Colas Rail Leadership Framework

What is the Leadership Framework and why have it?

If you have the desire and willpower, you can become an effective leader. Good leaders develop through a

never-ending process of self-study, education, training and experience. This guide will help you through that

process. To inspire your team into higher levels of performance, there are certain things you must be, know

and do. These do not come naturally, but are acquired through continual work and study. Good leaders are

continually working and studying to improve their leadership skills; they are NOT resting on their laurels.

When should I use it?

 Performance Review

 Leadership Training

 Day-to-Day Management

 Talent Management

 Succession Planning

 Recruitment

How do I use the Leadership Framework? PLAN

Read through the framework before you start

Allow half an hour of uninterrupted time

Collect any feedback you have, e.g. your last review, career discussion, or simply ask

for feedback from colleagues

DO

Work through each of the Behavioural Competencies and place a or a as objectively

as you can. means you believe you do this / is a strength and means that you believe

you don’t do this / is a development area

Choose 2 or 3 behaviours that you think will make the most difference to you (pick strengths

and weaknesses)

Discuss and get feedback on your choices from your manager

Once you have agreed which behavioural competencies to focus on add them

to the behavioural section of your personal development plan in the review

Discuss with your manager what objectives to set on your personal development plan

Take action on the areas you identify

REVIEW

Update your personal development plan as part of the performance management cycle

and during your 1-to-1s with your manager

Update your objectives as you develop
