Bringing over 30 years of nursing experience in a variety of roles with the majority in OR and education, Karen now leads a system-wide Robust Process Improvement project concentrating on the care of surgical instruments including cleaning, decontamination, and sterilization with the goal of providing every surgeon and patient with optimal instrumentation for surgery.

Stacy Ann Kelley, RN

Beginning her career in the OR, she quickly rose from staff nurse to manager for several large surgical service lines at the Texas Medical Center campus. Stacy spent four years streamlining OR processes and worked on several initiatives to drive high quality, cost-effective patient care. She created a platform that brought together key stakeholders in both patient care and the value analysis team to ensure that cost saving measures were based in clinical evidence and end-user efficacy.

Richard Miller

Three common sources of Healthcare Associated Infections (HAIs) will be addressed: contaminated hands of the health care provider and patient, the contaminated environment, and the contaminated skin of the patient. Each of these factors can lead to the development of both Surgical Site Infections and also additional Healthcare Associated Infections. Additionally, the most critical evidence-based practice information for HAI prevention will be reviewed related to the surgical environment. Perioperative Medical Malpractice Mock Trial7.0 CHs | April 2

This interactive, all-day workshop encourages audience participation in a mock medical malpractice trial involving a hospital/ASC and a perioperative registered nurse. The morning session will consist of an overview of the medical/legal processes with an interactive discussion on documentation and apology and disclosure programs designed to reduce the frequency and severity of malpractice claims. The remainder of the session will be devoted to a presentation of a mock trial with a plaintiff suing a nurse and the facility in which she works.

The mock trial will capture the themes discussed in the morning session. The audience will be asked to participate as jurors, including deliberation of a verdict, to have a better understanding and personal sense of malpractice risks in the perioperative setting. There will be role-playing with individuals playing the part of the plaintiff and defendant, a judge, the plaintiff attorney, the defense attorney, and expert witnesses.

Team-Based Literature Appraisal Using the AORN Evidence Appraisal Tools7.0 CHs | April 2

Evidence-based practice (EBP) is now recognized for its important contribution to patient care. Appraising literature is a fundamental step in the EBP process and serves to incorporate the research findings into clinical decisions. This hands-on workshop will teach participants to utilize the AORN Evidence Appraisal Tools to view clinical issues from the perspective of “What does the evidence support” and “What decision should follow.”

Perioperative Management of Trauma Patients7.0 CHs | April 2

The individual who experiences multiple traumatic injuries presents challenges for perioperative teams. This all day session is to assist perioperative nurses in increasing knowledge in management of the multitraumatized patients. Topics to be covered are treatment of traumatic shock to include the prevention or interruption of the vicious cycle of hypothermia, coagulopathy and metabolic acidosis. Specific traumatic injuries will be described along with the appropriate care for each injury. Lessons learned from the military experience will be explored. A method to decrease operating time for trauma patient will be addressed. Because of the increasing number of older adults, information will be provided on the special considerations for the older adult who has experienced trauma.

The provision of safe surgical care to achieve optimal outcomes for all patients is driven by perioperative practice, perioperative standards of care, site specific policy and procedure and governmental legislation.
