Lecture 101 – Who is a Sikh – Part 8

Pillars of a Spiritual Life

ਧਾਵਤੁ ਰਾਖੈ ਠਾਕਿ ਰਹਾਏ ॥ He restrains his wandering mind, and keeps it under control. ਕਿਖ ਿੰਗਕਤ ਿਰਕਿ ਕਿਲਾਏ ॥ The company of such a Sikh is obtained only by Grace. ਗੁਰ ਕਿਨੁ ਭੂਲੋ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਏ ॥ Without the Guru, he goes astray and continues coming and going. ਨਦਕਰ ਿਰੇ ਿੰਜੋਕਗ ਕਿਲਾਏ ॥੫॥ Bestowing His Mercy, the Lord unites him in Union. ||5||

ਿਾਿ ਿਰੋਧ ਵਕਿ ਿਰੈ ਪਵਣੁ ਉਡੰਤ ਨ ਧਾਵੈ ॥ Lust and anger are brought under control, when the breath does not fly around, wandering restlessly.

ਕਨਰੰਿਾਰ ਿੈ ਵਿ ੈਦੇਕਿ ਹੁਿਿੁ ਿੁਕਿ ਿੀਚਾਰੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥ Dwelling in the land of the Formless Lord, realizing the Hukam of His Command, His contemplative wisdom is attained.

ਨਉ ਦਰ ਠਾਿੇ ਧਾਵਤੁ ਰਹਾਏ ॥ Those who close off the nine gates, and restrain the wandering mind,

ਦਿਵੈ ਕਨਜ ਘਕਰ ਵਾਿਾ ਪਾਏ ॥ come to dwell in the Home of the Tenth Gate.

ਓਥੈ ਅਨਹਦ ਿਿਦ ਵਜਕਹ ਕਦਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਗੁਰਿਤੀ ਿਿਦੁ ਿਣੁਾਵਕਣਆ ॥੬॥ There, Anhad Shabad vibrates day and night. Through the Guru's Teachings, the Shabad is heard. ||6|| Ang 124

Bhakti begins at Naam.

This is found above the 9 doors and in the 10th.

ਗੁਰਿੁਕਖ ਭਗਕਤ ਕਜਤੁ ਿਹਜ ਧੁਕਨ ਉਪਜੈ ਕਿਨੁ ਭਗਤੀ ਿੈਲੁ ਨ ਜਾਏ ॥ The Gurmukh practices that devotional worship, by listening to the Sehaj Dhun; without this devotional worship, filth is not removed.

ਨਾਨਿ ਿਾਿਕਣ ਕਪਰਕਹ ਕਪਆਰੀ ਕਵਚਹੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥੧॥ O Nanak, the soul-bride who sheds selfishness and conceit from within, is dear to her Beloved. ||1||

Naam is in us, no one can give it to us.

ਿੂਖਿ ਿੂਰਕਤ ਨਾਿੁ ਕਨਰੰਜਨ ਿਾਇਆ ਿਾ ਆਿਾਰੁ ॥ But to the subtle image of the Immaculate Name, they apply the form of a body. Ang 466

ਨਉ ਦਰਵਾਜੇ ਦਿਵੈ ਿੁਿਤਾ ਅਨਹਦ ਿਿਦੁ ਵਜਾਵਕਣਆ ॥੩॥

Beyond the nine gates, the Tenth Gate is found, and liberation is obtained. The Unstruck Melody of the Shabad vibrates. ||3||

ਿਹਤੁ ਿਿੀਰ ਨਵ ੈਘਰ ਿਿੂ ੇਦਿਵੈਂ ਤਤੁ ਿਿਾਈ ॥੩॥੨੨॥੭੩॥ Says Kabeer, the nine openings of the body are being plundered; rise up to the Tenth Gate, and discover the true essence. ||3||22||73||

What separates us from God and Naam?

Why can’t we just put our dhyan right away above these 9 doors?

Maya has two forms

1. Physical- 5 elements

2. Subtle- Thoughts

Maya is made up of the 5 elements.

For the Mind to experience Sach (Truth) it has to remove its self from the cloth of the 5 elements.

This creates the wall and the veil / parda.

The body is the wall the mind is the veil.

ਇਹ ੁਤਨੁ ਿਾਇਆ ਪਾਕਹਆ ਕਪਆਰ ੇਲੀਤੜਾ ਲਕਿ ਰੰਗਾਏ ॥

This body fabric is conditioned by Maya, O beloved; this cloth is dyed in greed. 721

Mind

ਇਹੁ ਿਨੁ ਿਰਿਾ ਇਹੁ ਿਨੁ ਧਰਿਾ ॥ ਇਹੁ ਿਨੁ ਪੰਚ ਤਤੁ ਤੇ ਜਨਿਾ ॥ ਿਾਿਤੁ ਲੋਭੀ ਇਹੁ ਿਨੁ ਿੂੜਾ ॥ ਗੁਰਿੁਕਖ ਨਾਿੁ ਜਪੈ ਿਨੁ ਰੂੜਾ ॥੩॥ These are the actions of the mind commits and this is the Dharma of the Mind. This mind is born of the five elements. This mind is Sakat, perverted and greedy. The Gurmukh chants Naam and the mind becomes beautiful. ||3||

Our Mind is transformed by Greed and our Body is colored in Greed.

3 qualities of Maya

The mind is Sukhum (subtle) and susceptible to both physical and imagined realties. This is the challenge.

This Game is played with the mind.

ਕਿਰਗ ਕਤਰਿਨਾ ਕਜਉ ਜਗ ਰਚਨਾ ਯਹ ਦੇਖਹੁ ਕਰਦੈ ਕਿਚਾਕਰ ॥ ਿਹੁ ਨਾਨਿ ਭਜੁ ਰਾਿ ਨਾਿ ਕਨਤ ਜਾ ਤੇ ਹੋਤ ਉਧਾਰ ॥੨॥੨॥ Think about this with your heart, that this world and your life is a mirage of desire. Says Nanak, Baj (Chant) Nit (all the time) and have deliverance. ||2||2||536

ਿਹਿਾ ਇਹੁ ਿੰਿਾਰੁ ਹੈ ਿਕਰ ਜੰਿੈ ਆਇਆ ਜਾਇਆ ॥

This world is an illusion; it dies and it is re-born-it comes and it goes in reincarnation. 138

Mind In Harchanduri

ਹਕਰਹਾਂ ਹਕਰਚੰਦਉਰੀ ਪੇਕਖ ਿਾਹੇ ਿਚੁ ਿਾਨਈ ॥੨੦॥

Oh Har! Why do you think this Harchinduri is True!

ਿਚਾ ਨੇਹੁ ਨ ਤਟੁਈ ਜੇ ਿਕਤਗੁਰ ੁਭੇਟੈ ਿੋਇ ॥ਕਗਆਨ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਕਤਰਭਵਣ ਿਿੋੀ ਹੋਇ ॥ ਕਨਰਿਲੁ ਨਾਿੁ ਨ ਵੀਿਰੈ ਜੇ ਗੁਣ ਿਾ ਗਾਹਿੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੭॥ True love shall not be broken, if the True Guru is met. Obtaining the wealth of spiritual wisdom, the understanding of the three worlds is acquired. So become a customer of merit, and do not forget the Immaculate Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||7||

Where is God?

ਿਨਿੁਕਖ ਿੋਿੀ ਨਾ ਪਵ ੈਗੁਰਿੁਕਖ ਿਦਾ ਹਜੂਕਰ ॥੫॥

Understanding does not come to the self-willed manmukh. But to the Gurmukh, the Lord is always close. ||5||

ਏਿਿ ਏਿੈ ਆਪੁ ਉਪਾਇਆ ॥ਦੁਕਿਧਾ ਦੂਜਾ ਕਤਰਕਿਕਧ ਿਾਇਆ॥ ਚਉਥੀ ਪਉੜੀ ਗੁਰਿੁਕਖ ਊਚੀ ਿਚੋ ਿਚੁ ਿਿਾਵਕਣਆ ॥੪॥

First, the One created Himself;

Second, the sense of duality;

Third, the three-phased Maya.

The fourth state, the highest, is obtained by the Gurmukh, who practices Truth, and only Truth. ||4|| 113

ਆਇ ਨ ਜਾਇ ਿਿੈ ਇਹ ਠਾਹਰ ਜਹ ਆਿਨੁ ਕਨਰੰਿਾਰੋ ॥੧॥

This mind does not come and go; it abides in that place,

where Nirankar keeps His asan. ||1||

ਗੁਰਿੁਕਖ ਇਹੁ ਿਨੁ ਭਗਤੀ ਜਾਗੇ ॥ ਅਨਹਦ ਿੁਕਣ ਿਾਕਨਆ ਿਿਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ॥ ਆਤਿੁ ਚੀਕਨਹਹ ਭਏ ਕਨਰੰਿਾਰੀ ॥੭॥ The Gurmukh mind’s devotion is in an awakened state. Hearing the Anhad, this mind contemplates the Shabad, and accepts it.

Seeking itself (the mind), it finds the Atama attuned to Nirankar. ||7||

Shabad

ਿੋਈ ਿਕਰ ਗਲ ਿਣੁਾਵ ੈਹਕਰ ਨਾਿ ਿੀ ਿੋ ਲਗੈ ਗੁਰਕਿਖਾ ਿਕਨ ਕਿਠਾ ॥

If someone recites to them the story of the Lord's Name, it seems so sweet to the mind of those GurSikhs.

ਿਿਰ ਿੰਿ ਿਿਾਣ ਏ ਿਿਰੁ ਿਾ ਨੀਹਣੋ ॥ ਿਿਰ ਿੰਦਾ ਿਾਣੁ ਖਾਲਿੁ ਖਤਾ ਨ ਿਰੀ ॥੧੧੫॥ Within yourself, make patience the bow, and make patience the bowstring. Make patience the arrow, the Creator will not let you miss the target. ||115||1384

ਿਿਰ ਅੰਦਕਰ ਿਾਿਰੀ ਤਨੁ ਏਵੈ ਜਾਲੇਕਨਹਹ ॥ ਹੋਕਨ ਨਜੀਕਿ ਖੁਦਾਇ ਦੈ ਭੇਤੁ ਨ ਕਿਿੈ ਦੇਕਨ ॥੧੧੬॥

Those who are patient abide in patience; in this way, they burn their bodies. They are close to the Lord, but they do not reveal their secret to anyone. ||116|| 1384
