Since2006StAlbansandHertsmereandWelwynHatfieldDomesticAbuseForumhavecollaboratedtobringinformativedomesticabuserelatedtopicstoprofessionalsandthevoluntarysectorviaanannualhalf-dayconference.Webelievethatbyattractingexpertswithinthedomesticabusearena,coveringtopicsthataretimelyandrelevant,tospeak–wecankeeppractitionersinthispartofHertfordshireinformedofcurrentthinkingandworkingpractices.Weareverypleasedtobeabletooffertheseconferencestnochargetotheattendee–thisensuresthateveryonewhowishestoattendcan–theyare,therefore,notprecludedfromattendingonfinancialgrounds.Wehavemanagedtobuildupatrackrecordovertheyearsofputtingonaneventthatisverypopularandwellreceived,asevidencedbytheevaluationsheetscompletedbytheattendees.

2. Howdidyourpartnershipcomeaboutanddevelop?

WelwynHatfieldandHertsmereBoroughCouncilshavehadacloseworkingrelationshipoveranumberofyears,withregardtocommunitysafety(forpolicingpurposesweshareaCommunitySafetySergeant)asdid,andindeedstilldo,theChairsoftherespectiveforaforeacharea.Itwasthroughthismutualtrustandunderstandinganddesiretoprovidetimely,uptodateinformationtoawideraudiencethatthejointeventwasborn,11yearsago.OurworkingrelationshiphasdevelopedovertheyearsandwenowhaveadedicatedworkingpartycomprisingmembersofStAlbans&HertsmereandWelwynHatfieldDomesticAbuseforcoveringarangeoforganisationsi.e.HertsConstabulary,HCC,localauthoritiesandsolicitor’spractice.Thisgroupmeetonaregularbasis,hostedbyCraneandStaplestoplanandprogresstheevents.Dependentonthesubjectoftheconferencewecandraftinotheragencies.

3. Impact.Pleasedescribewhatoutcomesyouareachieving,yourimpactorhowyouaremakingadifference.

Since2006,we(StAlbansandHertsmereandWelwynHatfieldDomesticAbuseForum)haveplanned,budgetedandpresentedadomesticabuserelatedhalfdayeventonanannualbasis.Asnapshotofthetopicscoveredinclude:hiddenvictims(children,teenagers,blackminorityethniccommunities),thelegalaspectsofabuse,movingforwardandimprovingrelationships.Wehaveachievedatrackrecordofofferinguptodateinformative,localisedinformationtoattendees.Wearepleasedtobeabletoofferplacesatnochargetoattendees.Theaudienceismadeupofprofessionals,thevoluntarysectorandthosepeoplewhoworkwithinthedomesticabusearena.Suchistheinterestintheevents,wenowmustallocateplacesaccordingly.Overthelastfewyearswehavebeenoversubscribed.Outcomesinclude–10informationpackedhalfdayevents,over100professionalsinattendanceateachevent,theopportunityforlocalorganisationstopromotetheirservices,platformforprofessionalstoinformaudienceabouttheirwork,theopportunityforattendeestoquestionspeakersandseekfurtherclarification,thoseworkinginthisfieldinWelwynHatfield,StAlbansandHertsmerearemoreinformed.

4. Howpartnershipworkingishelpingyoutoachievemore.

Byworkingtogether,wehavebeenabletoutilisethestrengthswithineachofthepartnersinvolved.Thishasenabledustostreamlinetheprocessofputtingonanannualevent.Wehaveasmallworkingpartycomprisingkeyindividualswhoallhaveavaluablecontributiontomaketowardstheprocess,fromdifferingbackgrounds.Wehavebeenabletoachievemorebyworkingtogetherasapartnership.Weareabletosharetheloadoforganisingtheevent–eachofustakingonboardrespectivetaskswhichmeansnosinglepersonhasresponsibilityfortheentireevent.Thisyearoureventisbeingheldon03MarchandthevenuehasbeenarrangedbyWelwynHatfieldBoroughCouncil(freeofcharge)theprintingoftheprogrammeswillbedonebyHertsmereBoroughCouncil(freeofcharge),3differentpeoplegiventhespeakerstocontactsandthepressreleasewillbejointlywrittenaftertheevent.Anotheradvantageofworkingtogetheracrossthreedistrictsmeansthatweareabletoattractattendeesfromawiderarea;wearethereforemakingagreaterimpactbyworkinginthisway.

5. Howyouaremakingsurethatthepartnershipisworkingeffectively.

Asdescribedabove,wearemadeupofindividualsfromanumberofdifferentorganisationswiththecommongoalofincreasingawarenessofdomesticabusepracticeswithinStAlbans,HertsmereandWelwynHatfield.Ourpurposeistoensurethesmoothorganisationandrunningofourjointannualevent.Weareclearaboutdividingupresponsibilities,wecommunicateregularly,sharerelevantinformationandarecommittedtosharingknowledgewithothers.Theseeventsarehighlyregardedbyallsectorsandthishighlightstheeffectivenessofourpartnershipworking.Thispartnershiphasbeengoingforanumberofyearsandtrust,understandingandteamworkhavebeenbuiltwitheachnewevent.

6. Whatyouarelearningfromeachother.

Weareconstantlylearningfromeachother,particularlywithregardtohoweachoftheagenciesisinvolvedinthedomesticabusearenaandtheimpacteachorganisationismaking.Wewanttopromotetheservicesthatareavailabletoresidentswithintheboroughs,e.g.followingadiscussionwithoneoftheworkingpartywewereabletoputalocalwomen’srefugeintouchwiththefoodback.Similarly,weheldaChristmasCollectionwithintheCounciloffices,forourlocalrefuge-weaskedforunusedholidaytravelitemse.g.shampoo,conditionerandthisprovedagreatsuccess.WewerethenabletousethistopromoteHertfordshire’sDomesticAbuseHelplinewithinthepressrelease.
