LED Filament Lamps: Going back to the future

The benefits of LED lamps in a home or

a workplace are increasingly evident

to all. Recent reports indicate that LED

lighting will grow from a 5% share in

2010 to 45% of the global marketplace

by 2020. Yet manufacturers like Integral

remain vigilant on factors that influence

consumer opinion. Despite the obvious

cost savings, increased longevity and

improved quality of light, some potential

customers remain resistant to change.

The look or ‘form factor’ of a lamp is

seen as a key weapon in the battle to

win customer acceptance. In the GLS

category, a new wave of innovative

LED ‘filament’ lamps has arrived that

seek to mimic the familiar ‘bulb’ design

of the incandescent era. It would seem

that the cutting edge of LED product

development is concentrated on

producing a lamp that closely resembles

the luminaires invented by Edison and

Swan 140 years ago.

Not much has changed over 50 years with incandescent lamps. LED on the other

hand has made significant progress in only 3 years. Efficiency has increased by

around 30% in a short time and with the advent of LED filament technology LED

bulbs have now mirrored the classic look that consumers are used to.

Additionally, the surrounding inert

gas which is again highly thermally

conductive, dissipates the remaining

heat and effectively removes the need

for an unsightly heatsink, characteristic

of earlier generations of LED GLS lamps.

The next design challenge facing our

team of engineers was to produce an

LED GLS capable of operating like an

incandescent lamp, especially when

controlled by domestic dimmer circuits.

The goal of launching a dimmable LED

filament has been hotly pursued by

the Integral laboratory over the last 12

months. The realisation of this objective

has been incorporated into the new

OMNI range; a true LED replacement to

the traditional incandescent bulb.

Conventional dimmers starve the

power from a lighting circuit by rapidly

switching the current on and off.

Importantly, the physical dynamic of

a conventional heated filament emits

a constant smooth light under this

dimming process. In contrast, an LED

array has no latency and will flicker

under the same controlled power source.

In order to achieve a continuous level of

illumination, LED lamps require complex

circuitry and components to store a

compensatory charge between cycles to

maintain a regular and non-fluctuating

light. Our new dimmable OMNI range

has been developed by replicating the

compensatory circuitry and embedding

new IC components which have reduced

the complexity and space on board. This

has enabled our designers to fit all the

necessary dimming controls inside the

cap of the lamp. Hence, retaining the

familiar bulb form factor.

The introduction of the new dimmable

OMNI marks the launch of a new

generation of breakthrough LED

products that will finally establish

solid state, energy efficient lighting

as the light source of choice for all UK

households by offering the consumer

a familiar lamp that even a Victorian

inventor would recognise.

Essentially, most consumers want a light

source that is identical to the familiar

shape - visually compatible with table

lamps, chandeliers (in the case of candle

bulbs) and wall lights. In the case of the

Integral GLS range - the LED filament

provides an ideal solution for a lamp

that emits light evenly in all directions

akin to the traditional tungsten and

halogen lamps that we know well. The

mid-powered LEDs are aligned on a

thin strand of a thermally conductive

substrate and require relatively low

power which translates into less heat.

Sunset Filament Lamps

Integral LED has introduced the Sunset LED

filament lamp range to meet the on trend demand

for vintage style lamps. The lamps provide a very

warm glow at 1800K CCT with a wide beam angle

to give a classic aesthetic look and ambience in

traditional or modern fittings. Using the latest

LED filament technology and glass, the 2.5W, A+

energy rated Sunset lamps deliver an 85% energy

savings over incandescent lamps and a lifetime of

15,000 hours. The Sunset filament lamp collection

includes a variety of dimensions and shapes for use

in hospitality and the home.

A journey back to glass

Luminaires in the halogen era were

designed to allow light to pass through

the wall of the globe – effectively

shining light backwards. This feature

was intended to spill infra-red and ultra-

violet light sideways in order

to dissipate the intense

heat that is emitted

by a tungsten

filament. Many

l u m i n a i r e s

(especially in

bath rooms)

are designed

to allow this

a t t r a c t i v e

iridescent and

multi-coloured

light to be

pooled on the

ceiling and other

adjacent surfaces. To

enable this effect, the lamp holder in many

fixtures was cut back to surround the stem

or cylinder of the lamp itself.

Our Classic Glass range of glass bodied

LED GU10s have revived the aesthetic

look of a dichroic halogen spotlight.

Our intention at Integral is to

make LED lights that are a

good fit for our customer’s home or

workplace. Everyone can enjoy the

many advantages of a switch to LED;

cost and energy savings tend to be

the most highlighted but there

are aesthetic benefits too! For

instance, the quality of light and

the sheer range of cool through

to warm white colours are a

wonderful feature of our

LED lighting range.

However, meeting

our customer’s

needs is not

purely a matter

of offering new

features. It is

also essential to

match consumer tastes. In t e r m s

of retrofit lamps, we must also cater for

the familiar and offer true replica LED

replacements for the halogen lights that

our products replace. This is perfectly

illustrated by the development of our

Classic Glass GU10 range and our

journey back to glass.

The solid therma-plastic body of

alternative LED models has been

replaced by glass which is a perfect

complement for many existing

decorative luminaires.

The Classic Glass range also features the

popular ‘fly-eye’ lens that reduces glare

by focussing the light beam through a

collimated prism. The source consists of

several LED chips or surface mounted

devices that combine to generate a

‘COB-like’ light that decreases the heat

profile of the lamp thus allowing for the

use of glass.

The Integral Classic range is an ideal

choice for bathrooms and kitchen where

low profile lamp-holder luminaires

often feature. A choice of 2700 and

4000 colour temperatures is also a

useful way to deliver a functional light

for a work surface or alternatively a

more ambient illumination over a dining

or lounge area. Effectively, the silver

mirrored exterior of the GU10 presents

a universal finish which does not clash

with any luminaire, whether it is silver,

bronze, black or white.

At Integral, we aim to offer our customers

an aesthetically equivalent light to the

familiar 50-watt halogen lamp they wish

to replace; whilst delivering the cost-

saving benefit of a light that requires

less than 5 watts of power to produce

the same illumination. In a nutshell, at

Integral, we believe the ideal lamp is

one that fits seamlessly into the existing

fixtures and fittings with a familiar effect.

Keeping warm with light

Lighting designers (like me) have

embraced the advent of LED lighting

with great enthusiasm. Essentially we live

to paint with light and in harness with

our interior design partners, we aim to

enhance and complement the furniture,

soft furnishings, wall coverings and all the

aesthetic elements that create a beautiful

space within a home or workplace.

LED lights, as a solid state technology,

have hugely widened the colour pallet,

compared to the available options in

the era of incandescent and fluorescent

lamps. It seems new colours and hues

are becoming commercially available

every day and colour changing control

technology is entering the mainstream.

However, no choice is more perplexing,

than selecting the correct shade of white

light for a room.

When designing a lighting scheme,

one is caught in a state of deliberation

between feel and function.

Essentially this determines the

specification of colour temperature

in the illumination to suit the activity

of the occupants of the room. The

colour temperature is measured in

degrees kelvin and typically ranges from

2700K (warm white) through 4000K

(standard white), 5000K as cool white

and 6000K as daylight.

In highly functional spaces like

kitchens, a ‘cool’ colour is deployed to

provide maximum illumination for the

preparation of food and the safe use of

knives and mixers etc. At the other end

of the scale is the creation of a space

with an ambience. It would seem that

words that describe an emotional state,

like relaxation, calm, conviviality and

welcome, are all defined by warm colour

light tones. We naturally see a yellow

tinged light as warm because it evokes

a connection with the flames of a fire

or the intense heat from the sun on a

summer’s day. Similarly, blue links us to

a cold, icy, winter scene.

Hence, lighting schemes designed for

restaurants and bars that aim to promote

a relaxed ambience, favour a warmer

white light with a yellowish hue at

2400K to 2700K. It is self-evident, that

the colour of light provokes a deep and

powerful psychological response within

us all. In fact, science has revealed an

‘SCN cell’ within our eyes that is hard

wired to our brain. The natural sensor is

most stimulated by blue light keeping a

person awake; whilst red light promotes

rest and sleep. Behavioural psychologists

have established a link between warm

light and perceived attractiveness. It

seems that evidence of oxygenated

blood in the face (when enhanced by

warm light), triggers subconscious

signals of a healthy match!

In my work as a designer, I specify many

LED lamps and luminaires from the

Integral range. I am a particular fan of

their very warm 2400K lamps available

as GU10 spotlights and GLS ‘globes’.

Additionally, I’m excited about the new

retro-look ‘Sunset’ lamps that replicate

the Edison lamp design of the Edwardian

era. Already popular in many leisure

venues – these ‘squirrel-cage’ lamps have

now arrived as LED filaments with all the

inherent cost savings. At 1800K, they are

the closest to candlelight that is prudent

in a modern lighting scheme and they

bathe a space with warm lustrous tones

LED lighting can be a hard

market to navigate. With so

many companies making

claims of quality, it can be

difficult to know which ones

to trust.

You only have to check a few

online retailers to find companies who are

trying to take advantage of the increasing

popularity of LEDs by flogging poor quality

imported products for rock-bottom prices. If

you are sourcing a white box product then

you can expect problems down the line.

However if you pay premium, from a

reputable company, it’s only right that a

product does what it says it will on the box.

In control

Product quality is the chief concern at

Integral LED, which is why the company

invested in its light laboratory in April 2013

as a means of ensuring the products they

deliver to the UK market are up to standard.

Of all the testing procedures carried out

in the lab, the most important are the quality

checks performed by the two integrating

spheres. The spheres are a means of

measuring the strength of a light source. A

lighting product is illuminated inside a

closed sphere to start the test. The inside of

each sphere is covered with a precise,

reflective coating which diffuses light. Like a

drop of water, the light hits the surface of

the sphere and spreads evenly, allowing for

accurate measurements to be taken.

Detecting equipment inside the sphere

measures the strength of the light source

sending constant data to the engineers in

the lab for the duration of the test.

The lab conducts around 50 tests a

day in the spheres, covering about 20

lines a week. All lamps are preheated

before entering the sphere and the

sensors inside are regularly calibrated to

ensure a consistent comparative

measurement in all tests.

While the spheres verify the light

quality of the products, the lab

technicians run several other tests to

check the products’ capabilities, including

longevity and dimming ability. Technicians

regularly check the thermal output of

lamps in use to make sure they don’t over

heat. The lab also has a dimming rig

check how the products fare with some of

the most used dimming systems in the

UK. Technicians can monitor how

effectively each lamp dims, look out for

flicker and compare the results from

increasing and decreasing the load.

For a relatively small company,

reputation is vitally important. “Building

relationships is an important part of what

we do, with both customer and supplier,”

says Managing Director, Sunil Kotecha,

“We have to be vigilant with who we

chose to partner with and with the

products we deliver to our customers”.

Most installers just want a reliable LED

product that will do exactly what it says on

the box, with no complaints from the client.

The light lab allows Integral to stay in

control of the quality of their products and

help maintain the trust of their installer

With LED panels more light doesn’t

always mean more power. Just

like cars - you can have highly efficient,

high tech models that will save massively

on fuel compared to inefficient petrol

guzzling models.

This is true for LED panels - many

manufacturers are still using older

technology to drive their “cheap” panels.

While initially you may save a few pounds

per panel, over the lifetime of the panel

and taking into account only energy

costs, a considerable financial saving can

be made by choosing the more efficient

LED panels from Integral.

Integral LED panels use the latest

technology to deliver ultra-efficiency and

high light output. They use less power to

produce comparable light output than

less efficient panels, providing financial

savings year-after-year of up to 44%.

LED products are designed to last many

years. Both the long term financial and

environmental benefits of installing

Integral LED panels are significant in terms

of cost savings and energy efficiency.

For larger projects the savings are very

substantial, however no matter what

size the installation, savings will quickly

exceed the difference in panel unit cost.

Lumens are a measure of the total light output. The higher the lumens,

the higher the light output. Lumens divided by power (Watts) gives a

measure of the efficiency of an LED panel. The higher the lumens per

watt, the more efficient an LED panel is. This is comparable to miles-

per-gallon (MPG) or litres-per-100km for fuel efficiency.

Make sure you check the lumens-per-watt rating. For example, an

LED panel with a 3600 lumen output and a power rating of 45 Watts

would have an 80 lumens-per-watt rating (80 lm/W). In comparison,

Integral LED panels have a lumens-per-watt rating of 100-140 lm/W,

up to a massive 75% efficiency improvement.

Our surface mounted boxes have been designed

so that Integral LED panels can be installed into a

surface where it is not possible, or desirable to fit

as a recessed luminaire. Its simple features provide

easy and secure installation with a stylish matt white

finish. We also offer a frame for recess fitting our

600x600 panels in a plaster ceiling, enabling a

professional looking flush-fit finish.

replacements in a choice of colour temperatures

and cut-out sizes with L1 /L2 compliance.

The broad range includes ultra-thin round LED

panel downlights for narrow ceiling voids and

walls, high lumen output downlights for retail and

Integral LED offer a range of lighting solutions for wall and

ceiling installation in a wide range of both commercial and

residential applications. All are engineered from tough,

high-grade polycarbonate material.

Tough-Shell Bulkheads are IP44 rated and suitable for all

indoor areas such as hallways, stairways, walls and ceilings

including bathrooms (Zone 2) and covered (sheltered)

external areas, such as porches.

Halo Bulkhead is water-resistant to IP65, vandal-

resistant with an IK10 rating and suitable for indoor

and outdoor areas. The Halo illumination effect

provides an impressive, elegant result that makes the

luminaire ideal for decorative wall and ceiling lighting.

Our Slimline luminaire is a low-profile ceiling/wall

light, available with optional microwave sensor and

emergency power features.

Integral LED strips are produced to a high standard to

ensure consistency in colour across the strip and are

available as either indoor (IP33) and outdoor (IP65/

IP67) versions. IP65/IP67 strip has high quality silicone

that encapsulates the strip, providing excellent water-

resistance whilst maintaining consistent light output.

Each 5m reel is supplied with an easy-to-follow

installation guide and appropriate fitting accessories

for the LED strip. 3M backing tape is pre-applied to

all Integral strips to simplify the installation process.

Additional accessories are available to suit specific

installation requirements.

Applications: Commercial environment, reception areas,

boardrooms, hospitality industry, restaurants, hotels, clubs

and pubs. For lighting hallways and staircases.

logistic premises and consumer residential.

Batten can be linkable

using the supplied cable

entry IP65 gland.

IP65 LED Battens

Integral IP65 LED battens are highly efficient,

perfect for new installations and ideal for

replacing traditional waterproof luminaires

(18W to 70W).

The batten range has a white injection moulded

housing and diffuser. To connect more than one batten

in a series use the cable entry gland supplied with the

batten. Fixing brackets are also included and the LED

driver is integrated to minimise installation times.
