About the Series

During these troubled and unsettled times, sense the true comfort and joy that Christ brings this Advent season with the Comfort And Joy weekly Advent series for traditional worship. Each week in this series written by well-known pastor Rev. Tim Klinkenberg, parishioners will find out about the different types of comfort Christ comes to bring (revealed in Isaiah 40) and experience the resulting joy that can be lived out in Advent. Hymns in the series include “Comfort, Comfort Ye My People,” “On Jordan’s Bank the Baptist’s Cry, ” “Oh, Come, Oh, Come, Emmanuel,” and “Lift Up Your Heads, Ye Mighty Gates.”

• Week 1: The Peace of Christ (Isaiah 40:1-2): True peace comes only through Jesus Christ and the forgiveness that he brings. He ends warfare without and within. He is the Prince of Peace.

• Week 2: The Pardon of Christ (Isaiah 40:3-5): We prepare the way of the Lord through repentance, as the forgiveness we receive through Christ makes the rough places of our lives smooth.

• Week 3: The Presence of Christ (Isaiah 40:6-9): We remember that Christ is present with us now and that he will come again in glory on the Last Day.

• Week 4: The Power of Christ (Isaiah 40:10-11): God himself came to live among us and be our Savior, but his power was displayed in the weakness and humility of the manger and the cross.

Service Two

Complete Script For Worship Leaders

• The Opening Hymn is sung by the congregation to the tune Puer Nobis LM:

On Jordan’s bank the Baptist’s cry Announces that the Lord is nigh; Awake and hearken, for he brings Glad tidings of the King of kings.

Then cleansed be ev’ry life from sin; Make straight the way for God within,

And let us each our hearts prepare For Christ to come and enter there.

We hail thee as our Savior, Lord, Our refuge, and our great reward. Without thy grace we waste away Like flow’rs that wither and decay.

• The Litany is spoken responsively by the pastor and the congregation:

P We come from the wilderness of the world today.

C Lead us in this time to safe places of your grace.

P We come from lives that are twisted and tired.

C Make our crooked roads straight and refresh us by your peace.

P We come from valleys and the shadows they create in our lives.

C Rescue us from the darkness and lead us to your pardon.

P We have walked over the hills of the week and need your strength.

C Mow down the hills we will face in the future and grant us your power.

P We have lived through the uneven parts of life and need your forgiveness.

C Put our lives on the solid ground of your love and lead us on.

• The Lighting of the Advent Candles is spoken by the pastor as the first and second candles of the Advent wreath are lit by an acolyte:

P We have experienced and live in the darkness of sin, but we have seen a great light. As we light our second candle we are reminded of the great light of Christ and the pardon of our sins that he graciously offers. As the light of these two burning flames illumine our sanctuary, let the light of Christ and his pardon illumine our hearts. Amen.

• The Confession and Absolution is read responsively by the pastor and the congregation:

C Lord Jesus, we have walked down crooked paths of deception; we have run through perilous valleys of despair; we have exhausted ourselves climbing hills of consumption; we have been led into ways which caused us to stumble in our faith and life; we have made our lives rougher than you intended. Hear the confession of our hearts, lead us to true repentance and fill us with your words of pardon and release. Amen.

(Silence for reflection and self-examination)

P Our Lord hears our prayers, and intervenes in our lives. The light of his law shows us our sins and the light of his Gospel shows us our Savior Jesus Christ. The pardon of God is yours in Jesus Christ. He has released you from the guilt of your sin. He has covered your shame. As a called and ordained servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son + and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

• A Hymn of Praise is sung by the congregation to the tune Merton 87 87:

Hark! A thrilling voice is sounding! “Christ is near,” we hear it say. “Cast away the works of darkness, all you children of the day!”

So, when next he comes in glory and the world is wrapped in fear, He will shield us with his mercy and with words of love draw near.

Honor, glory, might, dominion to the Father and the Son With the everliving Spirit while eternal ages run!

• The Prayer of the Day is read by the pastor:

P Heavenly Father, through the sending of the gift of your Son Jesus into the world, you have shown us the nature of love. There is no confusion, no doubt and no question about your love for us. Grant us clarity of mind and spirit, remove all obstacles from our lives that would create confusion and lead us this season to celebrate the Light of the world, even Jesus Christ our Lord, that we may celebrate his birth with joy. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

• The Children’s Sermon is delivered by the pastor or other worship leader:

Items needed: pictures (or actual items) of children’s board games, such as Candyland, checkers, or any other popular game familiar to children

P Games … they can be fun, exciting and sometimes frustrating. We want to win. We want to be the champion, and we usually want everything to be in our favor. However, that doesn’t always happen. Have you ever played a game that was too difficult? Or perhaps you played with someone who was really good, and you never had the chance to get ahead or win? Maybe you even play with a younger brother or sister who gets upset if they don’t win.

Some of you might have a special Family Game Night at your house. It’s a popular event for some families to enjoy. A favorite game, maybe some pizza and dessert, and just being together as a family can be comforting and fun. Some families might even watch a special movie, too.

I brought with me some of the games that I know are popular. You may even have some of these games at home, or maybe you like playing some of these games (hold up and spend a minute or two sharing/discussing the games brought).

Whenever these games are played, rules must be followed. Each game has specific rules that must be followed in order for the game to work or be successful. If the

rules are not followed, the game might be unfair or even not fun to play. Because of sin, we might be tempted to try and break the rules of the game at times. Maybe you have tried to move a few extra spaces in a game or tried to take some extra cards that would be in your favor. These temptations are called cheating. Cheating is one way that people try to break the rules to improve their chances to win. While you may feel excited about winning a game, cheating hurts the other players.

We often do the same thing in our lives. We think so much about ourselves and what we want, that we forget about others and how they feel. Being first in the lunch line or trying to get the best basketball at recess can hurt our friends’ feelings. If we always break the rules or try to play in a way that benefits us, our friends might not want to play with us.

Thankfully, Jesus always plays with us, no matter what rules we break. Jesus knows that we are not perfect, nor will we ever be perfect. Because of our sinfulness, Jesus was born on Christmas, and later died and rose again to fully pay the price of our sins. He pardons us. He forgives us. He wipes away the list of rules we break. Even though Jesus knows we break the rules and play the wrong way, he will always join in the game with us. Jesus wants us to follow the rules—his rules. We receive the gift of the Holy Spirit to help us keep the faith and do what is right. It’s hard to play the right way all the time, but it’s the right thing to do.

We are winners! Even when you are feeling sad, lonely, and think you can’t ever do anything right, know that you are a winner because of the pardon Jesus has given you. You have been forgiven, so go and forgiven others, too!

Let’s share a prayer together. Repeat the words after me.

P Dear Heavenly Father,

C Dear Heavenly Father,

• The Old Testament Reading, Isaiah 40:3-5, is spoken by the pastor or other worship leader:

P A voice cries: “In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain. And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”

• The Epistle Reading, Ephesians 4:31-32, is spoken by the pastor or other worship leader:

P Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

• The Gospel Reading, Mark 1:1-8, is spoken by the pastor or other worship leader:

P The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. As it is written in Isaiah the prophet, “Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way, the voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight,’” John appeared, baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And all the country of Judea and all Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed with camel’s hair and wore a leather belt around his waist and ate locusts and wild honey. And he preached, saying, “After me comes he who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

• The Theme Hymn is sung by the congregation to the tune God Rest Ye Merry 76 76 76 and refrain:

“Speak words of comfort,” says our God, “Tell of the peace I bring.

Your warfare ends as you receive Forgiveness from your King!”

For Christ our Lord to us has come And of that news we sing:

O tidings of comfort and joy, Comfort and joy,

O tidings of comfort and joy.

Prepare a highway for our God, Bring lofty places low.

Let selfish pride be put away And true repentance show.

For Christ our Savior came to earth To pay the debt we owe:

O tidings of comfort and joy, Comfort and joy,

O tidings of comfort and joy!

All praise to God the Father sing, With praise to God the Son,

And praise to God the Spirit bring, Most blessed Three in One!

As ’twas, is now, and e’er shall be While endless ages run!

O tidings of comfort and joy, Comfort and joy,

O tidings of comfort and joy!

• The Chancel Drama is spoken by the pastor and a second reader, who is speaking as Isaiah (1):

P We gather in God’s gifts of comfort and joy. Last week, we heard how these promising gifts come to us through the peace of Christ. There is no more conflict with God. That has been overcome. Today, we hear through the prophet Isaiah another word of God which adds comfort and joy to our lives:

1 In the wilderness, prepare the way of the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God.

P A royal highway! A highway paved by God’s immeasurable grace and pardon! That is what God will bring to us, a pathway to return home and to wholeness. And so Isaiah proclaims what God will do to make this happen:

1 Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain. And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.

P In the midst of our wilderness, there is God’s construction project to make all things level and smooth. Yet Isaiah prefaces this with the word of forgiveness:

1 She has served her term, her penalty is paid.

P And we know through whom that penalty is paid, and why the wilderness is also a place where salvation begins to dawn. John the Baptist was preaching in the wilderness when the Word of God, Jesus, came to him and for him and for us all. This was the beginning of the divine leveling and the emergence of God’s plan to do something truly promising.

1 I, I am he, says the Lord, who blots out your transgressions for my own sake and I will not remember your sins.

P However, we also know that God’s leveling can have another, critical meaning for us. It can mean our leveling—the flattening of our lives, our joys, our experiences of meaning—even as the people of Israel experienced that leveling in exile. But that is not God’s final word for us. God’s desire is to redeem us. And so God sent his Son, Jesus the Christ, to bear the burden of our affliction.

1 It was the will of the Lord to crush him with pain. When you make his life an offering for sin, he shall see his offspring, and shall prolong his days; through him the will of the Lord shall prosper.

P Through Christ, his coming, and his cross, we are made whole in God’s forgiveness.

1 Surely he has borne our infirmities and carried our diseases; yet we accounted him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the punishment that made us whole, and by his bruises we are healed ... The Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

P All of this is a free gift to us. We could not earn it or merit it by what we do. Christ has borne our divine leveling, and instead lifted us up to be the people of God! Instead of judgment, through Christ we get to hear a comforting word of God’s love.

1 I formed you, you are my servant; O Israel, you will not be forgotten by me. I have swept away your transgressions like a cloud, and your sins like mist; return to me, for I have redeemed you.

P There can be no meaningful movement without forgiveness. But when we are forgiven, then there is the strength to move forward—to travel down this royal highway that God has prepared! Our return is a return home, a return from a life of despair to a life of hope, and we travel down the royal highway of our God with singing and with joy.

1 So the ransomed of the Lord shall return, and come to Zion with singing; everlasting joy shall be upon their hands; they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

P In this season of Advent, we trust and hope, and we hear God’s final word of pardon for us. God graciously pardons our lives in Christ, and so we go down the royal highway of our God with comfort and joy.

1 Let them return to the Lord, that he may have mercy on them, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

• The Sermon is delivered by the pastor:

P Grace and peace to you from God our Father and from our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

The Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park is like nothing else in the world. It’s 50 miles of hairpin twists and turns, huge drop-offs on one side of the road and amazing views of the Rockies on the other side. Traveling on this road requires that the driver completely pays attention and sometimes creeps along to make way for a bighorn sheep and other critters! It’s a phenomenal drive.

Isaiah writes, “Make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill shall be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain.” This heavy road work would be the work of the Messiah of which Isaiah writes. The Messiah would come and take the twisted mess of roads and valleys and straighten them out.

This season we get to go back and press forward. The end of the year provides opportunity to reflect on where we are now. We think about our present struggles. We remember the previous year and leave the rough places behind. We engage in a new path, a smoother path, a path that flows from the pardon of our Lord Jesus.

When we go back down the path of the previous year, we do see those congested highways. Those moments where anxiety clogged up our lives like so much Los Angeles traffic come to mind. We become anxious about the simple things of life, like food and clothing. We become anxious about the complicated things of life, like relationships and people. And somehow we struggle to navigate that anxiety on our own. It wears out our bodies. It wears out our souls and we need our Lord to come and deliver us and give us relief.

We look forward into the new year, wondering what the rough places will be. Our jobs seem to be somewhat disposable and the uncertainty in the world makes life rough. We rest our lives in our own ability to make our own way. We try to smooth out the rough spots and somehow engineer our own straight ways. Yet all humanity, you and me included, has no way to predict the future or to reckon the past.

The Messiah is on the way, Jesus our Lord. It’s his advent that we celebrate. Isaiah proclaims that “every valley will be lifted up and every mountain and hill made flat.” The one who can reckon the past and predict the future is our Lord. God chose his Son Jesus to do the work of pardoning us, forgiving the sins of the past and graciously laying out our future.

Jesus goes back down the highway of the past and provides his pardon for our sins. He leads us not to look inward, but to look to the cross. In the Christmas season we are led to the one place where the pardon of God was so clear and so public. We are led to the cross. Jesus cleared up the past, not with tar and asphalt, but with flesh and blood. He is the sacrifice by which all of our past is reckoned. He pardons us with his death and our past is released from us. We see it; he doesn’t. We go back to it; he has crucified it. We are pardoned in Jesus.

The future may look treacherous, but we have our Messiah with us. He promises not that things will be easy, but that he will be with us. He promises that his Spirit will lead us into the New Year. There are no road blocks that will dissuade him. Amazing is the power of his grace. He not only forgives the past, but he gives us hope for a new year filled with experiences that flow from his open hand. We cannot predict the circumstances of the future, but we can predict that our Savior’s love and grace will go with us.

A pardon is a second chance for someone. It’s interesting to think about. Having the guilt and the fear along the way is draining and tiring. Serving time incarcerated must be horrible. The cells are tiny. There are so many people. The day is ordered for you. There is no freedom. But then the phone call comes: the pardon is on the way. The governor has said, “I pardon you and you are free.” It is a fresh start for the pardoned. The hope for the future is grand.
