Page 7: Learning 2.0

What approach will you take?

Page 9: Learning 2.0

The idea originally came form Stephen Abram (Sirsi/Dynix). He wanted a way to learn new and emerging technologies. He came up with a list of 43 things he wanted to learn about over the next year, specifically related to Web 2.0. Blog, Wiki’s RSS feeds etc…..

Helene Blowers with PLCMC came up with the formalized curriculum of Learning 2.0

Self pacedSelf study 23 things

Page 10: Learning 2.0

It’s fun and guilt free!

Page 14: Learning 2.0

Listened to Helene Blowers the creator of Learning 2.0 at CIL 2007. I loved it!

I talked to our senior staff the next week. They loved it!

The next week we created our online learning 2.0 site and everyone loved it!

100% of our staff registered for the program. They did all the 21 things

on their own over a 10 day period, and they loved it!

Our staff has now completely caught up, and is keeping pace with the ever changing

world of technology and they love it!

Page 15: Learning 2.0

I did go to the Computers in Libraries Conference 2007 and listened to Helene’s presentation. I came away with the conviction that we needed to support staff in their efforts to remain technologically literate.

Risk

How prepared are you to engage in risk taking behavior?

I’m a real risk taker.

I can handle risk.

I hate risk and avoid it at all costs.

Let’s put this to the test!!!!!!!

These are the step we took

Educate your decision makers about Learning 2.0

Find others within your organization that are early adopters. You might have to hunt a little but they are out there!

Get permission to move forward

Know why you are doing this

Vision Statement

Core Competencies and Learning 2.0 at ACPL.The most important resource to our organization is its staff.

Supporting and encouraging our employees to continue to explore and develop new technological skills is the only way to keep pace with changes that we are experiencing.

Our goal is to provide a sustainable program that provides opportunities for staff to increase their skill levels in an open a sharing environment and guarantees them success.

We are proposing a plan to build on our existing curriculum and develop it further using the successful model of the Public Library of Charlotte Mecklenburg County (PLCMC).

This program is designed with two components “Core Competencies” and “Learning 2.0”Core Competencies are a set of building blocks that staff can use to build and strengthen their existing technology skills. Core Competencies focus on ensuring that everyone has the essential skills to perform their jobs. Learning 2.0 is centered on exploration and discovery. It investigates new and emerging technologies that are affecting the library world. The goal is to expose staff to new tools, encourage play, empower individuals and eliminate fear.

Timetable

What are the your 23 things? Do you need to have 23 things?

How are you going to present this to the staff?

What is your launch date?

How much time do you need to get your material together?

Is there a marketing need?

Do you need incentives?

Who is going to do what? Will you steal material from other programs or develop content in house?

Will you do anything special to launch the program?

Are there other groups that need to be educated about this program and do you need their buy-in?

Page 25: Learning 2.0

Here are the steps we took.

We decided there were other groups that we needed to educate about the Learning 2.0 program. We needed to talk to them. The leader of the team took on this challenge.

We decided that instead of 23 things we were just going to study 21 things.

Beg, borrow, steal, invent!

We set a deadline for this project. Set milestones. Defined victories and celebrated!

We then divided up the 21 things amongst the team members.
