Learning is changing!
Mobile Learning
• Any sort of learning that happens when the learner is not at a fixed, predetermined location, or learning that happens when the learner takes advantage of the learning opportunities offered by mobile technologies.
• Learning with portable technologies including but not limited to handheld computers, MP3 players, notebooks and mobile phones. M-learning focuses on the mobility of the learner
Ubiquitous Learning
• Ubiquitous learning (u-learning) is equivalent to some form of simple mobile learning, e.g. that learning environments can be accessed in various contexts and situations.
• The ubiquitous learning environment (ULE) may detect more context data than e-learning. Besides the domains of eLearning, u-learning may use more context awareness to provide most adaptive contents for learners.
Learning Objectives
• Master professional words about mobile &
ubiquitous learning
• Know the development situation of mobile &
ubiquitous learning
• Know some professional websites

Key Sentences
• Mobile learning is any sort of learning that
happens when the learner is not at a fixed,
predetermined location, or learning that
happens when the learner takes advantage of
the learning opportunities offered by mobile
technologies.
• Mobile learning supports the learning process
rather than being integral to it.
• Over the past ten years, mobile learning has
grown from a minor research interest to a set of
significant projects in schools, workplaces,
museums, cities and rural areas around the world.
• The mLearning community is still fragmented,
with different national perspectives, differences
between academia and industry, and between the
school, higher education and lifelong learning
sectors.
• Technology is something to understand not
something to fear.
• Using new machines is not necessarily a sign
that ubiquitous learning has arrived.
Characteristics of u-learning
• Permanency: Learners never lose their work unless it is
purposefully deleted. In addition, all the learning processes are
recorded continuously everyday.
• Accessibility: Learners have access to their documents, data, or
videos from anywhere. That information is provided based on their
requests. Therefore, the learning involved is self-directed.
• Immediacy: Wherever learners are, they can get any information
immediately. Thus, learners can solve problems quickly. Otherwise,
the learner can record the questions and look for the answer later.
• Interactivity: Learners can interact with experts, teachers, or peers
in the form of synchronies or asynchronous communication. Hence,
the experts are more reachable and the knowledge becomes more
available.
Characteristics of u-learning
• Situating of instructional activities: The learning could be
embedded in our daily life. The problems encountered as well
as the knowledge required are all presented in their natural and
authentic forms. This helps learners notice the features of
problem situations that make particular actions relevant.
• Adaptability: Learners can get the right information at the
right place with the right way. Moreover, ubiquitous learning
can be empowered by Computer Supported Collaborative
Learning environments that focus on the socio-cognitive
process of social knowledge construction and sharing. There
are also trends to incorporate other than computers, PDAs or
phones.
