1 Course Goals Learn what a computer is (and is not), Understand the types of problems suited for

computers Learn how to use a computer to solve problems In this class, we will:

– cover the organization, operation and characteristics of computers; 

– introduce you to applications of commercial software such as word processors, spreadsheets, databases packages, and communication packages.

1 Lab Sessions

Your labs will be based on exercises from the Office 2007 textbook– The purpose of each lab is to give you an opportunity

to practice and then demonstrate skills in using these common and important application software

Lab assignments will be published on the class website the week before the lab is due.– Bring a copy of the assignment and the textbook to the

lab session (instructors will NOT provide copies)

assigned lab instructor (TA) Missed labs can be made up, with lab

instructors permission, at 20% penalty/week late.

1 Grading Grades earned in this class are for:

– Lab assignments (average for 13 labs, weight 30%)– Topics exams (2 @ 20% each, weight 40%)– (Somewhat) Comprehensive Final Exam (weight 30%)

Final letter grades:– 90 to 100 is an A (hopefully, most of you!)– 80 to < 90 is a B– 70 t0 < 80 is a C– 60 to < 70 is a D (improbable, but somewhat possible)– < 60 is an F (highly unlikely, but humanly possible)

Exams may be made up within one week of the scheduled exam date, provided:– you have a valid, verifiable emergency that

prevented your from attending the scheduled session, or

– you made arrangements in advance due to an excusable (by my definition) absence, and

– satisfactory arrangements can be made by you to schedule the make-up exam with one of the TA’s within the specified one week period.
