Regardless of your skill level or type of camera equipment, the beginning of a great photograph is the moment when you decide what it is you are going to shoot. When

your goal is to capture the essence of a natural landscape, this decision becomes all important. Award-winning photographer Craig Blacklock headlines this year’s

symposium. He will share his story as a nature photgrapher and discuss his techniques and views of how photographs can connect the viewer to nature. Be among the fi rst to

view and discuss images in his new books and connect with other photographers who care about the environment. Stay for the day to explore the Arboretum through your camera. Lunch is included.

Take this rare opportunity to delve into the art of Anne Ophelia Dowden (1907-2007). Dowden was a renowned and popular botanical artist who wrote and illustrated several books on everything from plants of the Bible to the weeds of New York City. In addition to her books, which reside in the Andersen Horticultural Library, explore dozens of her actual sketches and paintings on loan from the University of Minnesota’s Kerlan Collection with Dr. Lucienne Taylor, library volunteer and curator of the Wild Green Th ings exhibit.

Th e Andersen Horticultural Library collection includes a seven-volume work considered by botanical art expert Wilfrid Blunt to be “one of the most splendid books on fruit ever produced.” Explore this work and other stunning fruit images, found in the pomological books of the mid-1800s, and in samples of nursery catalogs and nurserymen’s plate-books, with the head of the collection Kathy Allen.

and architecture, from the innovative “red books” of Humphry Repton to a look at formal gardens in England and Scotland.

MUSIC  Baroq ue composer Antonio Vivaldi created some of the most

beloved classics of Western music, including the string-rich Four Seasons, which is the subject of this new Music in the Garden series.

Learn how Vivaldi evoked storms and a frozen landscape in the concerto Winter, and delight in other favorites with acclaimed musicologist Daniel Freeman, Ph.D. Freeman has taught courses in music history at the many universities and the Smithsonian Institution, and his research has focused on composers Bach, Mozart, and Vivaldi. Each session stands on its own, but together they off er even deeper enrichment.

Enter lush summer on the notes of Baroque composer Antonio Vivaldi’s beloved Four Seasons. In the third of three music appreciation sessions dedicated to his work, you will revel in a garden setting similar to what inspired this work.
