Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this exercise, a student should be able to:• Understand the principles of light microscopy, in
particular the concepts of resolution, magnification, and depth of field/focus;• Effectively use the microscope to view slides of
different cell types;• Correctly employ the oil immersion lens to view
eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells;

Learning Objectives (cont.)
Upon completion of this exercise, a student should be able to: (cont.)• Appreciate the general size
difference between pro-karyotes and eukaryotes; and• Recognize the various shapes
of some common types of bacteria

Handling a Microscope
• Always carry a microscope with one hand on the arm and the other under the base.• Always use lens paper to clean the
objectives and eye pieces of a microscope. Never use paper towels, Kimwipes, etc.• Before storing the microscope, always clean
it appropriately and remove all slides.• Always store the microscope with the low
power objective (4X) in place.Copyright © C. R. Cooper, Jr.
