April 2020

A Turning Point

In each of the first three Gospels, there is a turning point. It begins as Jesus

asks disciples, “who do people say that I am?” ( Mark 8:27, Luke 9:18, Mat-

thew 16:13) After this, immediately comes Peter’s first identification of Jesus

as messiah. And then everything changes...

“From that time on, Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Je-

rusalem and undergo great suffering at the hands of the elders and chief priests

and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.” (Matthew 16:21)

Or more starkly put in Luke:“When the days drew near for him to be taken

up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem.” (Luke 9:51)

This marks the point of no return in the Gospels. Yes, there will be more

teaching and healing and controversy before the final week. But inexorably

Jesus’ life and ministry move him towards a final confrontation in the Holy City

Jerusalem.

Have you followed the footsteps of Jesus as part of your Lenten discipline?

You might review Matthew’s account from 16:21 through chapter 27. Every-

thing moves towards Jerusalem and the week we now call Holy.

Join us online for worship throughout Lent. The link for weekly services can

be found on our church website, www.fredericksburgpc.org.

The miracle of resurrection, the heart of the Gospel – ‘why do you look for the

living among the dead?’ and, ‘The Lord has risen indeed!’ will ring out again

this Easter.

May you trace and appreciate the steps Jesus took for us all. Walk with us,

through Lent, towards Jerusalem, and to the bright dawn of Easter! The turning

point of all human history!

See you in worship.

Pitch Hit & Run Though the coronavirus pan-

demic could alter plans, Pitch, Hit

& Run and Jr. Home Run Derby

are still on in May. The health and

safety of all involved are

paramount.

Seeking Church School Teachers Have you ever felt called to teach?

Maybe you have a passion for young

people. Maybe you are ready to try

something new or return to something

you enjoyed after a break. The

Christian Ed. Committee is seeking

teachers for the 2020/21 Church

School year (fall & spring) for

children, youth and adults. There are

wide variety of opportunities available.

Know that we strive to have enough

teachers for each class so that this is

not an every week commitment and

you will have the support of the CE

Committee and others. Please consider

giving your time and talents helping

with Church School. If you need more

information or have the desire to teach,

please contact Lindsey Williams or

Brittany Tamminga at the church.

Cold Weather Shelter The Cold Weather Shelter has closed

for the 2019-20 season. We thank the

following volunteers who went in

teams to the shelter each Wednesday

where they assisted in making beds,

setting out snacks, and checking the

night guests in for the night: Dick

the supplies the teams took with them

each week and to those who so

generously donated these items!

Congregational Retreat Many thanks to all who made this

year’s Congregational Retreat,

Awakened by the Spirit: Finding Joy in

God’s Nature, a tremendous success.

Between Saturday, March 7, and

Sunday, March 8, 85 members and

friends of our congregation gathered at

Camp Hanover to share in a time of

fellowship, worship, and fun through a

wealth of activities. Participants

engaged not only their minds and

bodies through hands on activities like

churning butter, playing nature-themed

games, or imprinting leaves onto clay

pots, but also their spirits through

meditation, deep conversation, and

imaginative prayer. For those who

weren’t able to attend, it’s never too

early to begin thinking about next year!

Save the date: March 13-14, 2021.

Youth Fellowship While all in-person Youth

Fellowship activities and events are in

recess. We will seek to keep in touch

with youth and their families through

various electronic communications.

Please be on the lookout for more

information to come regarding what

that looks like. In the meantime, if all

youth could please make sure Pastor

Tamminga has an updated email

address and cell phone number (for

those that have one) that would be very

helpful. Thank you.

Opportunities to Give Session has prioritized the

ongoing work of the Food

Pantry, Good Samaritan Fund,

and Pittman Fund. Your faithful

pledges and gifts continue to

bless others even while we are

apart.

Your regular and designated

offerings are most appreciated in

these days.

To volunteer to help, please

contact the church office,

540-373-7057,

[email protected].

Thank You! We received the following thank you card from a recent

recipient of our Good Samaritan Fund:

We are very appreciative of the hand up help pledged

by your church.

Thank you.

Thanks I’m writing to express my appreciation for the wonderful

memorial service for my husband, Clifford O. Werner.

Thanks to our pastors: Rev. Allen Fisher and Rev. Brittany

Tamminga, the Congregational Care Committee and all

the members of our church who contributed to my

husbands memorial service and reception. Thanks also to

the PW Circle of prayer, the people who brought food, set

up tables, and cleaned up. It was a beautiful reception.
