I can still recall buying my first television set way back in the early 1970s. It was an Austrian brand and quite expensive considering the cost of living then, so the retailer threw in a free helicopter ride around Hong Kong island to sweeten the deal.

A dozen years down the road, it was still working perfectly, after the replacement of one or two components. And then I yielded to some colorful and enticing advertising and purchased a new set for an upgraded level of audio-visual entertainment, but still kept my ‘old faithful’ as a spare for years.

Fast forward to 2012 when I returned from Australia to set up home, and among the many electrical appliance purchases was a 55” HDTV of a famous Japanese brand that cost me more than $18,000, and for which I held great expectations. I even knocked back the offer of a few extra hundred dollars for extended guarantee as I expected the TV to last me at least another dozen years, like my first TV.

But how times have changed! My TV started to malfunction in 2016 – a mere four years from the date of purchase. The shop from which I bought it

did not seem the least bit surprised or remorseful, and quoted me a price in excess of $7,000 for a component replacement. I was wiser this time, and bought a new one online the next day for $5,000+ instead. I might add that nobody was interested in my faulty TV, and I had to pay for it to be removed!

What has happened in recent years with electronic products is their life spans are getting shorter, as manufacturers purposefully shorten product life to prop up sales, a phenomenon known as built-in obsolescence.

Policy makers are increasingly concerned with this inefficient use of resources and its impact on the environment. The EU, for instance, is looking to regulate product resource efficiency by setting standards on durability and repairability under the Ecodesign Directive.

They certainly have my whole-hearted support.

club had a strict ‘no mobile phone’ policy, the chairs were immediately requisitioned for covert telephone conversations, as valuable sound screens or a quiet place to doze off.

bored, she often furnished and played with old fishing boxes given to her by her grandfather.
