NAME:___________________________ Math 7.1 Mr. Rogove Date:__________ G7M1L3: Identifying Proportional Relationships by Graphing 1 Learning Objective: We will identify proportional and nonEproportional relationships by graphing them on a coordinate plane (G7M1L3) Concept Development: We can take ratio tables and plot the data on a coordinate plane. x#axis: This is the horizontal axis. y#axis: this is the vertical axis. Origin: The point where the xEaxis and the yEaxis intersect. The ordered pair at the origin is (0,0). Independent Variable: this always goes on the xEaxis. Often, this variable is time. Dependent Variable: This always goes on the yEaxis. Examples: In a race, the distance you run is dependent on how long you run for…therefore, distance is the dependent variable and time is the independent variable. If you have 2 cookies for every 3 ounces of milk, the amount of cookies you will eat is dependent on how much milk you have…so cookies is dependent and milk is dependent. If you are depositing money into a bank account on a weekly basis, the amount of money you have deposited depends on how many weeks have passed, so money is dependent, time is independent.
