Curbing gadget
addictionGadgets (e.g. smartphones, tablets, etc.) can
be beneficial but just like anything in life, there
can be too much of a good thing. Here are some
tips on how you can encourage healthy usage of
gadgets:
1. Set firm rules on gadget use. These
include no gadgets at the dining table, or
setting a timer on the gadget itself to control
the amount of time spent on it.
2. Monitor the apps/games. Always run
through the app/game yourself to ensure that
its contents are appropriate. Massively
multiplayer online role-playing games
(MMORPGs) can be very addictive.
3. Never allow a young child unsupervised
internet use. Not all information that is found
online is child-friendly, so you will need to
exercise extra caution. If you are not able to
monitor it yourself, use a child-friendly
browser (e.g. KidZui Browser).
4. Always make it a point to communicate
with your child at all times about gadget
use. Let your child share his/her views on
how he/she feels. This way, you will have a
healthy two-way communication going which
will enable you to better connect with your
child.
5. Lead by example. As a parent, it is
absolutely critical that you understand your
role in setting an example as your child will
emulate your own gadget usage patterns.
Additionally, how you as a parent handle the
rules of gadget use will also reflect whether
double standards exist. The problem with
using the "do as I say, not as I do" parenting
method is that it will undermine your
authority, and indirectly teaches your child
that as he/she gets older, he/she doesn't
have to play by the rules. (http://www.asiaone.com/women/

SISC plans for WASC Accreditation
Renewal VisitSouthville International School and Colleges
(SISC) is preparing for the Western Association
of Schools and Colleges (WASC) Visit on March
11-15, 2018 as part of its bid for renewal of
accreditation. WASC is the regional organization
that is responsible for the evaluation of the quality
and effectiveness of schools in California, Hawaii
and the Pacific Basin. The accreditation renewal
process happens every six years (with a three
year mid-term visit to make sure the school is on
the right track), and SISC hopes to earn another
six-year accreditation with this visit.
A six-member team made up of school
administrators and teachers from various
international schools in the globe will be coming
to interview students and teachers, observe
classes, witness normal school operation, and
talk to community members. The visit intends to
make sure that the high standard quality of
education offered at SISC is maintained.
The accreditation process also enables the
school to reach out to parents, students, and
other stakeholders through surveys evaluating
SISC programs. Please answer the Expected
School-wide Learning Results (ESLRs) or School-
wide Learner Outcomes (SLOs) Assessment
attached to this bulletin to help guide the school
in the accreditation process.
The Early Childhood Education Division (ECED)
is holding an art contest for its Nursery, Pre-
Kindergarten, and Junior and Senior Kindergarten
students and their parents to stimulate the artistic
talents of the youngsters while strengthening
parent-child bonds.
Dubbed “Painting with Mom and Dad,” it’s a
contest where everyone wins in terms of fun and
parent-child bonding! It will be held on September
23, 2017, 9:00 a.m., in Luxembourg Hall at
Luxembourg Campus.
Bond with your
child through artWhy get an adult
companion ID?To ensure student safety, it is imperative that
the school is aware how its students will go
home and who they will go home with. The
Adult Companion ID is issued to the person
authorized to pick up a student. It must be
presented to the guard on duty upon pick-up
of the student for proper paging of name.
The Adult Companion ID is non-transferrable.
In case of a change in adult companion, the
Head of Discipline/Security must be informed
in writing ahead of time to avoid delays. The
old ID must be surrendered and the new ID
will be issued to the new adult companion.
SISC will not be liable for any untoward
incident that may occur to the student due to
failure in informing the school of any changes
in the Adult Companion ID.

SISC to host
international
schools volleyball
tourney
SISC will host the International Schools Activities
Conference (ISAC) volleyball competition on
October 18 - 22, 2017. It is a great privilege to
host the event since it will serve as an opportunity
for the school to benchmark, to be further
recognized, and to network with other
international schools in the country.
SISC students and athletes will gain a lot from
this experience especially those who will host
some of the visitors. They will meet new friends
and be enriched by the cross-cultural experience
through sports.
In this regard, we invite parents who would like
to be actively involved in the activity to host at
least two (2) students from Brent School Baguio,
Brent School, Subic, Cebu International School,
and Faith Academy Mindanao.
For those who are willing to help, please
check the reply slip at the end of this bulletin
or get in touch with Ms. Rea Villa at 825 -
6374 loc. 166, or the Public Relations Office
