Moses asked God to give him a successor who will continue leading the Israelites toward the Promise Land. Who is the successor of Moses?

Son of Nun Constant companion and closest confidant of Moses

His name- “Yahweh is Salvation”

He was to lead the Israelites into Canaan after the death of Moses.

Is it easy to lead the Israelites towards the Promise Land?

The Israelites must conquer the land of Canaan to inherit it.

There was a risk of being invaded by the different tribes.

They were exposed to worship false gods (Baal- the god of fertility)

In Deuteronomy 31:23 God commissioned Joshua to become the leader of Israelites. God said to him: “Be brave and steadfast, for it is you who will bring the Israelites into the land

which I promised them.”

Joshua knew he had to faithfully obey and trust God’s commands for His people to successfully conquer Canaan.

Example of God’s guidance to Joshua: Crossing the River Jordan

God commanded Joshua to send the Ark of the Covenant into the water first. The water miraculously receded allowibng the Israelites to cross the river.

Obedience, faith, and dependence on God made Joshua one of Israel's strongest

leaders.

BATTLE AT JERICHO

Joshua sent two spies to explore the city of Jericho and the surrounding country. The two men were almost captured but they managed to escape with the help of a woman named Rahab.

TASKS GIVEN TO JOSHUA AND THE ISRAELITES:

1. All soldiers circle the city and march around it once.

2.Do this for 6 days with 7 priests carrying ram’s horns ahead of the ark.

3. On the 7th day, march around the city 7 times as the priests blow their horns.

4. Have all the people shout aloud when the priests give the signal with a long blast from their horns
