These days the world runs at a fast pace and we’re all running to catch up. In ancient terms this running energy is equated to the hunt, when our bodies mobilize to kill prey to feed the tribe. Hormones and adrenaline are coursing through our bodies to make us strong, alert, fast and reactive.

This fight or flight state is useful when hunting a dangerous wooly mammoth. But afterwards our ancestors had days and days of rest when food was plenty. We don’t have that luxury these days. The fight or flight state we conjure up at work and on our daily commute stays with us perpetually. Because we don’t have downtime to recover, we live in this “hunting” state. And because our bodies were not meant to be in perpetual fight of flight we can begin to feel worn down and depleted.

This means we don’t have energy left over to enjoy our downtime. We don’t have energy to sustain a sex drive or to maintain romance in our relationship. Our energy had been used up. This fight or flight state eventually depletes our adrenal glands which can cause belly fat, a wired and tired feeling before bed, digestive issues and low sex drive.

When we don’t have the energy to perform in the bedroom like we do on our “hunt” we beat ourselves up at our shortcomings. This only depletes us more, this mental pressure to perform. But if we are out of energy pushing through it only makes it worse. Yet this problem is reinforced by a culture that doesn’t let us slow down. For example, going to the gym to gain energy and work off that extra weight may be counter productive as it stresses the adrenals more.

To regain your sex drive and energy and melt fat you don’t need more motion, you need stillness. We must relearn how to do nothing, like our post-hunt ancestors did. Since we don’t have days to rejuvenate we must do it in pocket-sized chunks. The best way to restore the adrenal glands is an effortless practice. This is what I teach my clients to help them heal their digestion.

Doing this for 15 to 20 minutes a day can make a huge difference in your energy level and sex drive but it can be hard to To coax your body to let go you can imagine yourself sunbathing at your favorite beach. Or take a bath, burn you favorite candle or use some lavender essential oil to create a spa-like oasis in your house.

Making time to do this practice is another story. If you are shaking your head

trying to figure out how to fit this in, then making space in your calendar needs

to be a priority. If you don’t have 20 minutes to yourself in a day your adrenals

will be perpetually “hunting”. Eventually your body won’t have the energy

reserves to meet the demands of your daily life.

It’s simple yet hard, I know. I’m a business owner, wife, step mom, a dog owner

and friend. I have many obligations in life. Yet I know that without making time

to rest and digest, I wouldn’t be able to meet these obligations with a smile on

my face.
