“Leeds Formula Race Team is a
group of skilled and driven
Engineers from the University of
Leeds, working towards a shared
goal of producing a single seat
race car to compete at Formula
Student UK at Silverstone in July
2015. This year the team is
aiming to finish in the top 10 UK
Universities at FSUK. This will be
achieved with a well designed,
reliable vehicle that Leeds is
proud to present.”
Scott Walker, Team Leader
The Competition Formula Student is a competition for engineering students to design, build and
compete a formula style race car. Run by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, the
British event is held at Silverstone and attracts universities from all over the world.
The competition consists of both static and dynamic events which are judged by an
expert panel of industry experts. The judges also offer valuable feedback during the
competition.
Static Design: The team need to justify design
decisions to the event judges. The teams
technical knowledge is well tested!
Cost: The true cost to build the car,
regardless of sponsorship, this provides a
level playing field for all universities.
Business: The team present a business
case for the car and prove that it would
be profitable if mass produced.
Technical Inspection: The car is
inspected by the judges to ensure its
compliance with the competition
technical regulations.
Dynamic Acceleration: A 75 metre sprint from a
standing start.
Skid Pan: A test of the cars lateral
acceleration capability, the car drives a
constant radius corner in both directions.
Autocross: A single lap around a
complex track with sharp turns and some
straights.
Endurance: A 22km time trial style race
with a single tank of fuel and driver
changes.
Fuel Economy: Using data taken from
the endurance test the cars are graded.
Meet the Team Leeds Formula Race Team consists of students from across the Engineering
Faculty. Level 3 and 4 students undertake specific academic projects on the car,
while level 1 and 2 understudy the older students and assist in the manufacture
and car build. Involving level 1 and 2 students assists in a seamless transition
from one season to the next.
Leeds Formula Race Team can boast significant industry experience, with
many of its members completing a year in industry or a prestigious summer
placement. Companies include: Gibson Motorsport, Red Bull F1, Cummins and
Rolls Royce. This experience enables our team to more effectively implement
their technical knowledge to a practical application, a skill that is so vital in
Formula Student.
The team is grouped into 3 areas: Chassis & Suspension, Engine, and
Driveline & Brakes. These are lead by Hägar Niblett, Tom Allchurch and
Dominic Cotton respectively. The team will be continuing to run, test and
develop last years car, F15, throughout the design and build of F16 to test and
validate planned upgrades and developments.
What’s in Store for 2015
Each group will be undertaking innovative projects to optimise and develop
new components. The Engine team will be tuning and optimising the intake
and exhaust of our new KTM 500 EXC engine. Chassis & Suspension group
are allowing the suspension geometry to drive the chassis design to ensure
great car handling. The Driveline & Brakes group are investigating custom
brake callipers as well as the installation of a new differential.
Where you come in
This year will be the 16th car designed and built by the Leeds Formula Race
Team. The team have a proud history of success with many trophies and
accolades including the first UK university to compete at the American
Formula Student. This success is only possible through the dedication of our
team and continued support from our sponsors.
Team sponsorship is used to facilitate design and allow innovative
projects to be carried out which push and expand our knowledge and
capabilities. Team support can take many forms including use of technical
facilities, time with experienced engineers, supply of materials or simply a
financial boost to the teams budget.
As a return on your investment the team can offer company promotion
through a logo on the car and team clothing, coverage through our social
networking outlets. In addition to this the team produce a monthly newsletter
with a technical update on progress throughout the design and build process.
