Our campus is beautiful year-round, and our academic programs and students take advantage of this natural laboratory every day. Located in the town of Banner Elk nestled in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina, Lees-McRae College has the highest elevation of any college campus east of the Mississippi. Boasting an invigorating and healthful climate, the Appalachian region is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream.

Area attractions include Grandfather Mountain, the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Pisgah and Cherokee National Forests, Beech and Sugar Mountain Ski Resorts, the Linville Gorge and Wilson Creek Wilderness Areas, and much more.

The Outdoor Programs Department introduces first year students to the stunning mountains that surround our campus through Fresh Tracks, a camping, hiking, backpacking and rock climbing orientation trip offered during the late summer and early fall. Students connect with their environment and with classmates who enjoy outdoor adventure like rappelling, kayaking, hiking, climbing, canoeing, skiing and mountain biking. Outdoor Programs sponsors several clubs and interest groups that explore the area through guided adventures.

The Blue Ridge Wildlife Institute houses the Wildlife Rehabilitation program and treats nearly 1000 animals each year. Students get hands-on experience working with native wildlife including the Red-Tailed hawk and the bobcat kitten above.

Through a SACS-accredited curriculum rooted in a liberal arts core to educate the mind, body and spirit, combined with an emphasis on leadership and service, graduates obtain knowledge, skills, and a holistic understanding of themselves and the world. With over two dozen programs, our challenging intellectual environment enables every student to develop the skills necessary for a life of meaning and purpose.

The Burton Center for Student Success is committed to providing students with ample resources to ensure success in the classroom. Tutoring services, an online writing lab and academic advising services are just a few of the resources available to students to enhance their education.

The Honors Program offers a challenge for the highly motivated and academically gifted student.

Honors students are exposed to ideas of the greatest thinkers of all time in a cross-disciplinary curriculum that involves special lectures, field trips, and leadership opportunities.

Career preparation is another important piece of a Lees-McRae education. The Career Resource Center guides students through the various stages of preparing for employment opportunities and internships while beginning to plan for life beyond college. Students have access to career resources, alumni mentoring, and job and internship fairs.

The James H. Carson Library offers over 80,000 volumes and access to more than 139,000 electronic books. More than 70 databases contain over 28,000 journals and periodicals, many in full text. Through a partnership with the Appalachian College Association, students and faculty can access almost 500,000 items from 26 other institutions.

Lees-McRae’s beautiful residential campus encompasses 460 acres in a picturesque mountain valley. Our campus houses 700 students in 11 residence halls including cottages, suites, apartments, houses, and halls, each with its own style and charm. Students living on campus enjoy benefits like wireless internet, cable television, student lounges, and ample green space to play, study, and enjoy the mountain air.

Lees-McRae students make connections and become actively engaged in their own education through more than 25 student groups and clubs.Organizations like the Student Government Association give students a voice on campus

Want to bring a pet? If you can’t imagine leaving your beloved family pet at home, Bentley Residence Hall now houses students and more than 15 pets. One of a handful of pet-friendly campuses in the nation, Lees-McRae allows second year students to apply for a pet-friendly room.

worry! It’s easy to start a new club. In fact, the Equestrian Club is one of Lees-McRae’s most recent additions, not to mention one of its most popular. Students ride at the Yonahlossee Saddle Club in nearby Boone, a premier saddle club in the region.

Service to others is in our nature. Each spring on Mountain Day of Service, Lees-McRae College students, faculty, and staff complete over 30 service projects. On campus, groups may plant flowers, build a turtle habitat at the Blue Ridge Wildlife Institute, recycle used electronics, or shelve books at the New Opportunity School for Women.

Service learning opportunities include volunteering with Ski Beech’s Adaptive Ski Clinic or the Search and Rescue Team training to assist Linville Central

Search and Rescue Team with backcountry rescues and evacuations. Lees-McRae students enhance the culture of service on our campus by participating in significant service and leadership development.

Athletic talent is an integral part of the Lees-McRae community – and so is a healthy lifestyle. Our 17 competitive sports teams win championships and give Bobcats reasons to celebrate!

The Bobcat cycling team racked up 10 national championships in USA Cycling governed competition, including the 2010 national title in the cyclo-cross discipline.

Lees-McRae is a proud member of the NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas and our teams have earned 33 conference championships and the Joby Hawn Cup a few years ago for the best athletic program in the conference.

Four Bobcat student-athletes captured five different scholar athlete awards in Conference Carolinas during the 2010-11 season. Men’s cross country

and women’s lacrosse teams received inaugural Conference Carolinas Team Sportsmanship Awards and one senior women’s lacrosse player was selected as the 2010-11 Conference Carolinas Female Sportsmanship Award recipient.

At Lees-McRae, you don’t have to participate on a competitive team to enjoy the wellness aspects of our campus. Campus Life and Recreation plan several recreational games and activities for students. Whether you are an athlete or not, you can have fun joining in with your classmates by participating in events like soccer, Ping-Pong, basketball, football, dodge ball, and the list goes on. In addition to Federal Title IV aid programs and North Carolina state grant programs, Lees-McRae College also offers three types of institutional financial assistance to students.

Academic Merit Scholarships Scholarly preparation of entering freshmen and transfer students is recognized by scholarships

and grants based on academic performance. These awards reflect our commitment to helping students set ambitious goals and achieve them. All students are automatically considered for academic scholarships once they are granted admission to Lees-McRae.

Performance-Based Scholarships Athletic Scholarships and Performing Arts Scholarships are two types of performance based scholarships offered to Lees-McRae students. Athletic scholarships are awarded at the coach’s discretion based upon athletic performance and ability. A limited number of Performing Arts Scholarships are awarded by the Performing Arts Department and require an audition.

Need-Based Scholarships Need-based aid is awarded to students based on financial need and varies in amount. In order to be eligible for need-based aid, the student must show demonstrated financial need by filing the FAFSA annually.
