LEAN Manufacturing
Lean manufacturing techniques are used
to increase profitability by reducing costs.
Lean manufacturing is manufacturing
methodologies based on maximizing
value and minimizing waste in the
manufacturing process.
Lean manufacturing employs a pull
through system to minimize waste and
improve efficiencies.
What is 5S?
5S is the name of a workplace organization
method
Developed in Japan
Utilized by Toyota and other automobile
manufacturers
Before 5S…
Scrounge
Steal
Stash
Scramble
Search
5S – in a nutshell!
Where do we start?
1. Red Tag items – Are there items that
are collecting dust?
2. These items are moved to a hold
area for disposition.
3. Once the items are approved for
disposal, get rid of them!
THE BIGGEST ENEMY TO 5S IS
PROCRASTINATING!!!
5S - Sort
Sort – Go through the affected area and look
for things that are needed, and things that
are not.
5S - Straighten
Straighten – Create
places for the items
within that area.
Make sure to label
their “home” or
create
shadowboards if
needed
Shadowboards and Housekeeping
5S - Shine
Shine – Deep clean
the area. Get rid of
all unnecessary
items.
5S - Standardize
Standardize – make 5S a habit! If you make a
checklist or have a documented procedure and
follow it daily, it WILL become a habit in a short
amount of time.
5S - Sustain
Keeping the
practice going.
After you have
established
procedures, you
need to keep
them going.
5S Implementation
Implementation is huge! Make sure you
have support from your leadership team
before implementing a 5S program
Educate everyone in your facility
– Let them know why we are implementing the
program and give them time for discussion
The “6th S”
Should safety be considered a part of any 5S
program? ABSOLUTELY!
– It never hurts to remind people of safety
How does Safety apply to 5S?
Of the 5 areas in 5S, Safety ties to all of
them!
– Cleaner workplace
– Organization
– Anyone is able to find what they are looking for
– A place for everything and everything in it’s place!
