Le Roy Jr.-Sr. High School Mr. McArdle’s Weekly Update - 4/5/19 Powerful Assembly! Each spring we work hard to bring an assembly of learning and reflection for our Knights. For the last couple of years the ideas and roots of the spirit for what type of experience we are looking to create at this spring assembly is suggested by our Emerging Knights Student Leadership Team. Yesterday we hosted Roger Von Braun for our spring assembly who spoke to our 7th-12th grade students and staff. He is a NYS Certified teacher turned suicide prevention advocate who shared his powerful story about his brother's suicide and the life-saving lessons he has learned from his life and death. Mr. Von Braun told an inspiring story and taught students practical strategies and coping mechanisms they can put to use in their daily lives. His story also brought up many other important aspects our Knights face—mental health issues, drug addiction, and vaping. As mental health issues continue to rise for teenagers we feel his message really hit home in many cases with our Knights. They were on the edge of their seats for the one hour presentation. Mr. Von Braun also stayed for the remainder of the day meeting with students one on one and hosting small lunch group sessions with our students. He also met with our Student Success Center staff throughout the day as well. We invite our families this weekend to talk about the story and what was presented on Thursday. Communication continues to be the #1 defense for so many things. A big thank you to Mr. Von Braun for his time and effort with our students; from his preconference with our Student Success Center to the last talk he had with a student after the lunch groups, he is on a mission and we are fortunate to have had him in Oatkan Knight Country. Spread The Word! It is never too early to start thinking about making this summer a Resume Buildingone! Our Student Success Center has compiled and will continue to update a College/Career summer program list for our Sr. High students. These are programs that colleges offer for great learning and focus on careers. Also on the list will be any learning opportunities in the region that would be tied to careers. This is definitely a list that everyone should keep their eye on this spring. There are deadlines as well to some of the applications. Powerful Assembly! Each spring we work hard to bring an assembly of learning and

reflection for our Knights. For the last couple of years the ideas and

roots of the spirit for what type of experience we are looking to create

at this spring assembly is suggested by our Emerging Knights Student

Leadership Team. Yesterday we hosted Roger Von Braun for our

spring assembly who spoke to our 7th-12th grade students and staff. He

is a NYS Certified teacher turned suicide prevention advocate who

shared his powerful story about his brother's suicide and the life-saving

lessons he has learned from his life and death. Mr. Von Braun told an

inspiring story and taught students practical strategies and coping

mechanisms they can put to use in their daily lives. His story also

brought up many other important aspects our Knights

face—mental health issues, drug addiction, and

vaping. As mental health issues continue to rise for

teenagers we feel his message really hit home in

many cases with our Knights. They were on the edge

of their seats for the one hour presentation. Mr. Von

Braun also stayed for the remainder of the day

meeting with students one on one and hosting small

lunch group sessions with our students. He also met

with our Student Success Center staff throughout the

day as well. We invite our families this weekend to

talk about the story and what was presented on

Thursday. Communication continues to be the #1 defense for so many things. A big thank you to Mr. Von

Braun for his time and effort with our students; from his preconference with our Student Success Center to the

last talk he had with a student after the lunch groups, he is on a mission and we are fortunate to have had him in

Oatkan Knight Country.

Spread The Word! It is never too early to start thinking about making this

summer a “Resume Building” one! Our Student Success

Center has compiled and will continue to update a

College/Career summer program list for our Sr. High

students. These are programs that colleges offer for great

learning and focus on careers. Also on the list will be any

learning opportunities in the region that would be tied to

careers. This is definitely a list that everyone should keep

their eye on this spring. There are deadlines as well to some

of the applications. Check the bottom of the Student Success

Music Knights! Last weekend over 30 Knights

performed in the Area All-County

Festival I @ Batavia HS! We were proud

to be represented by this amazing group!

Huge thanks to our teachers who

continue to prep and produce so much

talent out of our community! This week

we are sending 33 Knights to Festival II

at Attica High School! Enjoy the

experience!

Learning on the Road! Our Knights continue to have awesome out of school learning opportunities brought to them by our

teachers! Recently Madame Qadiri went on the road with her French 4 students and traveled to the

Memorial Art Gallery for a guided tour in French and then to an authentic French lunch at Roux on Park

Ave! This week Mrs. Sack took her Pre AP English students to Letchworth State Park for a guided

historical tour and hike. We continue to support and value off campus learning opportunities! Big thanks to

so many of our teachers who offer these opportunities throughout the school year!
