Kevin Strickland elected bishop of the ELCA Southeastern Synod
6/3/2019 3:45:00 PM
CHICAGO – The Rev. Kevin L. Strickland, Chicago, was elected June 2 to serve a six-year term as bishop of the Southeastern Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). The election took place during the synod assembly, held May 30 – June 2 at the Chattanooga (Tenn.) Convention Center.
Strickland was elected on the fifth ballot, with 199 votes. The Rev. Tiffany Chaney, pastor of Gathered by Grace Lutheran Church in Montgomery, Ala., re-ceived 158.
The bishop-elect has served as assistant to the bishop and executive for worship with the ELCA churchwide organization in Chicago since 2014. He served as pas-tor of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Nashville, Tenn., from 2011 to 2014, and of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Maryville, Tenn., from 2008 to 2011.
Strickland received a Bachelor of Arts from Newberry (S.C.) College in 2004 and a Master of Divinity from Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in 2008. Newberry is one of 27 ELCA colleges and universities, and Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary of Lenoir-Rhyne University, Hickory, N.C., is one of seven ELCA seminaries.
Strickland will be installed Oct. 5 at St. Philip's Episcopal Cathedral in Atlanta.
The Rev. H. Julian Gordy has served as bishop since 2007 and will retire Aug. 31.

Dates to remember:
June1-30 Cereal Box Challenge
The annual Cereal Box Challenge is scheduled from June 1-30. Local residents and
businesses will have an opportunity to donate boxes of cereal to benefit A Friend’s House,
a local children’s shelter.
A Friend’s House provides approximately 5,400 breakfast meals each year for children and youth who live there, said Operations Manager Angie Beaver. She said the Cereal Box Challenge has been a “tremendous blessing” for the shelter since its inception.
“The cereal boxes donated to us means we do not have to purchase cereal for a year until
the next donation,” said Beaver. “This has become something we depend on financially
and our children look forward to each year. The delivery of the cereal boxes brings much
excitement in the home as the children and youth begin to ask if their favorite cereal is on
the way. The smile alone that it brings on these children’s faces is more than enough.”
“Birthday in a Bag” ministry
Members and friends can purchase basic supplies such as cake mix, icing, candles,
crepe paper, balloons, small plates and napkins and place them in a Birthday bag.
Bags will then be donated to A Friend’s House and given to a family with no means
to celebrate a birthday.
