Background of I Choose Life(ICL) Civil Society Organisation

Registered as youth focussed NGO in 2004

Programs in over 150 institutions both secondary and tertiary institutions across 13 counties in Kenya reaching over 1 million youth reached with behavior change messages annually

54 full time staff, 82 HIV Counseling & Testing Counsellors , over 100 volunteers

Annual budget is over Ksh. 120million

Governance manual developed and implemented e.g all organizational manuals, policies and budget approved by Board

Performance based management instituted e.g the CEO developed his annual performance targets

Use of Balance Score Card for performance management

Board attendance increased Board reviewing financial reports CEO performance being evaluated by the

Board against set targets

• Clear performance targets has lead to deliberate and targeted community engagement, increasing reach

• Specific strategic communication materials have been developed for the community

• ICL has been planning with the community, not for the community (BRIEFLY SAY HOW)

INSTITUTIONAL STRENGTHENING IN COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

• The focus on service delivery at the end of the day is addressing the needs of the clients e.g. strengthened procurement system has led to more efficient delivery of commodities to the community

• Credibility with the donors has led to increased resources e.g obtained 2 million shillings from broadcasting success stories
