Why are you, you???

One day a professor entered the classroom and asked his students to prepare

for a surprise test. They waited anxiously at their desks for the test to begin. The professor handed out the question paper, with the text facing down as usual. Once he handed them all out, he asked his students to turn the page and begin. To everyone’s surprise, there were no questions….just a black dot in the center of the page. The professor seeing the expression on everyone’s face, told them the following:

“I want you to write what you see there.”The students confused, got started on the inexplicable task.

At the end of the class, the professor took all the answer papers and started reading each one of them aloud in front of all the students. All of them with no

exceptions, described the black dot, trying to explain its position in the middle of the sheet, etc. etc. etc. After all had been read, the classroom silent, the professor began to explain:

“I am not going to grade on you this, I just wanted to give you something to think about. No one wrote about the white part of the paper. Everyone focused on the black dot – and the same happens in our lives. We have a white paper to observe and enjoy, but we always focus on the dark spots. Our life is a gift given to us by God, with love and care, and we always have reasons to celebrate – nature renewing itself everyday, our friends around us, the job that provides our livelihood, the miracles we see everyday…….

However we insist on focusing only on the dark spots – the health issues that bother us, the

lack of money, the complicated relationship with a family member, the disappointment with a friend etc

The dark spots are very small compared to everything we have in our lives, but they are the ones that pollute our minds.

Take your eyes away from the black spots in your life. Enjoy each one of your blessings, each moment that life gives you.

Be happy and live a life positively!

Its Upto Us What We Want To See

Darkness & The Sun

Once darkness went to God with a complaint against the sun and said,

“Oh God! Please make the Sun understand. He is making my life miserable. My existence is in dan-ger because of him.” God sent a message to the Sun and told him about darkness’s complaint. The Sun heard about the complaint and said to God, “I would like to come myself and meet this complaint; because till today, knowingly, I have not done the work of hurting anybody.”

Just as darkness is the name giv-en to the lack or absence of light, similarly most of the problems of our life are created because of the scarcity of new thoughts. If we put on our mental switch, then we can definitely find the solutions to these problems.Sometimes, people at my semi-nars ask how and how many times must we put our mental switches on; because all the time, someone or the other comes and switches it off. At this, what I have to say is that there is need to switch it on many more times than it is switched off. One who falls down

and rise it again, reaches his desti-nation and one who cannot do this only remains a stone, a hurdle on the way.

Choices - Alisha JainExcerpts from Suresh Semwal’s Book - ‘Be A Humble Winner’

Have you ever been to amusement park which has those funny trick

mirrors? Do you believe in those trick mirrors? No doubt the trick mirror shows you only. But you know that it is not the real you. It shows a distorted image of you. It looks absurd; it is far from reality even though it shows you only. You never accept it; you don’t agree with it because you know the trick and you know the real you so you know the difference.

Similarly all your thoughts are not real. Most of these thoughts especially the negative ones are absurd and distorted. You may not avoid these thought when they automatically creep into your mind. But you do not have to believe these thoughts blindly. Just because these are

your thoughts; it does not mean that you accept them as true. Do examine your thoughts, question their relevance and validity.

Remember feelings may lie but facts never. So when in doubt park your thoughts and feelings for a while and spend some time with facts. Suddenly things would start looking better and different.

For example suppose you feel ‘Nobody loves me. So I am unlovable. I am worthless.’ Ask yourself ‘are there some people who love me irrespective of who I am?” No slowly you start remembering one then two… persons. So now with this fact you are able to negate your thoughts successfully and change it to ‘yes some people do not love me but there are others who

love me unconditionally. So that does not make me unlovable or worthless. I am a normal person with some normal imperfections and I deserve all the love in this world.”

Uberola Ala Re…- Sandip Grover

First and foremost, for all my non-Marathi speaking friends, Ala Re means

has come/arrived and for my multilingual friends – Uberola means Uber & Ola, simple.

Ever since I moved to Delhi effective 31st Dec, 2015 and had my first brush with Delhi winter (well after a year actually, as I have been based out of Mumbai for the last 10 years or so and it’s only occasional that I used to come to Delhi), I started moving around in cabs. Someone told me to try Ola and I tried and got hooked.

No I am not going to speak on behalf of Ola or Uber (they have not hired us so far), but I am going to give you my perspective about this service, purely from the lens of a HR professional. How this service is changing and continues to change the whole gambit of taxi services and taxi drivers.

As all of us know these two aggregators – that’s how they are referred to, have been in India for some time. They provide cab service in major cities and are App based. An app where you can book at the press of a button after looking at the time the cab would take to reach your pick-up point and then track the movement of the cab on the app to know his whereabouts.

Now let me try and list out the changes this service is bringing to the mindset of drivers and also helping them change for better, both in terms of behavior and economical as well.

For the Drivers: Flexi Timings – Corporate India has to do a lot more to ensure this term becomes the norm, however drivers of UBER & Ola have the freedom to log-in and log out, as per his choice. They have to take a minimum number of perhaps 4 trips in a day. A driver told me he starts his day at 5 am to take benefit of the peak hours and works till 11, takes rest from 11 to 4 pm and then again works till late evening. Thus allowing him enough rest and to take care of his household chores as well.

Good respectable Income – That’s how a driver described with a smiling face. They are able to earn an unheard of Rs. 60000 per month easily. After paying Rs. 15000 for CNG, they still can earn Rs. 45000 a month. Even if they have to pay EMI of the vehicle, they still are able to have a net income of 30000 per month. A driver on the other hand earns 10000- 12000 a month. A cool 300% jump.

Incentive Schemes – The incentive plan is plain and simple – the drivers have slab system to earn more, so for example if they get 3000 rupees for 4 trips, they will earn better if they log 6 trips and even more, if they log say 8 trips. This encourages the driver to earn better rate per trip, if they put in extra work.Motivation to change Behavior - Each passenger is supposed to rate the driver at the end of the journey on the app by simply pressing the no. of stars with a space for optional comments. The driver earns an incentive ONLY if the feedback

by the passenger is 4.1 or more on a scale of 5. Obviously, the driver goes an extra mile to ensure his behavior and conduct is exemplary. Lessons to learn Corporate India.

Empowerment - The Company gives them loans/down payments to lease the vehicle on easy EMIs and after a tenure of 3 years the vehicle is given to the driver.

Sustenance Allowance - In the past, when the services of these aggregators were suspended on account of an incident in Delhi, each driver was paid Rs. 3000 per day, in case their vehicle is impounded by the Police, while they were plying the vehicle. In case of an accident or a breakdown, the driver is paid a maintenance allowance, till the time the vehicle is roadworthy. The corporate world pays sustenance allowance only if an employee is suspended.

Guaranteed Payment – the payment is credited directly to the account of driver in next 1 – 2 days. The service provider also compensates the driver of the shared vehicle, in case of unavailability of another passenger.

GPS Service – Since all the drivers have GPS enabled mobile phones. They don’t have to remember the routes and also can look for congestion en-route and take a detour if required. This has put into service lots of unemployed trained drivers from neighboring states without any knowledge of the routes of the city.P.T.O

Continue Uberola Ala Re… - Sandip GroverDouble Employment – No restrictions – Each driver is registered to both the major aggregators. He waits for the first call from either of them and switches off the second app. Plane and simple.

For the Passengers: Ease to Travel - Almost instant service with a 2 to 10 minutes wait period. This time is also well spent by looking at the app and track the movement of cab.

Shared Services – the tariff dips to almost 50%. Just imagine travelling to Airport Terminal 1D by cab from SDA/Hauz Khas in Delhi by paying Rs. 150 or so. The shared service is actually pretty good. You share the cab with another passenger only in case he/she chooses to log-in at the same time and for going in the same direction/route. The detour allowed is 500 meters or so. The app even takes care of which passenger to be dropped first so as to avoid any confusion.

GPS Service – This also helps the passenger to be taken to shortest route and also be aware of the congestion on the way. He also feels assured of being taken on the correct route.

Exemplary Behavior – The driver behaves as if you are his super master. He does not leave anything to chance with his politeness starting from the time you/he called on phone. In fact most of the time they request you to give them a good rating.

Reduced Tariffs – These services are relatively cheaper as compared to other taxi services. With shared services, you actually make a killing with paying 50% or lesser.

Gone are the days, when employer of these drivers would chose not to pay or pay lesser amount by holding a security. These people have flexi working with an ability to rake in the moolah if they so

desire. They can afford to become owners and small entrepreneurs instead of serving someone.

For the passenger, it is much awaited and an improved service. Gone are the days, when he would be waiting impatiently for the cab to arrive to have him picked with the driver giving him false hopes of being very close to the location with virtually no way for the passenger to check the reality.

Those of you who have experienced this service would have also experienced the changing social paradigm. But above all, in my personal opinion, it is a great case study for the HR fraternity. The interventions that have been implemented quite effectively thanks to the transparency and fairness to this often-neglected class of employees. So next time you hail an Ola or an Uber, be aware of the change these aggregators are bringing in our society.

A journey of thousands miles begins with a single step. - Confucius

An eccentric boss was interviewing a lady applicant for a post in

his company. He had a candle at his desk. The boss asked the applicant, “Why did the elephant eat the candle?” The lady, after the moment of pause, said “Because the elephant was crazy?” The Boss laughed sneeringly and said, “No, you brainless lady… because the elephant wanted a light snack!” The applicant was insulted. She wanted to get back

at the interviewer. “Sir,” she said, “do you know what kind of candle burns longer, a red or a green candle?” The boss was stumped. “A red candle?” he guessed. “Neither!” the lady said. “Candles always burn shorter! No brains!”

Moral – It does not pay to try to insult or bring down another person. It reflects on one’s terrible character. The wise practices mindful and kind speech.

High Blood Pressure and Corporate Wellness - Dr. Sanjay NakraHigh Blood Pressure or Hypertension, as it is better known in medical terminology is commoner than one would believe. Statistics indicate that one out of every three Indians suffers from high blood pressure and the numbers continue to rise.

This could well be attributed to increasing stress, 24x7 working conditions, improper diet and a sedentary lifestyle.

Why Is High Blood Pressure Important?

High Blood Pressure is best defined as a medical condition where the diastolic blood pressure is more than 90 mm of Hg while the systolic is more than 140 mm of Hg.

Contrary to popular belief high blood pressure is a dangerous disease condition as it can lead to…..

Stroke or Cardiac Attack - High blood pressure leads to thickening and hardening of arteries thus leading to life threatening disease conditions such as stroke and heart attack.

Cardiac Failure - When the heart is forced to pump blood against the higher pressure in the blood vessels, it has to work harder and thus over time leads to heart failure.

Aneurysms - In instances where blood pressure is not controlled it

is a distinct possibility that it can lead to sustained high pressure on the blood vessel walls. This may then lead to bulging of the walls which are better known as Aneurysms in medical terminology.

When these Aneurysms burst the condition can become an acute medical emergency.

Kidney Malfunction - If blood pressure is not treated adequately and continues to be high, it invariably leads to weakening and narrowing of the blood vessels which supply the kidneys. Thus logically this leads to impaired blood supply to these organs and can thus lead to kidney failure over a period of time.

Impaired Memory - It is indeed disconcerting that studies in recent times have now conclude beyond doubt that persistently raised blood pressure readings can impair your ability to learn, think and even remember facts and stats.

PREVENTION - The age old adage ‘Prevention is better than cure’ could not be more appropriate when the context is high blood pressure. The medical fraternity is of the opinion that those with an active lifestyle are less prone to contracting high blood pressure as compared to those who lead a more sedentary life.

Thus it could well be concluded

that if you adopt a healthy diet plan, maintain your ideal body weight and have an active lifestyle, the probability of contracting this disease condition is significantly low.

CONCLUSION - Thus it could well be concluded that in an era wherein everyone is striving to climb the corporate ladder adopting the right lifestyle could well ensure a healthy heart and body without the need to resort to medications or medical intervention.
