I have decided to create a music video as my final project. For this music video I have chosen the song ‘Bow Down’ by Beyoncé Knowles as this song intrigues me, due to the fact that its so different to her other songs as the lyrics are aggressive and fairly vulgar. The song has caused controversy in the media because of this, which has pushed Beyoncé to not make a music video for it. all the media attention this song has raised make me interested to make a music video to match its attention seeking and explicit manner in an interesting way. Nevertheless main reason I have chosen to make a music video for this song is that, there is no music video for the song.

Selection and Justification

Beyonce ‘Bow Down’ This mood board

expresses the theme and scene of this

music video idea, I would want this

music video have hip hop themes like graffiti, wild dance moves, eccentric,

over-the-top outfits and colourful

scenery. I would want this music

video to be quirky, fun and fast pace.

Question What Is Your Opinion On My Music Video Idea?

Do You Think This Music Video Is Appropriate for My Target Audience?

Do You Think This Music Video Will Suit The Genre Of The Song?

How Do You Think I Could Improve The Concept Of The Music Video To Gain A Larger Audience

How Do You Think This Music Video Compares to Related Ones In The Industry

Annie Its fun and quite commercial

Yes, but it can be powerful and influential for the wrong reasons

Yes, Defiantly Make it appeal to different people by adding different scenes

Its similar and mainstream

Sophie I like the idea of your music video and think it will suit the target audience well, I think that it will be exciting and will attract many making the single sell well.

Yes it will attract them well

Yes I think the video will fit well to the song

Add lots of colour and make the images bold

Its similar to them, which will make it blend well in the industry

Page 9: Learning Outcome One (Part One)

Josh Its very pop like, and humorous (like a parody

Yes, but some elements of it provide a negative light on the target audience

yes It’s a bit too strange for older and younger people, so tone down the vulgar content

Its too unique to be compared to the commercially successful videos

Charlie I like the idea and think it would work well with a young audience

The ideas of the music video will appeal to a young audience but not for a good reason, as it’s a bit improper

Yes, as it has all the fundamentals of a hip-hop/pop music video

At the moment it would only appeal to a younger audience as an older audience would find it hard to relate to the content

Its similar to other videos of its kind

Hayley Its different. It’s a modern way of looking at the industry

Yes, but I you must be careful who it influences

Yes it would, because it goes with the lyrics

Using bright colours and not making it so explicit

This idea is a little more humorous

Page 10: Learning Outcome One (Part One)

After receiving the feedback from my survey I observed that a lot of people liked the idea of my music video, and would actually tune in to watch it, this makes the idea successful as all the people I surveyed are into the genre of my music video idea. A lot of people thought my music video would appeal to my target audience of 15-26 year old individuals, but it wasn’t appropriate for them as the content within it is vulgar, explicit and badly influential to the younger individuals within my target audience, which tells me that I would have to illuminate the discourteous and sexually explicit elements and themes, this would also help me gain a larger target audience in the process as I could gain a larger audience (younger people would be able to watch it and older individuals would not be put off by it), on-the-other-hand I must be careful how much of the vulgar and explicit content I do not use as there is always a risk of losing the interest of my target audience I had in mind in the first place. Analysing my feedback I found that everyone who participated think that the music video is appropriate for it genre as it contains all the elements of a typical pop/hip-hop music video (catchy dance routines, flashy outfits and outlandish scenery). In comparison to other music videos, people think that my music video is similar to others in the industry, which would make it blend well, but this is also a concern as it means my idea will not stand out from its competitions, I will have to develop my idea further to make sure its unique and different to others in the industry.

Analysis of Idea Development After Feedback

Range Of Materials Needed For Music Video After all the pre-production and planning of such objectives as location (s), artists and narrative etc.. I will need a variety of materials to produce a top quality music video, these include,

Cast And Crew- an artist has nothing to paint without a subject, in this case without a cast (artist/actors) to film in my music video, I have no music video, I would Also need a crew to help me and my artist or cast members, such as make-up artist, stylist, camera man etc. Film Equipment – this is one of the most important factor to producing this music video as, it would be impossible to film the music video without the proper filming equipment, this would include such equipment of a digital video camera, tripod, dolly track etc.Transport- I will need to be able to provide myself, my filming equipment and cast/crew transport to get to all the different locations that we need to film in. Props and Costumes- as this is a music video is my actors and artist have to look eccentric and interesting, which means I will need the right clothing and makeup, I will also need to provide the set with any props used in any scenes, such as peddling bikes, cars etc. Speakers (Playback device)- my artist need to be able to sing along to the song on time and on beat, so I must provide speakers to playback the audio on the set.

Skills You Have To Carry Out This Project

To successfully pull of the responsibility of creating this project to the highest possible standard, I will need a number of skills and knowledge on producing a music video.

Creativity- I have the ability to think of many ideas and alternatives as possible which is extremely useful as you will need to be able to think of interesting scenes to film and equally interesting alternatives if original ideas don’t go to plan.

Filming/studio- I have a good knowledge of filming using filming equipment, which is essential to the project, I also know how to set up a filming studio, using lighting, setting up camera’s, using dolly tracks and setting up camera positions and identifying and using different camera techniques.

Directing- My actors and artist will look to me for direction of what to do, where to move and how to move, I have the ability to give instruction in a respectable understandable manner

Appropriate Content base for Audience

The majority of my target audience is individuals (mainly female) aged 15-26 and most of them would be Beyoncé fans, I feel that most Beyoncé fans have certain expectations of most Beyoncé music videos, as her fans are use to a certain style and visuals, as Beyoncé is known and respected in the industry for not being an artist who uses vulgar language or overly-sexualised content to sell her music or music videos.

That being said, the song bow down cause controversy because it broke these boundaries and the lyrics were considered discourteous and offensive, and I think that must be taken into consideration within this music video, whether the fans of Beyoncé appreciate a controversial music video to a controversial song or not, the controversy is bound to draw an interested to the video.

Nevertheless, the music video must be controversial but not offensive to the audience, there must be a limit to how far the vulgar content goes into the video, as making it too unrefined and uncivil, will not only potentially loose a lot of audience but the music video could be banned or limited to availability

Production Techniques Needed For Production

Timing and Reliability- I am able to keep time management to plan with project which makes me reliable to the team, this is important if the project needs to be complete at a certain date.

Team Work- I am able to work with and lead my team responsibly and respectably through the creation process of this.

Efficiency – shooting a music video can be stressful and a lot of issues can occur and some can be uncontrollable such as, disruptive weather conditions and underperforming artist or actors, I am able to find solutions and substitutes for such situations quickly and effectively.

Editing- my music video will need to be well edited before being published, and rather than hire a editor I possess the skills to edit a video on different software at professional standards

Codes And Constraints

Looking into codes and constraints of this production involves looking into the morality of the content of this product. As its extremely important to take in consideration whether you could potentially offend or disrespect anyone with your product.

Legal and Ethical Issues- these are some of the legal and ethical issues I must take in consideration when producing my music video.

discrimination to anyone based on such factors as race, sex, disability is illegal within the media industry, my music video will not feature any discrimination of any kind.

National Security-Filmmaker (me) must be knowledgeable national security laws such as the official secrets act 1911 and the prevention of terrorism act.

Page 16: Learning Outcome One (Part One)

Copyright is on of the most important issue the media industry. Legal protection is enforced to protect original material, so it can’t be used in somebody else's name or credited to someone else, this is gonna be a key issue for me to solve as the audio I am making my music video to does not belong to me.
