Councillor Laurie Smith was elected to Logan City Council in 2012, after a career in the printing industry that included senior management roles in sales and marketing, business development and operational management. Prior to this, he spent nine years in the Australian Defence Force.

In the 2012-2016 term, Cr Smith was Assistant Chairperson of Council's Roads and Water Infrastructure Committee and he is excited to now be the Chairperson of the first City Image and Innovation Committee in Council's history.

Matthew Cox (Logan Together Director)

Co-Chair After chairing the working party that established the Logan Together initiative during 2014/2015, Matthew Cox was appointed its Director in July 2015. Prior to this role, Matthew spent a decade at the Australian Red Cross, heading the organisation’s human services and community and economic development program in Queensland.

Matthew was an adviser to the Every Child Deserves Every Chance campaign developing a collective impact initiative in Central Queensland. Matthew was also a member of the Inclusive Brisbane Board, advising Brisbane City Council on community issues from 2011-2015.

Matthew was a member of the inaugural City of Choice Leadership Team.

Deputy Chair Over the past 20 years, Gail's industry experience and expertise in the Australian multicultural, humanitarian and community sectors has seen her change countless lives for the better.

A nationally lauded and award winning visionary, Gail is the CEO of Access Community Services Ltd where she leads her nearly 300 staff in pursuit of their organisational vision; to create social, cultural and economic experiences and opportunities that transform the lives of individuals and communities globally.

Renowned for her expertise in innovative service solutions for newly arrived migrants and humanitarian entrants, Gail is a recognised thought leader in needs-based community planning, innovative business models, social cohesion, strategic partnerships, employment pathways, funding opportunities and strategic direction.

Gail was a member of the inaugural City of Choice Leadership Team.

The Hon. Shannon Fentiman MP (State Member for Waterford)

Queensland Government representative

Shannon was recently appointed as the Minister for Employment and Small Business, and the Minister for Training and Skills.

Her previous portfolio was as Minister for Communities, Women and Youth, Minister for Child Safety, Minister for the Prevention of Domestic and Family violence.

Prior to her election to the Queensland Parliament, Shannon worked as a solicitor and also worked as a Judge’s Associate in the Supreme Court of Queensland to her Honour Justice Atkinson.

With considerable experience in employment law, Shannon is committed to the creation and protection of quality jobs in Queensland, and is a passionate advocate for quality education and training opportunities for all members of the community.

Shannon was a member of the inaugural City of Choice Leadership Team.

Member Role Expertise Bert van Manen MP (Federal Member for Forde)

Australian Government representative

Bert represents the Australian Government on the Leadership Team, particularly regarding relevant initiatives, pilots and place-based approaches in Logan

Bert grew up in Logan and attended local schools.

Prior to entering politics he worked for a major bank for 15 years before he and wife Judi started their own business in the financial services sector.

Bert believes that strong families are the basic building blocks of our society. He is committed to fighting for and developing policies that will assist individuals, families, businesses and community organisations.

Bert was a member of the inaugural City of Choice Leadership Team.

Cath Bartolo (YFS CEO)

Member Cath has worked in the Logan community almost 30 years, with extensive experience and contact in Logan’s non-government organisation sector, particularly in family, housing and legal support, domestic and family violence, social enterprise, mental health.

Cath is the CEO of Logan not-for-profit YFS, a key partner in the Queensland Government's Integrated Services Response to Domestic and Family Violence.

Cath is also a member of the Logan Together Cross Sector Leadership Table.

Cath was a member of the inaugural City of Choice Leadership Team.

Member Role Expertise John Perry (Former Employment, Education and Training General Manager at BoysTown/ yourtown)

Member John established BoysTown's regional school-to-work transition and work preparation training programs, youth specialist employment services and BoysTown Enterprises.

He spent 20 years in the training and employment area of the federal government in a range of areas including regional operations management, business development, labour market management, industry training reform, community resource management and place-based approaches to employment creation.

John is a member of the several government and not-for-profit Boards in the employment, education and training sectors and a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

John was a member of the inaugural City of Choice Leadership Team.

Pro Vice Chancellor Linda O'Brien (Head of Logan Campus Griffith University)

Member Linda was appointed as Pro Vice Chancellor and Head of Logan Campus in September 2017, having previously been Pro Vice Chancellor (Information Services) since October 2008.

She is passionate about the value of information as the foundation for learning, research and innovation. She is engaged in a number of international and national initiatives aimed at leveraging innovative information technologies to make research outputs and data more findable, accessible, interoperable and useable.

Linda has published and presented, both nationally and internationally, and contributed to a number of state and national initiatives. Linda is currently a board member of Open Researcher and Contributor ID and of the Queensland Cyber Infrastructure Foundation, Chair of the Open Data Institute Australia Network, and a member of the Queensland Public Records Review Committee.

Member Role Expertise Kate Meyrick (CEO and MD, Hornery Institute)

Member Kate is a lawyer with a master’s degree in urban design and estate management.

She has more than 25 years’ experience in the property industry and has worked throughout Europe, Australia, Asia and USA as an urbanist and place-maker.

Since 2001, she has been the Chief Executive and Managing Director of The Hornery Institute, a non-profit organisation specialising in community development.

She has worked alongside government, industry and community partners to create a shared vision for some of Australia’s most ambitious major urban infrastructure and regeneration projects.

Kate has been influential in shaping thinking about global competitiveness of Australian cities.

Belinda Drew (CEO, Community Services Industry Alliance)

Member

Belinda was this year appointed as a board member of Social Enterprise Finance Australia (SEFA), which, provides tailored finance solutions to help clients build their capacity to manage debt and become financially sustainable. SEFA is currently focused on the issue of homelessness.

She has more than 20 years' experience in the community sector, in fields including homelessness, child protection and housing, as well social enterprise, social entrepreneurship, community finance and social investment.

Member Role Expertise Bruce Wolfe (Australian Institute of Architects - Queensland Chapter President)

Member Bruce is Company Chair and Director for Conrad Gargett.

He is also Adjunct Professor - University of Queensland.

He is chair of Vision South Bank and of the Queensland College of Art Industry Advisory Board. He has won awards in fields of design, construction and master planning.

Bruce has designed world leading facilities for universities as well as health and defence sectors.

Conor O'Brien (Executive Director and CEO of Multikraft Probiotics Australia)

Member Conor has been involved with several successful start-up businesses, including environmental companies in Australia, Asia and the Middle East, as well as some innovative niche markets including the Australian communications and health sectors.

In 2006, Conor was the Founding Director and CEO of Micro-biologic Pty Ltd, for wastewater, odour control, animal husbandry and large scale waste reuse and composting internationally.

In 2014, he became Executive Director and CEO of Multikraft Probiotics Australia, focusing on sustainable development working with probiotic treatments.

Conor is an entrepreneur with an executive MBA who is passionate about sustainability, and striving for a healthier, better world.

Member Role Expertise Aunty Robyn Williams (Elder Traditional Owner)

Member Aunty Robyn is Yugambeh Elders who lives in Logan City.

She is also a Yugambeh Traditional Owners, and a descendant of Bilin Bilin, known as King of the Logan.

Aunty Robyn speaks the Yugambeh language, and is also an educator who works on a number of homework programs in Logan primary schools.

Education and the attainment of knowledge is an over-arching theme for the Williams family.

Lynda Ford (Chief Executive Officer, Enterprising Partnerships Group)

Member Lynda is an internationally acknowledged specialist in community development, spanning non-government, government, industry and public research organisations.

She is nationally known for her work in social enterprise start-ups.

Having worked for almost 30 years with individuals, families and communities, industry associations, local government, universities, state government and as CEO for a national professional association, Lynda’s capabilities include grant management, contract management, outcome delivery, strategic planning, financial management, project management, human resource management, thought leadership and sector leadership within Australia’s community services sector, policy development and implementation, and direct service work with disadvantaged people, groups and communities.

Member Role Expertise Nikki Chenoweth (Indigenous artist, designer and founder of Bush Therapies, Jimboomba)

Member Nikki is a descendant from the Nyamal Nyamal, Kalkadoon and Guugu Yimidhirr Language groups.

With over 20 years' experience designing jewellery and millefiori-clay art, her works is now being recognised Australia wide, with Bush Therapies recently appointed an Official Sub-Licensee supplier to the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Nikki is also the Indigenous Mentor with The Salvation Army Employment Plus and the Cultural Competency Trainer for KPMG.
