How far do you agree with the quote in relation to the Treaty of Versailles?

Level 2 [4-6] Agrees with the quote. Developed argument. Beginning to show signs of structure.

Level 3 [7-11] Disagrees with the quote. Solid argument. Clear structure / sound use of grammar – key words spelt correctly etc.

Why the league failed in the 1930s.

Page 45: League of Nations 1930s

Task 1 – why the league failed in the 1930s.

• Turn to page 244. Copy the cartoon.

• Task – on page 242 you have source 24. The source shows how American money helped Europe recover, economically, after WW1.

• Compare this with source 3 on page 245. What has changed or is different between the two diagrams? Is anything the same?

Page 46: League of Nations 1930s

Page 49: League of Nations 1930s

Task 2 – sounds bites.

• A sound bite is a short extract or edited part of a person speaking – maybe in interview etc.

• You often hear them on radio broadcasts.• For example – after 911 many of the stories

included a quick sound bite of George Bush saying –

• “the American homeland has been attacked – we will stop at nothing to catch and punish those responsible or in any way connected with the attack”.

Page 50: League of Nations 1930s

Task 2 – sounds bites.

Page 51: League of Nations 1930s

Task 3

• Look at source 4 on page 245.

• It shows the feelings of the 6 main countries that were suffering in the 1930s.

• Write sound bites for each of the countries leaders to represent their view points.

• These do not have to be particularly long but must sum up the feeling of the countries leaders.

Page 59: League of Nations 1930s

“ The League of Nations was a complete failure throughout the 1920s and 1930s.” How far do you agree

with the statement?• LEVEL 1: GENERAL ANSWER. ANSWERS LACK SPECIFIC CONTEXTUAL KNOWLEDGE

[1-4] F-G-Fail• e.g. The League was reasonably successful in 1920s, but failed miserably in the

1930s. May discuss several key events such as structure of league, and Wall St Crash.

• LEVEL 2: DESCRIBES Key theme (S) Agrees or Disagrees [4-8] D-E• e.g. looks at Border disputes, social factors, Disarmament. Begins to discuss these

factors over the time period. Little analysis

• LEVEL 3: EXPLANATION Agrees AND Disagrees [8-12] B-C-D• e.g. ‘Connects factors together as above but begins to give reasoned answers

Discusses the structure of the league, and the weakness at the outset with lack of US involvement. Highlights successes in the 1920s – but looks at the crisis it faced in 1930s. Discusses the turning point of the Wall St Crash and provides incisive analysis around this factor. Reaches a balanced and sustained conclusion having looked at both sides of the debate..’

•• LEVEL 4: ANALYSIS. Balanced argument with supported conclusion [12-15] A*-A/B• e.g. As above but with more depth and factual knowledge. Evidence of wider reading

around the subject. Discusses the historical debate = i.e. historians disagree over the 1920s, but most, if not all, agree over failure in the 1930s. Highlights successes outside of the LON. A mature style backed up with sound factual knowledge reaching a sustained conclusion
