Textile industry today

• The last few years have seen rapid evolvement in the textile industry.

• A single manufacturing plant now handles a wide variety of products with innumerable options of processing and finishing.

• The number of dyes and chemicals used have increased manifold.

• This has helped the textile industry catch up with the ever-changing fashion industry.

Challenges faced by the industry

• The treatment and safe disposal of wastewater generated from the textile industry has become a concern.

• A wide range of dyes and chemicals used in varying proportions and combinations generate ever-changing wastewaters.

• The scarcity of raw water makes it imperative to treat the

wastewater such that it is available for reuse without any problems.

• The conventional lime and ferrous treatment is ineffective in

treating new dyes.

Challenges faced by the industry

• Traditional treatment is not able to reduce the COD and safe disposal of the treated wastewater.

• Huge quantity of sludge is generated due to lime and ferrous treatment.

• The textile industry has mainly used aerobic biodegradation for its wastewaters so far.

• It has its limitations in reducing colour and COD in a single stage.

• Huge quantity of power is consumed and biological sludge is generated.

A.T.E.’s solution

• Adopted a scientific approach by conducting treatability studies on a variety of textile wastewaters.

• Studies revealed that anaerobic biodegradation gives best results if deployed and established properly.

• Anaerobic degradation prior to aerobic processing provides excellent combined colour reduction of almost 80%.

• Anaerobic degradation reduces colour by 40-50% and COD by 30-40% without expending power or chemicals.

• Sludge generation in anaerobic treatment is 10% of that in aerobic treatment for equivalent COD reduction.

A.T.E.’s solution

• Earlier anaerobic digesters had 20+ days residence time with huge tank volumes.

• Recently, deeper understanding and effective cell retention in these systems render high rate anaerobic processes.

• Typical residence time in anaerobic processes for A.T.E. Envirotech deployed textile effluent is 0.5 – 1 day.

Results with the new technology

• A.T.E. Envirotech has implemented 9 projects based on this technology for textile plants across India.

• A.T.E. Envirotech has built anaerobic digesters up to 2.4 MLD.

• A state-of-the-art processing unit in Southern India has installed an effluent treatment plant based on zero liquid discharge.

Results with the new technology

• Lower sludge generation and chemical consumption.

• Almost 93% of the treated water is recycled for production resulting in considerable reduction of fresh water intake.

• Consistent treated wastewater quality has led to optimum performance of the downstream UF and RO plants.

• Dependency on external raw water is not a constraint for this unit’s upcoming expansion.

Customer testimonial

The Managing Director of this unit commented that, “Adopting advanced anaerobic technology for wastewater treatment and recycle should be every entrepreneur’s endeavour.”
