inspired by the waves and tide currents that the

sailors encounter during their journey. The walls can

be rearranged every time a new exhibit is introduced.

The biggest focal point of the museum is the full scale

boat model located in the center of the exhibits area,

reinforcing the fact that the boat becomes the center

of a competitor’s universe during the race.
