We have noticed that some children are arriving at school after the 8.50am siren which means they have already lost learning time. If your child is late for school, whether they are in Reception or in year 7, the parent is required to sign the child in at the front office with the child collecting a late slip to hand to the teacher. Regular attendance assists your child not only with connecting any new learning to prior knowledge but also supports the development of the whole child, emotionally and socially. Children who are away often find it difficult to catch up on the learning; teachers are introducing new concepts daily and a child is disadvantaged upon their return to school. Friendship groups often move on when a child is away regularly making it difficult for the child to re-connect and at times maintain their friendship group; this can add to any emotional issues that the child may be experiencing. If your child is away due to illness, it is of vital importance that you inform the school and it is easy to do. National Indigenous Literacy Day September 6 is Indigenous Literacy Day a time in which we celebrate Indigenous culture, stories, language and literacy. 2019 is a significant year acknowledging internationally the Year of Indigenous Languages. On this day we also focus our attention on the disadvantages experienced in remote communities and encourage our communities to raise awareness and advocate for more equal access to literacy resources for remote communities. At East Adelaide School the Reconciliation Working Group has over the past 4 years championed the quest in ensuring remote Aboriginal communities have access to quality literature. It has been with the generosity of the EAS community that we have again gathered an enormous range of books that will ignite the imagination in the very young and in the old. Books and clothing have reached communities in the far western desert and far north. We thank Amanda Biddle for arranging the delivery of some of these resources and clothing to the west of South Australia. We also thank Annie Steven and Ian Hodgson for organising the delivery of the remaining books and clothing to the far north communities. Above all we thank you for your generous donations and look forward to supporting this wonderful initiative again in 2020. Vicki Stravinski

Swimming

In the next few weeks students in classes R-5 will be attending swimming. Please ensure that you have sent all required forms back to school as the student will not be allowed in the water unless these are sent back. Please ensure that the Front Office holds the medication, if you have stated that it will be required. For students who self-manage their asthma, please ensure that the expiry date is current.

Attendance

Regular attendance at school is a life forming habit and one that school and parents can work on in partnership. Good habits begin right from the time children start school.

It is important to ensure every individual is on time and seated in the classroom ready for learning at 8.50am.

Children who are away often find it difficult to catch up on the learning; teachers are

introducing new concepts daily and a child is disadvantaged upon their return to school. Friendship groups often move on when a child is away regularly making it difficult for the child to re-connect and at times maintain their friendship group; this can add to any emotional issues that the child may be experiencing. If your child is away due to illness, it is of vital importance that you inform the school and it is easy to do. Please call the school absentee number on 8362 4164 anytime of the day or night and leave a message on the answering machine or send a SMS to 0409 965 052.

This system makes it easy for parents and the school. We are working towards eliminating all the unexplained absences that some of our students accrue due to parents not informing the front office staff or the classroom teacher.

I thank you in anticipation for your partnership in improving the regular and prompt attendance of all our students at East Adelaide School.

School Services Officer Recognition Week

This week we celebrated the achievements of our School Services Officers. At East Adelaide, we have a wonderful team of support staff who works closely with students, teachers and the community in various roles.

They play such a pivotal role in our school and we greatly appreciate their commitment to our school community.

We sincerely thank them for their dedication and support.

National Indigenous Literacy Day

September 6 is Indigenous Literacy Day a time in which we celebrate Indigenous culture, stories, language and literacy. Students on premises before

and after school There are more and more students coming to school before 8.30am. We request that parents bring their children to school at or after 8.30am as teachers start duty as of that time.

In relation to after school, dismissal is at 3.10pm and we request that students leave the school grounds at that time. Often students are playing in the yard after school. This causes confusion in Yard B for the OSHC Educators and there is no one on duty in Yard A to supervise those on the play equipment. We seek your co-operation in following these requests.

Student Success Earlier this year, ABC Me ran a competition to be part of Sydney’s New Year’s Eve fireworks celebration, where children were invited to design their own personal fireworks sky show. Patrick entered this competition, with his design, “Sydney Sparkles”; it is all about palm trees and summer. We received a call a couple of weeks ago, with some very exciting news – Patrick was the WINNER!!! His design was chosen as the winning fireworks design, out of thousands of entries from all over Australia. His prize is pretty awesome – he gets to go to Sydney and see his design light up the sky on New Year’s Eve. In fact, he will be on LIVE ABC Me television, and will push the big red button to start the fireworks show, which will include his fireworks design from his entry.

Congratulations Patrick!

Classification of movies and digital games 2019:

Does Australia's classification system suit your family's needs? Australia's National Classification Scheme for movies, digital games and apps uses the classifications G, PG, M, MA15+ and R18+. The Australian Council on Children and the Media [ACCM] is seeking your help with its 2019 survey of parents' and carers' satisfaction with the Australian National Classification Scheme (NCS) for movies, digital games and apps. This survey will update information gathered in 2017, and takes between 5 and 10 minutes. Its URL is https:// www.surveymonkey.com/r/Y7CTFSR Your input will provide valuable data for ACCM's ongoing review of the usefulness of the NCS and levels of protec-tion for children that it provides. As ACCM is wanting to hear from as many parents and carers across Australia as possible over these next two weeks, it would be very grateful if you would circulate the survey across your own networks. For more information on ACCM, visit its Movie Review service [Know Before You Go] and its App Review Service [Know Before You Load]. After School Sports News

Soccer Our 12 years team competing in the Green division of the EZPSSA soccer competition had an outstanding season winning the premiership. We were awarded a perpetual trophy to keep until the 2020 season. Congratulations to all other teams for their fantastic seasons also. Netball Finals Good luck to all teams who will be participating in the finals starting this weekend. Do yourself and East Adelaide proud. Summer Netball Summer netball registration has closed and the team lists will be distributed early next week. For new players to our teams, a note regarding the fitting and ordering of the school netball dress will be distributed at the same time. Basketball Basketball nomination forms are out and will close on Friday September 13. Please return these to confirm your spot in a summer team. Winter Presentations With support of the Governing Council and the After School Sports Committee, we will be moving away from traditional trophies and instead move to presenting a participation certificate and brass plate to commemorate the season. There will be a personalized plaque available for purchase to attach your brass plates to. The sample plaque and certificate will be available in the front office for viewing from Monday. Details on how to purchase will be sent out via Konnective early next week. The “skills” participants will still receive their medals for their chosen sport. Information regarding the presentation night will follow in the coming weeks. Yours in sport,

Craig Ward After School Sports Coordinator [email protected] Monday-Wednesday-Friday

Sporting Schools Grant: Year 1 Students Performing Sport Aerobics and Gymnastics with Kylie Thomas

Kylie Thomas

From a very young age I have been involved with competitive Gymnastics and Sport Aerobics. I have been fortunate enough to develop a career based around my passion of competing at the highest level of my chosen sport and sharing my knowledge and passion through coaching and mentoring.

Having three young active children who help inspire and push me, I understand how children need to find an outlet to express themselves, however this may be and in what ever form this may be. I also understand that fitness and developing healthy lifestyle patterns starts from a young age and it’s important that children see fitness as FUN and something that doesn’t have to be hard or difficult.

Cricket Program

Our Reception to year 2 classes have been involved in improving their cricket skills. Instructors from SACA and SEDA College will conduct a 4 week program as part of the funastics activities and PE lessons. There will also be an opportunity for students to participate in a Junior blasters program, which is similar to Auskick.
