How can I read ..?

Reading Skills

Academic reading skills

Quoting (in-text citation) First, we need to know what is meant by citation. A citation is asign to the source of information used in your research. Any time you directly quote, paraphrase or summarize the essential elements of someone else's idea in your work, anin-text citationshould follow.In-text citations alert the reader to an idea from an outside source.

Read the following passages and try to identify the quotation. Justify your answer

Considering language learning, Kody (2015, p.9) asserts that the BL model does not reject the usefulness of traditional model, but rather improves its possibilities. The objective of BL implementation is to optimize the process of language development through providing learning environment that reinforce classroom language instruction.

Documentation style

To understand an academic text, you should recognize rules of in-text citation that enable you to differentiate between the authors words and other sources of information. Such rules are stated by a documentation style.

APA Documentation style

APA Style has been developed for academic institutions by the American Psychological Association. It style is most commonly used to cite sources within the social sciences. The rules of APA Style, detailed in thePublication Manual of the American Psychological Association the 6thedition

Chicago/Turabian Documentation

Kate L. Turabian'sManual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertationspresents two basic documentation systems: notes-bibliography style (or simply bibliography style) and author-date style (sometimes called reference list style).

Rules of Quoting

Rules of Quoting

Direct Quotationsmust be identical to the original. They must match the source document word for word and must be attributed to the original author.

Short quotations less than 40 words are parenthetically cited as follows

b. Long quotations more than 40 words are cited as follows:

Paraphrasing: involves putting a passage from source material into your own words. Paraphrased material is usually shorter than the original passage.

Example Abdullah has published a paper in 2015. The following are her words (original words) in page 9.

The idea of BL isnt new to the language pedagogy. Technology mediated language learning courses have been investigated since the 1980s through the emergence of the computer assisted language learning approach (CALL). Computers have been used within classrooms, outside classrooms, or both as a medium that supports foreign language learning (FLL) processes

Another researcher may quote these words through paraphrasing as follows

Long time ago, BL has been used and investigated in Foreign language instruction (Abdullah, 2015)

Abdullah (2015) has rooted the use of technology in foreign language learning to early 1980s

Chicago documentation style Note-bibliography (NB)

In the NB system, you should include a note (endnote or footnote) each time you use a source, whether through a direct quote or through a paraphrase or summary. Footnotes will be added at the end of the page on which the source is referenced, and endnotes will be compiled at the end of each chapter or at the end of the entire document.
