How Well Do You Hear God’s Word?
Elders of every church have the responsibility of sowing the seed of
the kingdom. In the Parable of the Sower, Jesus spoke of the soil that
the seed needed to grow.
Jesus gave more than three dozen parables but this is the only one that
is named (Matt. 13:18, “parable of the sower”). Jesus also said that if
one does not understand this parable, he will not understand any
parable (Mark 4:13). So this parable is the key to understanding all of
Jesus’ parables.
When the seed was sown, it fell on different soils. Jesus wants us to
consider how we listen to God’s word:
The Wayside
This soil was hard soil. It had been compacted by feet & wagon
wheels. This is the man who hears but does not understand. His
heart has been hardened by the habits of life. Then Satan comes to
take away the word that was sown into his heart.
The Rocky Soil
This is ground where the soil is thin and underneath is bedrock.
Consequently, the soil is unable to retain much moisture. Any seed
that germinates will wither when dry weather comes. This is the
person who commits to Christianity but falls away when times get
tough.
The Thorny Soil
This is soil which has seeds of thorns mixed with the good seed.
When all seeds germinate, the thorns choke out the good seed. This is
the person who begins his Christian walk well. But worries about life
and money choke out his spirituality.
The Good Soil
This is ground that has been plowed and prepared. Then the seed
grows to bring about the mature plant and fruit. This is the person
who hears God’s word (Luke 8:11, “the seed”), understands it, lives
it, & permits God’s word to rule his life. He bears fruit for the
Kingdom of God (the church).
What kind of soil are we?
How well do we listen to God?
Are we obedient?
Are we bearing fruit for God?
On judgment day, everyone will
give an account for all of his actions. ~ Buddy Driver

brought food to the funeral home, you
called, you visited & the Ladies Class
made a contribution to the Disaster
Relief. You have shown me so much
love. Mama loved to come with me to
church because you are so warm.
Thank You, Joann Rist
