NAMcontinuestoassistour

neighborsinemergencyfinancialsituations.JanuaryandFebruary2013werequitebusywithassistancewithrent,utilitiesandheatingexpenses.NAMhasalsobeenabletohelpassistwithcarrepairsandregistrationinordertohelpneighborsmaintainemploymentorcontinuejobsearches.AnOpenHousewillbeheldlaterthisspring.

AftertwelveyearsofserviceastheheadofNeighborhoodAssistanceMinistry,KarlMarshpassedthetorchtoKathyLaba.Karl’spresenceonMondaysisgreatlymissedbyinterviewersandneighborsalike.

1.)LCNhasaccesstosourcesofsubsidizedfood.WepurchasefoodfromplaceslikeFeedingAmerica,whichchargesusaflatrateof12to16centsperpound.Ifyoupurchasedsomeofthesamefoodsatagrocerystoreanddonatedthemyou’dpaymuchmore.

2.)NotallfoodsweliketosupplyareavailablefromFeedingAmericaorourothersources.Weregularlypublishalistoftheitemsonourwebsitethatarenotavailablethroughthosesources.Duringfooddriveswealsohavelistsoftheseneededfoods.

3.)Personalitems,ifavailablefromoursources,arelimited.Barsoap,toiletpaper,shampoo,tampons,andsanitarynapkinsareitemsthatarealwaysinshortsupply.LCNcountsondonationsfortheseitems.

4.)LCN’sNeighborhoodAssistanceMinistry,alargepartofLCN’sworkandbudget,reliesoncashdonationstohelpwithfinancialemergencies.Helpfromthisprogramislimitedandpaymentsaremadedirectlytothirdpartiesonlyaftertheneedisverified.LCNreceivesnodiscountsonheatingbills,gasolinecards,andotherbills.

5.)Teachingchildrenabouthelpingothersoftenbeginswithafooddrivewherethechildrencollectcansofsouporotherfood.Forchildren,charityisbestunderstoodwhentangibledonationslikefoodaregiventoothersinneed.Thechildwhobringsacanoffoodtothelocalfoodpantrytodaymaybetheonewho,inthefuture,seestheneedtomakeafinancialcontribution.

InSeptemberof2012,westarteddelivering70bagstoelementaryschoolchildreninSuttonsBay,Northport,andLeland.Wenowdeliverbagsoffoodto105childrenandhaveaddedLeelanauMontessoritoourschoolroster.

AlongwithsharingthegeneraldonationstoLCN,ourBlessingsinaBackpackprogramhavereceivedgrantsfromtheGenuineLeelanauFund,SuttonsBay‐BinghamFoundation,andtheUnitedWay.Manycommunitymembershavegenerouslydonatedcashaswell.Alongwiththecashdonations,manypeoplehavedroppedoffchild‐friendlyfoodstosupplementthebagseachweek.ImmanuelLutheranChurchinLelandwithhelpfromBethanyLutheraninNorthport,SheilaWick,andSusanHoltzdonatedquiltsforeachchildduringtheholidays!

FoodRescuecontinuestoprovideperishablefoodstouseachweek.Bagelsarealmostalwaysgivenalongwithchips,crackers,juice,carrotsandevenmangoes!Wetrulyvaluethispartnership!Inordertoguaranteethatthechildrenreceivefreshfruiteachweek,weareusinganonlineprogram.MealTrain.com.DonorscangotothiswebsiteandnavigatetoBlessingsinaBackpack‐Leelanauandsignuptobringfreshfruitfortheweek(s)oftheirchoice!Thechildrenlovetheoranges,apples,bananasandClementines!InAugustwewillactivatethissign‐upcalendarforthe2013‐14schoolyear.Manyvolunteerscometogethereachweektopackthefoodinbagsandthendeliverthemtotheschools.

InJanuaryasurveywasconductedwiththestaffatthe4participatingschoolstosolicitinputonhowtheprogramwasgoingandwhethertheneedsofthechildrenwerebeingmet.Wehaveusedthisinformationinourpreparationsforthe2013‐14schoolyear.Welearnedthattheprogramneedstobeexpandedtoreachmiddleandhighschoolstudents,andweanticipatesigningup130to150childrenthisfall,almostdoublethenumberwestartedwithin2012.
