Most people know their Sun sign, yet no one has ever really delved into answering the question: Is astrology really a science?
Until now, that is, thanks to Mississauga engineer Tapan Das, who has just published Why Astrology Is Science: Five Good Reasons.
The slim volume is aimed at scientists, astrologers and those with a keen interest to learn a new perspective on astrology — “all those
who wonder about stars and planets and how patterns and relationships hold significant meaning for all of us,” as the author says.
Despite an anti-astrology statement signed by 186 scientists, including 19 Nobel Laureates, in 1975, the interest in astrology is greater
now than ever before, says Das.
“The paradoxical result is that the heyday of astrology was not during the benighted Middle Ages, when the average person was sunk
deep in ignorance and superstition and kept there by illiteracy and the rarity of books,” he points out. “Rather, it is now when most
people presumably know the basic facts of astronomy from space-probe photos in the daily newspaper and on TV that show that the
other planets are more or less similar to Earth and not mystical god-fires in the sky.
“At least 90 per cent of all Americans know their Sun sign. How many people know their blood type? Or the name of the Secretary of
State? Or Newton’s three laws of motion?”
Although he’s not a practitioner of astrology, Das says he’s been interested in the subject since he was a boy growing up in India. After
retiring from his job in the telecommunications industry some five years ago, he devoted all his time to research on astrology and
cosmology, with the intention of explaining astrology on a scientific basis.
Stars and planets each have a different influence on our lives depending on their positions in their signs and heavenly houses, says
Das. All these cosmic forces shape our thoughts, which, in turn, direct our actions.
“If we are warned that we are prone to rash actions due to the influence of certain planets, then we can hold a check on our emotion
and rash action and catastrophic results,” says Das. “If we know that the position of the planets gives a favourable condition, then we
can take advantage of it by proper action. This is how astrology can help without giving specific answers to specific questions.”
Das is quick to point out that astrologers should not be confused with psychics and fortune tellers.
Unlike the latter ilk, he says, genuine astrologers do not concern themselves exclusively with prediction; they use natal charts
exclusively for character analysis and counselling and refuse to have anything to do with forecasting. Why Astrology Is Science: Five
Good Reasons is published by iUniverse and can be purchased online at www.iuniverse.com and www.amazon.ca.

Astrology is the oldest science. Astrology and astronomy was intimately combined but started separating out
from seventeenth century. Astrology, from Greek word astron (stars) and logia (study of), means study of stars;
whereas astronomy, from Greek word astron (stars) and nomos (law) means laws of stars. But astrology is now
sometimes being called pseudoscience by the scientific community, although a recent poll shows that 90% of
Americans know their Sun signs (zodiac at birth time). The author by his thorough scientific research work over a
number of years has clearly explained five good scientific reasons for the scientific basis of Astrology. His
speeches and interviews have encouraged a lot of interest within his audience. His speech on scientific basis of
astrology will be an extremely interesting topic during this speaking session.

Recently Dr. Das had a talk about his book in OMNI2 TV, channel 14 on Jan 31, 2010. He also had an interview
with the host of Day Program on Rogers TV Mississauga on September 14, 2009.
Dr. Tapan Das is very knowledgeable in the subject matter area of his topic. His presentation style is scholarly,
informative, passionate, and eloquent. Being keenly aware of the controversial nature of this topic, especially
within the scientific community, he presents his case very informatively and answers all questions with an open
mind and scientific reasons.
He lucidly explains what the world needs to know and how the expanding universe with 200 billion galaxies and
each galaxy containing 200 billion stars affect human behaviour and character. Science so far has been
proceeding with the philosophy of Descartes – Cogito Ergo Sum (I think therefore I am). Scientists believe we can
explain and create all the phenomena around us. By doing that, scientific community has failed to look beyond
this blinker and is missing the important and vast areas of other phenomena which cannot be explained by direct
cause and effect approach, but subtle methods of data collection and analysis. It may not be possible to find out
the root cause and the results of the analysis just yet, similar to the fact that we still do not know the root cause
of gravity or the negative charge of an electron, other than simply explaining their properties. Dr. Tapan Das with
his in-depth research work can put astrology as a social science – to its rightful place.
