The final term of the school year is quite a busy one, with many events running in succession and testing the skills of our staff. Recently we had the whole school final assembly for the Year 12 students. This somewhat emotional event was attended by over 200 parents and was an informal goodbye from the teachers and students. This was followed by an enjoyable luncheon at Eat Greek attended by the Year 12s and teachers.
The Year 11 ATAR exams will be held from 30 October to 10 November, whilst the Year 12 ATAR exams will be held from 30 October to 24 November. The Year 10 exams will take place on 13 and 14 November and the lower school will be completing assessments. I would like to wish all students the best in their exams and assessments.
From mid-November I will be joining 28 enthusiastic students on the 2017 Space Camp and USA tour for three weeks. During this time Judy Semple will be Acting Principal.
On Thursday 7 December the Valedictory for the Year 12 students will be held at UWA. Tickets are available from the Finance department once clearance forms have been completed and handed in.
The school has recently launched our new website. After we sort out a few teething problems, it should become a much easier-to-navigate site than the old one. We have also launched a new Facebook page that will contain short messages and reminders, but will not replace the website or this newsletter.
As part of keeping all students and staff safe the school is required to run evacuation and lock down tests. Before the end of the year we will be testing our equipment and processes. The aim is not to alarm anyone but to test ourselves and ensure our emergency procedures work well in practice.
I would like to take the opportunity to thank the School Board for their contributions this year. The Board assists the school in the vital role of governance and advice on school directions. The Board has now been in place for three years and early next year we will be calling for the formation of a new Board. The last meeting for the year will be on 6 November in the school conference room near the administration block. This meeting is an open meeting and any member of the community is able to attend. Please RSVP to the school reception to advise of your attendance.
Finally, a big thank you and congratulations to the Year 12 students and on behalf of Leeming Senior High School, we wish them all the best for their future, be it study or career pathways.

STUDY SKILLS IN THE LIBRARY
This term we are running a Study Skills Session on a Wednesday afternoon 3-3.30pm. This session is for all students and encompasses all aspects of learning and organisation.
As it is Term 4, we are focussing on time management and working out how to prioritize school, sport, social activities, device management etc.
Every module has information, podcasts, video, activities, quizzes and games to reinforce the topic. Students create their own username and every activity that they complete is tracked.
Parents are encouraged to log on and have a look at the various sections and work with their child. This program can be worked on individually, directed by a teacher as well as in groups.

FAREWELL YEAR 12 HASS STUDENTSAs the HASS Year 12s knuckle down for their final ATAR exams and practicals, their proud HASS teachers foresee brilliant careers for our Careers & Enterprise students, riches for our Economists, world class adventures for Geographers, terrific times for Historians, and self actualisation for our Psychologists. It has been an educational journey for all of us and your HASS teachers over the years sincerely wish you all the very best.

ROMAN REVOLUTIONArmed with gladius and spear and sporting a pair of magnificent shields, two fierce Roman legionaries attempted to annex Ms Turner's Year 7 class earlier this term. Tyler and Zara based their elaborate models on real ancient Roman artefacts as part of their final History project. Other Year 7 classes chose to abandon their old fashioned scrolls for the project and have instead written "books," a truly revolutionary idea.
YOUTH TO YOUTH YARNHASS is delighted to welcome Anna, Dakota, Aggie and Tim from Indigenous Community Education and Awareness to Leeming Senior High School. As part of their innovative YARN Youth-to-Youth Reconciliation Education, these young presenters will invite Year 10s to join them in a series of workshops that will help Leeming students to connect to the stories and experiences of Indigenous Australians.

Bookweek has become Bookmonth with prizes and certificates being presented to students at assemblies in the last week. Ms Young and Ms Manzi presented 101 Certificates of Participation, which was very pleasing because it showed how many students worked incredibly hard to prepare competition entries. There were 32 ‘winners’ of the short story competitions, all of whom received certificates and recognition. Similarly, there were 7 winners for the “Bookweek Poster Competition”. All of these students are commended for their hard work and engagement. We were very pleased with the quality of the entries and the variety of submissions.
We have just farewelled our Year 12 cohort. We are very sad to see them leave us and, after a heavy couple of weeks of ATAR Mock exams, it has been good for the students to have some study time before their final external examination cycle. We have been gratified to see a steady stream of Year 12 ATAR students coming in to see the ATAR Teaching Team and participating in the intensive small group revision and coaching sessions that were offered to them during this week following the whole group Examination Preparation Sessions provided in the final week of school. They are to be commended for their dedication to academic success.
The Year 10 and Year 11 groups are about to enter their examination cycles. Now is the time for intensive revision and writing practice. For those parents who are considering the necessity of a tutor for that one-on-one support and coaching both to finish off this year and to look forward to 2018, we have a list of tutors which I am happy to email out to you. Tutors tend to book up very quickly, so get in early now, and organise that support. At the moment, our tutors have some spaces available. Please contact me on [email protected] and I will be happy to get it to you.
With the end of the year in sight, we would like to encourage students to donate their English novels and textbooks to the Department when they are finished with them. Having a box of second-hand novels or textbooks is invaluable when students have forgotten their book or have changed classes and have not received their ‘new’ book as yet. Building a collection of such novels and textbooks also allows us to develop boxes of ‘extra reading’ for each classroom. Please do not send them off to the charity shops where so many books are simply binned, please pass them on to us and we will put them to good use.

LEEMING WINS C DIVISION ATHLETICS CARNIVAL (16 OCTOBER 2017)On a wet and windy day at HBF Stadium Leeming was able to continue its successful progression up the athletics ranks after winning D Division in 2016 and now a great win in 2017. Our younger students set the trend with some fantastic efforts in the opening 800m races where we were able to win both A and B Divisions as did our upper school boys soon after.
Great results continued to come in all day not just on the track but from a variety of field events as well. Congratulations to both Year 9 relay teams who both won their races when it looked like Belridge was starting to gain ground. The great depth and talent across all year groups will stand us in good stead for the difficult task of competing against much larger schools in Division B in 2018. All team members should be proud of their efforts and for the contribution they made to a very successful day.
Special mention to our students who were Age Champions on the day. Isabel Taylor (Year 7) and Amanda Mitchell (Year 9) were winners on the day. Lachlan Richardson (Year 11) and Shanece Darnell (Year 8) were runners up and Jayden Ormerod (Year 8) and Ryan Mitchell (Year 9) finished in third place.

SPORTSPERSONS DINNER 2017The annual Sportspersons Dinner was held at the RAAFA Club in Bull Creek on Tuesday 17 October 2017. This was a day after a very successful Interschool Athletics Carnival that saw Leeming promoted to B Division for 2018. The night acknowledged our interschool representatives in sixteen sports and rewarded the MVP for each sport.
The night was attended by 130 students and staff who enjoyed a great buffet meal and each received a certificate for their participation in interschool sport during the year. The highlight of the year is the presentation of the Sports Person of The Year Awards. Congratulations to our Gold, Silver and Bronze winners for 2017. A special mention also to Tom Peake who received an award for his contribution to interschool sport.

YEAR 10 SEMESTER TWO EXAMS 2017Students in Year 10 will be sitting their Semester Two examinations on Monday 13 November and Tuesday 14 November (Week 6) in their four core learning areas of English, Mathematics, Science and HASS (Humanities and Social Science). The exact dates and times of each exam are listed below:
• Maths: Monday 13th November – 8.30am to 10.30am
• English: Monday 13th November – 11.00am to 1.15pm
• Science: Tuesday 14th November – 8.30am to 10.30am
• HASS: Tuesday 14th November – 11.00am to 1.15pm
All of the listed exams will occur in the HASS block of classes, with students directed in advance by their subject teachers as to which room to attend for which exam.
On the exam dates, students are encouraged to arrive at their morning exam destination by 8.15am so as to allow time to settle before entering their exam room. Following the afternoon exam on each date, students are permitted to leave school grounds as they are not required to attend period 5.
All students are currently being prepared for these exams during their timetabled classes, but it is certainly recommended that students also prepare for these exams at home by reviewing the work that is being covered during class time.
Parents and Guardians must be aware of the provision for students requesting an enrolment in ATAR courses in Year 11 in 2018 to achieve either an A or B grade in the related Year 10 subject in their semester two report (ie. an A or B grade in Year 10 English in 2017 to be considered for Year 11 ATAR English in 2018). High achievement in the Year 10 Exams can assist in this process as ATAR courses have compulsory exams.
Should you wish to discuss the upcoming Year 10 Exams, please feel free to contact either Damon Atthowe (Upper School Deputy Principal) or myself on either of the email addresses listed below:

SCHOOL CONFLICT RESOLUTION AND MEDIATION (SCRAM)Schools Conflict Resolution And Mediation (SCRAM) is an interactive role-play competition for Western Australian students which facilitates the development of peaceful dispute resolution awareness and skills in secondary school communities. SCRAM teaches students to mediate via simulated disputes which relate to their everyday lives. The outcome of the mediated process is a mutual agreement which acknowledges the needs of all involved.
It was Leeming Senior High School's first attempt at SCRAM this year. We were all excited at the opportunities that this presented our students who have the natural gift of the ‘debating’ gab or who were willing to learn and work on developing their communication skills.
Our students performed scenarios during the course of the year. An adjudicator, usually a representative from the law society, or an academic from Edith Cowan University judged our rounds. Students were busy arguing and role playing over an every-day argument that could occur for a high school student. The process of mediation was accessed, as well as our role-players budding drama abilities.
I am proud of all of my students dedication throughout the length of the year. We were honoured to win the team award and were able to accept this award in person at the prestigious finale event night at the ECU, Joondalup campus. We met with several judges, law school professors and many other law representatives and were spoilt with catering and a great night indeed.
Once again, huge congratulations to my students for their dedication, efforts, drive and team support. They performed above and beyond my expectations, and their amazing work ethic was a credit to them.

The Year 8 students from 8G2 enjoyed a pizza lunch with Ms Turner early this term as a reward for being the House Group with the least unresolved absences or uniform infringements in Term 3. The students, Ms Turner and Ms Zhuvela had a great time eating yummy pizza and chatting together and Ms Turner is now wondering which House Group she will get to eat pizza with at the end of Term 4!
