learning analytics and the student experience - higher education smart card association forum, june...
DESCRIPTION
I presented on Learning Analytics and the Student Experience at the Higher Education Smart Card Association forum on June 3rd 2014. This talk is about how we take a transparent approach to improving the student experience by exploring the "digital exhaust" of data gathered by students' interactions with the IT systems of the modern smart campus. I look at considerations around student access to data (cf. Google Takeout) and the underlying social contract governing what student data is collected and what uses it is put to. I also look at some Jisc innovations such as our work to develop a new business intelligence service with HESA, and potential shared services around learning analytics.TRANSCRIPT

Asked whether two unfamiliar photos of faces show the
same person, a human being will get it right 97.53
percent of the time. New software developed by
researchers at Facebook can score 97.25 percent on
the same challenge, regardless of variations in lighting
or whether the person in the picture is directly facing
the camera. –MIT Tech Review

From Vaughn Bell in Slate [http://goo.gl/YW1DW0]:A respected Swiss scientist, Conrad Gessner, might have been the first to raise the alarm about the effects of information overload. In a landmark book, he described how the modern world overwhelmed people with data and that this overabundance was both "confusing and harmful" to the mind. The media now echo his concerns with reports on the unprecedented risks of living in an "always on" digital environment.

‑ Digital Exhaust – getting a “takeout” of my data‑ What new possibilities does this create?‑ What other institutional data might need
opening?
‑ Analytics as a Service – any interest?
