The Learning By Volunteering Project has been a partnership between Adam Smith College, Angus College, Langside College and Scotland Colleges to assist in embedding volunteering into the college sector. The project has also produced a wide variety of resources to support colleges with volunteering. The Learning By Volunteering Toolkit contains valuable information and resources for the college sector in Scotland and beyond.
This document provides guidance on the content of the
Toolkit and the Learning By Volunteering website. The Toolkit
has been split into three sections that are easy to navigate,
where you will find examples of volunteering and useful
documents to download and use in your own college.

Reward and Celebrate
Now your students have been taking part in volunteering, how
do you reward their efforts and support them to learn from
their experiences?
There are lots of awards out there just waiting to be given to
volunteers, it is your role to ensure students gain these awards
to enhance their experience and to add that extra sparkle to
thier CV or university application.
The Learning by Volunteering project has supported the
development of three new awards for volunteers and you will
find details of these by following the link below.

Case Study Curriculum for Excellence in Beauty Therapy
Julie Wales, Senior Lecturer in Beauty Therapy at Langside
College has created a very useful diary for her students to
record their volunteering and reflect on their work as it relates
to the Curriculum for Excellence.

The Diary can be used as a way of recording the hours of
volunteering that the student has participated in and is handed
out with the standard Volunteer Recording Card which is used
at Langside College. The main focus of the diary though, is to
use the four capacities as a way of allowing students to reflect
on and measure their contribution to society or to the college,
via the work that they do.
Beauty Therapy students at Langside are no strangers to
participating in voluntary activity and have an impressive list of
events which they have supported. Whether its International
Women’s Day, The Southside Festival or any of the many
fundraising days we have within the college, Beauty students
are actively involved.
Many of our Beauty Therapy students are volunteering within
the college in an excellent example of innovative teaching
where HNC/HND Beauty Therapy students have been
encouraged to volunteer their time passing on their newly
acquired skills to other students in our Section for Continuous
and Inclusive Learning.
The diary allows students to see the link between their
activities and the Curriculum for Excellence. It is also a very
useful tool in relating activities as a volunteer to very useful
descriptors that resonate with CV building and job applications.
