You, Your Child and Your Library Children’s learning starts at home and you are your child’s first and best teacher. Reading together is the most important gift that you can give your young child. We hope that you will introduce them to the magic and wonder of books as early as possible.

In this workbook, you will find many activities to do with your child. We encourage you to read lots of good books together. Books can be borrowed free of charge from your neighbourhood branch of Surrey Libraries. No child is too young to have a library card of their very own. There is no minimum age and no charge. A library card is a key that unlocks the world of information and imagination. Happy reading and learning!

Ces livres peuvent être empruntés gratuitement dans votre quartier à la succursale de la bibliothèque publique de Surrey. Aucun enfant n’est trop jeune pour avoir une carte de bibliothèque. Il n’y a pas d’âge minimal et c’est gratuit. La carte de bibliothèque est la clef qui vous permet d’accéder à tout un monde d’information et d’imagination.

How to use this workbook

• There are activities in this workbook to complete with your child. • You may need scissors, glue, tape and crayons. • Work on one activity at a time. • Read a few books related to the topic at the end of each activity. Visit your local library

to borrow them. You can ask library staff for help in choosing books your child will enjoy.

Library Basics Library Card Library cards are free to anyone living in Surrey. Children 12 years of age and under require the signature of a parent or guardian to get a library card. Adults require two pieces of identification, showing their name and current address. Lost Cards Your library card is like a credit card. You are responsible for any item borrowed on your card. Report a lost card to your nearest branch immediately. Returns Materials may be returned to any branch of Surrey Libraries. Always check your receipt to ensure accurate due dates. Most materials can be borrowed for 21 days but there are some popular materials that have a shorter due date. Overdue Notices and Bills Overdue service charges are charged for each day that an item is late. Charges are based on the type of material borrowed. If a child borrows adult materials, they will be charged adult charges.

Les enfants de moins de 12 ans ont besoin de la signature d’un parent ou d’un tuteur pour obtenir une carte de bibliothèque. Les adultes doivent présenter deux pièces d’identité indiquant leur nom et leur adresse actuelle. Cartes perdues Votre carte de bibliothèque est comme une carte de crédit. Vous êtes responsable de tout ce qui est emprunté avec cette carte. Indiquez immédiatement la perte de votre carte de bibliothèque à votre succursale. Retours Tous les articles empruntés peuvent être retournés à n’importe quelle succursale de la bibliothèque publique de Surrey. Quand vous empruntez un article, vérifiez toujours la date de retour indiqué sur votre reçu. La plupart des articles peuvent être empruntés pour une période de 21 jours mais d’autres articles en demande ont une période d’emprunt plus courte. It’s my first day of School! What should I do? Parents should read and explain this page to their child Before school starts Parents or caregivers will need to go to your local school as soon as possible in the New Year to register your child for Kindergarten. First day of school

• Be on the playground area 10 minutes before the bell rings. You don’t want to be late on your first day of school. Remember to take a healthy snack for snack time with your new friends. If you will be staying all day, remember to bring a lunch.

• Wait for the bell to ring.

• Once the bell rings, line –up at the Kindergarten door with the other children and wait for your teacher to come and get you. Line-up one child behind the other.

• The teacher will come for you and you will enter the school.

• Wave to your parents and tell them you will see them at the end of your school day.

• When inside the school, always remember to use your quiet voice. There will be lots of other children in your new school, you do not want to be loud.

• As you walk down the hall to your class, keep your hands to yourself, always look at the front of the line. Do not run or play in line. It is always a good idea to look at your teacher.

• Once in your classroom, you will hang up anything you brought with you (coat, jacket, school bag, etc.)

• The teacher will likely ask you to go and sit on the carpet area. You will listen as your teacher reads you a story or tells you what you will be doing. Your school day is full of lots of fun, playtime with your new friends, storytime and so much more.

• When your school day is over, you will get ready to go home. Make sure you have helped the teacher clean up and all the toys are put away. You will be able to play with them again the next time you are at school. Get all your things together that you will be taking home.

• Now it is time to go home. Your parents will be waiting for your outside.

Avant le début de l’école Les parents ont besoin d’appeler l’école dès que possible en début d’année pour inscrire leur enfant à la maternelle. Le premier jour d’école

• Tu ne veux pas être en retard pour ton premier jour d’école! Sois dans la cour d’école 10 minutes avant la sonnerie. N’oublie pas d’apporter avec toi un casse-croûte que tu prendras à la pause avec tes nouveaux amis. Si tu restes toute la journée, apporte aussi un lunch.

• Attends la sonnerie.

• Quand la cloche sonne, mets-toi en rang à la porte de la maternelle avec les autres enfants et attendez ensemble que votre enseignant ou enseignante vienne vous chercher. Alignez-vous l’un derrière l’autre.

• L’enseignant ou l’enseignante vient vous chercher pour entrer dans l’école.

• Dis au revoir à tes parents et dis-leur que tu les reverras à la fin de la journée.

• A l’intérieur de l’école, n’oublie pas de toujours parler à voix basse. Il y aura beaucoup

d’autres enfants à ta nouvelle école et tu ne veux pas être trop bruyant!

• Lorsque tu marches dans le corridor vers ta classe, ne gesticule pas trop et regarde toujours devant toi. Ne cours pas et ne joue pas dans le rang. C’est toujours une bonne idée de regarder l’enseignant ou l’enseignante.

• Une fois dans ta salle de classe, tu accrocheras à l’endroit prévu ce que tu as apporté

avec toi (manteau, veste, sac d’école, etc.)

• L’enseignant ou l’enseignante te dira probablement où aller t’asseoir sur le tapis ou le plancher. Écoute bien l’enseignant ou l’enseignante qui lira une histoire et te dira ce que tu dois faire. Ta journée d’école sera remplie d’activités inéressantes, de temps libre avec tes nouveaux amis, de périodes d’histoires et plus encore!

• À la fin de la journée, tu te prépareras à rentrer à la maison. Aide l’enseignant ou

l’enseignante à nettoyer et à remettre les jouets à leur place. Tu pourras jouer avec ces jouets la prochaine fois que tu seras à l’école. Ramasse tout ce que tu ramènes à la maison avec toi.

• Il est maintenant temps de rentrer à la maison. Tes parents t’attendront à la sortie de

l’école.

Kindergarten Language Expectation Your child will be able to: Use language patterns and sound patterns to identify words and predict the next word. Activity: Brown Bear, Brown Bear Instructions:

1. Borrow the book Brown Bear, Brown Bear by Bill Marin Jr. from your local library. Ask your child to look at the picture on the cover and have your child predict what the book will be about, based on what they see.

2. Before you read the story, turn each page and have your child name the animals and colours.

3. Read the book together with your child.

4. Colour the animals in this booklet.

5. Say the names of each animal. What sound does each animal make?

6. Have your child draw a picture to end the story.

Kindergarten Mathematics Expectation Your child will be able to identify and create simple patterns. Activity – The Three Little Pigs Instructions:

1. Read and enjoy the story with your child.

2. Cut out the finger puppets and dramatize the story with your child.

3. Cut out the Three Little Pigs pictures, and the three pictures of the Wolf.

4. Arrange the pictures in a pattern: Pig, Wolf, Pig, Wolf, Pig, Wolf. This is called patterning.

The third little pig built a house of bricks. One day, a big, bad wolf knocked on the first little pig’s door. He said, “Little pig, little pig, let me come in.” The first little pig said, “Not by the hair on my chinny chin-chin.” The big, bad wolf said, “Then I’ll huff and I’ll puff and I’ll blow your house down.” And he did! The first little pig ran to his brother’s house that was made of sticks. The big, bad wolf knocked on the second little pig’s door. He said, “Little pig, little pig, let me come in.” The second little pig said, “Not by the hair on my chinny chin-chin.” The big, bad wolf said, “Then I’ll huff and I’ll puff and I’ll blow your house down.” And he did! The two little pigs ran to their brother’s house. The big, bad wolf knocked on the third little pig’s door.
