Core Values

We provide free, individualized instruction and materials to adults with low literacy skills and/or ESL needs in Craven, Jones, and Pamlico Counties. We believe in the dignity of the individual and work collaboratively with each student in the development and achievement of personal, literacy-based instructional goals. We provide on-going training and continual support to community volunteers who consistently deliver quality instruction to our adult students. We continually explore avenues which better serve to promote adult literacy in Craven, Jones, and Pamlico Counties. We provide programs which embrace multiple forms of literacy including basic, ESL, health, financial, and technological. We provide the rallying point for community advocacy and

support for adults in need of literacy education in Craven,

Jones, and Pamlico Counties.

Our Story

Craven Literacy Council is a 501 c. (3) non-profit, volunteer-based

provider of adult literacy instruction. For nearly 26 years, CLC has been

changing lives of families in Craven, Jones, and Pamlico counties by

providing adults with a place to establish and enhance basic

reading and writing skills. In recent years, CLC has also developed a

curriculum to teach non-native speakers English as a Second

Language. We use individualized learning plans for adult learners and

supplement this instruction with small groups and specialized class

instruction.

In FY 2011-2012, CLC had 116 specially trained volunteer tutors

certified by ProLiteracy Worldwide who worked with 174

students. Most of our students are actively employed in our local

labor market and are learning to be even more productive individuals,

workers, parents and citizens.

New Bern is a federally approved refugee resettlement area, part of

the US Refugee Resettlement Program. More than 1200 refugees have

been resettled in Craven County since 1991. There are 32 native

languages other than English spoken in the homes of secondary school

students in Craven County. At present we have more than 120 ESL

students representing 20 countries and more than 23 languages.

As a consequence we have a high number of students enrolled in

English as a Second language, 126, of 174 students. We currently have

48 students enrolled in Basic Literacy, designed for native

English speakers.

A Message from the Executive Director

This has been a wonderful year for the Craven Literacy Council.

This year’s report highlights a year of significant change. We have

three dedicated tutor rooms, a Resource Library, conference/training

space and a computer lab. I joined the Council on June 7, 2011 and

have had a very exciting year learning about adult literacy, non-profit

operations and how to project our important work to a very warm

and receiving public. Last year we served more than 225 adult learn-

ers. We trained 75 new tutors who joined the 70 other volunteers

already at work in our English as a Second Language or Basic Literacy

tutoring programs or in our offices. We purchased three additional

laptop computers and enlarged our Computer Lab offerings for the

use by students and tutors.

We invite you to take a moment to learn more about CLC’s

accomplishments, programs, students and volunteers. Thank you for

your support.

K.S. works diligently with his tutor to improve his English comprehension. He maintains a full-time job at a local factory but is hoping to start his own business soon with a friend.

W.M. is relishing learning to read and write well. He has become an eager author of many stories drawn from his own life experiences.

J.H. was very shy and afraid to talk to English speakers. Her confidence has increased and she can converse with the customers where she works. Another source of satisfaction for her is that she now has the ability to speak up for her-self and say “No ketchup, please!” when ordering a ham-burger.

R.H. has valued her tutor’s help with community college coursework. She has also earned both the Bronze and Silver Career Readiness Certificates, adding to her desirability as an employee.

A.A. has increased her English language skills and got her Driver’s License and started her own small business. She appreciates the ability to converse with her clients. She is currently studying to become a U.S. citizen.

S.N., while working toward his goal of passing the ASVAB test, increased his reading skills and was able to get a better job.

Basic Literacy Program CLC’s Basic Literacy program teaches American-born students to meet

their literacy goals, including improved reading, writing, math, and

computer skills. As part of our Basic Literacy Program, we also work

with students who want to pursue their GEDs. CLC’s program is the

only free one-on-one tutoring program in Craven, Jones and Pamlico

counties for native-born adults who lack basic reading and writing

skills. Tutors work with their students at least once a week, using a

variety of educational materials and techniques to improve their stu-

dent’s skills and achieve the student’s personal life and literacy goals.

During the 2011-12 program year, basic literacy students made up

about 28% of total students.

English as a Second Language Tutoring Program

CLC’s English as a Second Language (ESL) program teaches

foreign-born adults how to read, write, and speak basic English.

Volunteer tutors and their students meet weekly one-on-one or in

small groups. All lessons are conducted in English and proceed

from listening and speaking to reading and then to writing. Each

lesson includes conversational skill building activities to help

students meet their communication goals.

During this year, the ESL program continued to grow to serve more

than 140 students.

Volunteers have always been at the heart of CLC. They

serve as tutors, trainers, board members, conversation

group facilitators and office helpers. In 2011-2012, more

than 140 volunteers donated more than 9,400 hours to CLC,

including 6328 hours of direct instruction received by

students.

Our volunteers are a fascinating community of individuals from all walks

of life, including retirees, homemakers and full and part-time workers.

They include doctors, nurses, librarians, teachers, marketers, interior

designers, master gardeners, and small business owners. As varied as

they are, they all share a common desire to help members of their com-

munity learn to read, write and speak English.

CLC’s tutor training program is first-rate, fully energized and incorporates

the best practices in current educational techniques and methods. After

15 hours of classroom instruction, tutors are certified by ProLiteracy

Worldwide.

Once matched with one or more students, tutors continue to be well

supported. Tutors have the opportunity to attend in-service training

programs bi-monthly. CLC staff is always available to help tutors and

students with specific lesson plans.

What our tutors tell us…. “I cherish the opportunity to work with students in their acquisition of English language skills. The hopes and dreams of our students remind us of the importance of language and literacy skills in to-day’s world.” “For me, being a volunteer tutor/ trainer for Craven Literacy Council is my small way of making a difference in another's life while giving something back to the community. Being a literate adult can improve one's lot in life by opening many doors that oth-erwise would remain closed. If I can touch my student's life through the power of the written word then I have helped him to take the necessary steps to make his world a better place. I say often that I am not sure who learns more - my student or me. At the end of the day, I think it is me....just by giving a little of my time and helping another human being.”

The Key To Our Success

Craven Literacy Council celebrated its volunteers with a dinner

on October 18, 2011 at First Baptist Church Family Life Center.

The President’s Volunteer Service Award was awarded to 20

volunteers for contributing over 100 hours and 5 volunteers for

giving over 200 hours of volunteer service during the fiscal year

2010-2011. The most exciting news was the initial induction to

CLC’s Grand Club of Jim McNellis, Sammie Caswell, Barbara

Tucker and Connie Whitney. Each of these volunteers have

contributed over 1000 hours of service to our organization. This

honor is now acknowledged on a perpetual plaque in our office.
