124 Evergreen Ave., Newark, NJ 07113-2133For the fourth year, Princess the Camel is selecting who she thinks willwin key NFL football games. Last year, her successful prognosticationswere 17 and 4 including her correct pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers towin the Super Bowl!According to John Bergmann, Popcorn Park Director: “The Eagles deci-sion to make Michael Vick a part of their team, in spite of his cruel &criminal actions, is something we cannot overlook. For 6 years, Vick tor-tured, drowned & killed dogs as part of this blood sport. We are anorganization & facility dedicated to protecting & saving abused & neg-lected animals. We cannot turn a blind eye to what he did. So Princesswill not be making any predictions of any Eagles games this season.”

Princess has become alocal legend & her suc-cess in choosing the topteam is inexplicable &yet, pretty reliable.A few days before thenext game, Princess’pick is featured on theSociety’s website(www.ahscares.org)where you can also finda running tally of herwins & losses.

Princess picks the graham cracker covering her pick for the NFL team to winthe latest week’s choice. Popcorn Park Director, John Bergmann, offersPrincess her choices, written in marker on his hands under each cracker.

A few extra grahamsafter the pick neverhurt!

In the USA, during 2009, over 74,000 fires involving5,775,350 acres resulted in untold decimation of wildlife,

trees & communities. Smokey says:“Remember – onlyYOU can prevent forest fires.”

Animal Heroes Saving PeopleIn 2003, young men entered Popcorn Park and bludgeoned to death

3 emus & 2 rheas, & blinded 3 ducks at our sanctuary. The 3 menblamed alcohol & drugs for the killing spree and against our recom-

mendation in a victim statement, they were given probation. Since thattime, all have made news for a new arrest or court appearance. Thelatest is Matthew Ronneberg of Lacey Township who was ordered to

serve 5 years in a program which entails weekly court appearances &drug testing. He must also spend 3 months in a drug rehab program. He pleaded guilty in August to burglary & an unrelated drug offense. As a result of the break-in, the Society spent over $60,000 for a new

security system.

EXTRADITION NEEDED FOR PROFESSEDWILDLIFE REHABBER TO FACE JUSTICE

According to witnesses, a resident of Somerset County, Maryland, identifiedas Jim Stanley, professed to be an animal rescue & wildlife rehabber. A groupof wildlife, waterfowl, etc. were delivered to him as it was thought he was ananimal sanctuary. Reports indicate that countless animals were starved todeath, beaten, tortured, drowned, stabbed & suffocated. Although JimStanley is in jail in Colorado & could be extradited back to Maryland,Maryland State Attorney Kristy Melker Hickman refuses to have him broughtback to stand trial for 35 counts of sadistic animal cruelty. Your help is need-ed.Please e-mail [email protected] or write to her at 30500 PrinceWilliam St. in Princess Anne, MD 21853, Phone: 410-651-3333

POPCORN PARK KILLING SPREEVANDAL IN TROUBLE AGAIN

NASA TO IRRADIATESQUIRREL MONKEYS FOR SCIENCE

In Benalla, Australia, When 78 year old farmer Noel Osborne wasknocked into a pile of manure by his cow, he broke & hip & renderedhim helpless. Mr. Osborne endured storms, cold nights, hot days, &

kept sheltered by huddling between his goat, Mandy & his Shepherd, also named Mandy. The dog & goat slept beside him every night.

He was able to get a bottle & survived on milk he took from his goat.Newspaper reports indicate that his Shepherd brought him bones.

After 5 days, some friends stopped by and discovered Osborne.

Yang Yun was participating in a free diving contest at Polar Land (ananimal park in China dedicated to creatures that live in arctic weather)in which she had to dive to the bottom of a 20 foot pool full of belu-ga whales. She suffered crippling cramps & her legs were paralyzedby the arctic temperatures. Mila, a beluga whale, used her mouth topick Yun up by the leg & swam her to the surface so the diver couldemerge for air. Outstanding pictures can be viewed on various areas

of the internet.

Dead ducks, geese and other birds were strewn about theproperty, others were piled in plastic bags.

Broken crates, food dishes, fencing and other materials were tossed aboutthe acreage, mingling with hundreds of dead animals.

NASA plans to expose 18-28 squirrel monkeys todangerous space radia-tion. This exposure in

monkeys can cause themto suffer from fatal typesof cancer, including braintumors & other illnesses. According to PETA, modern in vitro & clinicalresearch methods are available & can be used to study the effects of

space radiation on the human body. Please contact newly-appointed NASA Administrator Charles F. Bolden Jr.

The American Animal Hospital Associationhas created the AAHA Universal PetMicrochip Lookup Tool. It is free, internet-based and designed to help vet hospitals, animal control facilities & shelter staffmembers reunite lost pets with their ownersby checking participating pet recovery services’ registries. Presently, the par-ticipating companies include the American Kennel Club Companion AnimalHealth Recovery, HomeAgain by Intervet/Schering Plough, Petlink byDatamars and resQ by Bayer Animal Health. The AAHA will continue to seekcollaboration from microchip companies. If the microchip has not been regis-tered, the result returned will default to the manufacturer or distributor.

In July 2008, aScottsdale, Arizona familyhad stopped at a restau-rant in Rochelle Park and

left Cleo, their BichonFrise, in the car while

they ate. When they cameout, someone had

removed the car doorlock and taken Cleo as

well as some other itemsfrom the car. Within a

short time, Lost PetPosters were put out

across the internet butnothing else was heard. On Sept. 24, 2009, anIrvington resident who

stated that she is a petsit-ter, arrived at the Societywith a poodle mix that

had been abandoned bythe “owner” 3 days

before. Society staffersscanned for a microchipand up came the nameand location of the real

owner! The Society’s frontdesk contacted Andy Kent who flew out to Newark to reclaim his

long-lost dog. As Cleo turned the corner and saw Andy at the frontdesk, she immediately recognized her family friend and it was the

most blissfully joyful reunion. There are two extremely important points to this story. Pet theft is agrowing trend. The Society has been tracking the amount of “lost”

and stolen dogs. In N J, pet theft is a felony. It is important to keepyour pet under your control at all times. Microchipping is the onlyway to track a pet if it is lost a week ago, a month ago or longer.

SOCIETY OFFERS TIPS ON PET SAFETY &PREPAREDNESS IN HOUSE FIRES

The Society was involvedwith the investigationand animal rescue of

cats at the East Orange,N J home of Marlene

Kess, founder & directorof Kitty-Kind, a New

York City “no-kill” rescue.Ms. Kess continues her“rescue” in New York.

In June 2005, theSociety’s Newark AnimalCare Center was involvedwith the confiscation ofover 48 cats and at a

later date, 95 cats whichincluded 5 nursing mothers with kittens. Over 200 cats were found

rotting in garbage bags in the East Orange backyard of her home. Adead cat was found in a drawer, all were flea infested, one was suf-fering with maggots in the 95 degree temperature inside the house. The NJ SPCA signed complaints against Kess who was found guilty in

East Orange Municipal Court by Judge Hill Harvey & sentenced toover $14,000 in fines, 100 days of community service, 3 weeks in

jail & banned from having cats (in NJ) for 3 years. Ms. Kessappealed the matter to the Essex County Superior Court & lost. She

then went to the Appellate Division & lost. According to the NJSPCA, they affirmed a guilty charge on all 38 criminal counts of

animal abuse. However, on a technical mistake, they dismissed thejail time & sent the case back to Judge Sivilli in Essex County

Superior Court for review. Inasmuch as the case was over 4 yearsold, Judge Sivilli reduced the fine to $2,500 with 30 days of com-

munity service.Ms. Kess continues her “rescue” work in New York City.

in the NEWSTOP AHS STORIES

The Society’s ambulance wascalled to a house fire on Mt.Prospect Ave. in Newark whichuncovered the tragedy of manyanimals that died. There were 40cats that died of smoke inhala-tion and 3 caged dogs that wereburned to death. The only sur-vivors were 3 live dogs that theowner reclaimed.During this time of year, heaters, candles, holiday lights, etc., allare part of the hazards.According to statistics, about20% of them start between 4a.m. – 8 a.m.While considering house fire pre-paredness, if your home is onfire, do not stay in a burningbuilding or go back in to lookfor pets. Leave these concerns to

professional firemen. Pet rescue decals are a good idea on your home, frontdoor, front window, etc. to alert firefighters & rescuers that pets are inside. Adecal is especially important when there are several buildings, condos, apart-ments, etc. and firefighters efforts are hampered if they do not know whichliving quarters contain pets. The Society has these decals available – only$1.50 for two. Please send a self-addressed stamped envelope to PETDECALS, c/o Society, 124 Evergreen Ave., Newark, N J 07114 or use theenvelope provided in the HUMANE NEWS. If you have multiple windows &front & back doors, get several decals! If it is within your budget, home secu-rity monitoring systems are excellent for a quick response to fires in thehome. Be sure that smoke/carbon monoxide detectors are in place & working.

At Kess’s original trial, East Orange Judge Karimu Hill-Harvey said that Kess’cats lived in unsanitary conditions that “made healthy cats sick and sick catssicker. I find the defendant’s actions are incongruent with the mission of herorganization – Kitty Kind. The fate of these animals were worse than death.”

When her lawyer asked for mercy, Judge Hill-Harvey said:“Let’s not talkabout mercy. Let’s not define mercy today. Let’s talk about justice”.

Happy Endings! On Sept. 16th, 2008, the Society res-cued a badly injured dog whose leg

had been covered with a dirty sock & ashoe lace. Upon opening the sock, thedecaying flesh fell away from the bone& the leg required amputation. She wasgiven the name of “Wishes”…. and wethink all of her wishes have come true! Now re-named Isabella (Izzy), she hassent us a letter with the help of her

owners, the Weigele Family of Little Egg Harbor, NJ.“…since December, I have been in my forever home at the Jersey shore. I

am a very happy pup these days & wanted to thank all of you for the helpyou gave me. I love going for walks. I even go jogging now with my owner.

I also love to go for a swim in the bay or the river whenever I can! I gotspoiled with lots of toys & chews. I went to my forever home with the man-ners you taught me but have learned even more. Now I sit, stay, give mypaw, speak, lay down, play dead & “sit pretty” where I give both paws at

once to my owner. No matter where I go, people just cant help but to stop& pet me. You should see the looks on people’s faces when they ask whatbreed I am. My owner proudly says PIT BULL. People are amazed that Icould be a pit bull with such a sweet & gentle temperament. We try toteach everyone that we meet that not all pit bulls are the fierce fighting

beasts that everyone hears about on the news. My life was changed by myrough start but I have been given a great opportunity to teach people to be

kind to animals & thateven though someone

wasn’t nice to me, I won’thold a grudge & I canstill be a sweet dog.

Thank you again for allyou did for me. I appreci-

ate all the love & careyou gave me. Please keepup all the great work you

do for my other furrybrothers & sisters in need.

With a grateful heart,Isabella Wishes Weigele”.

LAST OF DALMATIAN LITTER FINDSLOVE IN PENNSYLVANIA

For our long-time HUMANE NEWS subscribers, you may remem-ber the front cover of the Holiday 2000 issue which featured 6Dalmatian pups that were released by a Union City resident who

had given us a false address. There had been agreat influx of unwanted Dalmatians to theSociety as well as other shelters after the film“101 DALMATIANS”. The pups were much tooyoung to be taken away from their mother &so it was left to our dedicated staff – KarenPowell & Debbie Beyfuss -- to bottle feed thegroup. Debbie even adopted one of the pups! Each of the litter went on to great lives. Mostrecently, we received an e-mail from MichelleMetz of Pennsylvania who adopted the lastfemale & was interested in keeping in touchwith the other pups’ owners. Abby Sue was thelast of the litter to find a forever home withMichelle.

Abby Sue enjoys running along the beach. Shewas one of 6 Dalmatian pups released beforethey were old enough to eat on their own.Society staffers pulled them through.

Storm, a Presa Canariopictured on theHoliday 2007HUMANE NEWS cover& then again in April2008, had been a vic-tim of poor trainingby various rescuegroups along theEastern seaboard. From Georgia, toMass., Florida &Maryland, he was kept

crated most of time which resulted in physical as well as psychologicalproblems. Tinton Falls General Manager, Bruce Sanchez, fostered Stormuntil a forever home could be found. Eila Spitzer & her husband of Edison,N J, visited Storm & thought he may be too big – especially since theyalready had two big dogs at home. But the sad tale of Storm haunted them& Eila brought her 2 dogs in to meet him. Their two other dogs had beenadopted from the Society’s Newark facility. They all get along quite well –and Storm even loves the cats. According to Eila: “Storm went through a lotin his life. Now he can just enjoy living, have walks, play, good food, acouch if he prefers that to his doggie bed in our bedroom, 2 dog siblings,a huge fenced-in backyard, love & discipline, a safe & permanent home. HeIS a challenge, but he is here to stay with whatever scars he has physicallyas well as psychologically still. We shall love & treasure him forever”.

Sam is a Patagonian Cavy who had been kept as a “pet” along with severalother exotic animals in filthy and cramped conditions. They were discoveredby the SPCA about 4 years ago when they were removing many small dogs, also living in deplorable conditions. At the time, we were able to rescue thedogs, a Palm Civet, (now our Jenny), and a Coatimundi, (Cocoa). NJ Fish &Wildlife decided the man could keep the Cavy ashe had a permit.Five years later the man wanted to get rid of Sam.We went to find her living in a barren cage withno shade; Sam’s ears were chewed down morethan halfway due to flybites and her teeth were 4”overgrown. When a Quality of Life Team fromthe Essex County Sheriff's Office sawtwo men walking out of the woods inNewark's Branch Brook Park at 8p.m., the officers stopped them.Officers Giuseppe Forgione and DavidCohen saw them walking 3 pit bulls. The officers saw the two had tied upa bleeding dog and were leading thetwo pit bulls that were pulling at theleashes to get at the injured dog. Both fellas had blood on their pants. The officers arrested the adult maleon the spot. The 17 year old juvenilewas released to his mother and wasnot charged. A Society AnimalControl Officer was immediately dis-patched to the scene to rescue the

two pit bulls that became locked together in a death-defying grip.Off to the side was the extremely sweet, docile female pit bull that had beenslashed by a box cutter to start her bleeding. The law enforcement officersadvised that the blood from her injuries will arouse and incite the two other dogs& they would have probably killed her. Luckily, this sweet pit is gentle, lovingand in our care.

Eating his lunch in Weequahic Park, a Newark resident got out tothrow his leftovers in a trash receptacle. Next to the garbage canwas a small Dachshund who appeared dehydrated, ill and elderly.

He rescued herand brought thedog to theSociety -- only afew blocks away-- and the dogwas immediatelyguided into theMedical Dept.due to her con-dition.

After a brief stint on News 12 New Jersey, the Society was contacted by a womanwho advised that one of the male dogsallegedly belongs to her. The NJ SPCA iscurrently investigating the situation. The Sheriff's Office has arrested 21 yearold Thorne Wright who gave a Lakehurstaddress and a Newark address. Wrightalso has an open warrant for receivingstolen property. All three dogs are at the Society's NewarkAnimal Care Center. The injured femalehas been given all necessary veterinarycare and now waits for a new home atthe end of this torturous affair. We callher Honey - File N-86748-F. (Newark)

A gentle dog was slashed with a boxcutter to incite pit bulls that were going to beused to fight. Essex County Sheriff ’s Officers rescued the dogs & contacted theSociety. One adult male was arrested & a juvenile was released to his mother. Judgingfrom the coat on all of the dogs, none had been fought previously.

Her internal temperature was 93 degrees when it should havebeen 102. It is doubtful that she would have survived the night inher condition. The Veterinary staff gave her immediate care -- she

was warmed up,given intravenousfluids and within afew days, she wastransformed into a

lovely, lively, younglass who is about 3

BRUTALLY SLASHED SEVERAL TIMES &TIED TO A CROSS IN A CEMETERY

We do not know if the same motivation for the cruelty inflicted on Honey is thesame rationale that led tothe numerous stabwounds on this AmericanBulldog. Just like Honey, this male dog was sweet, calm and not a fighter. He was stabbed with aboxcutter, tied to a crossin a Newark cemeteryand left to die. There wereseveral wounds in variousareas of the body & ittook over 150 stitches to

close them. The Society is offering a $1,000.00reward for any information leading to the arrest &conviction of the person who perpetrated this cruelty. It may be that this well-cared for dog was either givenaway, picked up as a stray or stolen. We affectionate-ly call him “Stitches” & he is in need of a loving & last-ing lifetime commitment. Temperament testing byour evaluator, Linda Goodman, says that Stitches is agreat dog with no bad habits. He is thought to be lessthan 18 months of age & deserves a special spot insomeone’s heart. ThisWire Haired Fox Terrier was a sad-faced,forlorn dog in need of obvious care. The skin

condition caused obvious distress which is now being relieved by antibiotics, anti-inflammatorymedication and a special diet.A blood test will be taken to see if or what type of allergies he mayhave. He is about 6-8 years old and in need of some holiday happiness. File N-86040-M (Newark).

Due to the number of needy emergency situations that have come in over the past few weeks, the Res-Q Fund is indire need of donations. This unique effort was established for the sole purpose of providing veterinary care to ani-mals that have suffered excessively cruel or neglectful treatment. Sadly, there is never a lack of animals who have

been abused or left to languish in terrible conditions. Before we can heal their broken hearts, we need to heal their broken bodies. This mayrequire the expertise of emergency care facilities or veterinary specialists. The Res-Q Fund is not only dogs or cats … it is for any sick, injured,

handicapped animal that comes through our door that needs to get on the road to recovery. Any funds donated to a particular animal thatexceeds the cost of the care of that animal will be applied to others needing treatment.

Hesuffered a broken leg and they could not afford to care for theanimal. The Society took in the animal in without any costsinvolved, have taken care of his broken leg – again, at nocharge -- and will eventually neuter him. NEWS FROM NEW YORK

PENNSYLVANIAU. S. District Judge Sylvia H. Rambo of the Middle District, found that theState has the authority to conduct unannounced inspection of regulated indus-try such as dog kennel operations & that the Secretary of the Dept. ofAgriculture has the authority to revoke licenses under appeal. The new doglaw applies to breeders who sell 60 or more dogs a year or sell dogs to petstores; establishes higher standards for large kennels, among them, largercage sizes, mandatory exercise, and vet exams for breeding dogs; & also banswire cage flooring & stacking of cages.

LINDENHURSTSunrise Villas in Lindenhurst, Long Island, New York was visited by fair hous-ing investigators from Long Island Housing Services in Bohemia posing aswould-be renters. They were rejected on at least two occasions that they need-ed service dogs. In one case, the dog was needed for a diabetic condition &in another, an epileptic condition was cited.Under federal law, landlords are required to make "accommodations" for thedisabled. Federal law recognizes trained service dogs can provide early warn-ings to diabetics & epileptics that allow them to take medication or seek help.It also recognizes chronic depression as a disability. There is a great accept-ance of blindness as a disability but there are a wide array of other conditionsthat benefit from service animals. According to Long Island Housing Services, the "no pets" discrimination against the disabled was "widespread" on LongIsland. The federal lawsuit announced by Brooklyn U. S. Attorney BentonCampbell seeks an injunction requiring the complex to alter its practices, dam-ages for persons who were the victims of discrimination & civil penalties.According to Campbell: "Persons with disabilities are entitled to the protec-tions of the Fair Housing Act. This includes the right of individuals whorequire service animals to be able to rent apartments in the same manner asindividuals without disabilities".

SUGAR GLIDERS EXPLOITED & ABUSEDFOR SALE AS POCKET PETS

A growing trend in N J …and across thenation….is the sale of Sugar Gliders. They canbe seen for sale at various pet expositions, petstores and at kiosks in shopping malls. TheSociety took in a Sugar Glider family that theirowner could no longer keep. Recently, the fami-ly had babies & now several call the Societyhome.Sugar Gliders are marsupials and are native toAustralia. In the various outlets where they aresold, the sad little creatures are kept confined tosmall cages … and in many cases, becomeinjured and/or sick from poor treatment, mis-handling. In the wild, they enjoy sap, nectar, bugs … even baby birds. They are lovable & can

bond quickly but they need to be handled frequently. As with many caged pocket pets, they are quicklyleft on their own. Sugar Gliders need plenty of space & a spacious area in which to live. They are noctur-nal animals. That means they sleep when you are awake and are awake when you are trying to sleep. They have certain nutritional requirements & their average life span is 12-15 years. To date, we have notseen any aging Sugar Gliders. If you love animals, you will forego the very temporary selfish satisfactionof purchasing one of these helpless creatures. In many areas, a special permit is needed.

Several months ago, students from the Roselle Park Middle Schoolvisited the Society’s Newark Animal Care Center. Thanks to the effortsof Mrs. Natalie Jo Vellucci, the Advisory Group brought lots of blan-kets, towels & cozy items for the animals at the shelter. The blanketsarrived just time for the wildlife that had started to arrive, as well aspuppies and kittens awaiting adoption. Thanks to Mrs. Vellucci, thestudents have become conscious about the obstacles that animals

face in our world today and the need for a helping hand.

Students from the Roselle Park Middle School brought lots of blankets, sheets & towels for the residents. Enjoying a special spot on the blan-

kets was Beardsley, a Society alumnus.

Clarissa of East OrangeEach day, the Society receives countlessnumbers of pregnant and nursing cats thathave been betrayed by humankind. They arecaught up in the myriad of unwanted felinesthat are shunned and ignored by most peo-ple.This female came to the Society in earlySeptember with 3 babies. The kittens wereso young and in poor condition & wereeuthanized. But more kittens without moth-ers were waiting for assistance and sheaccepted them.As they grew, they wereremoved to the adoption area and a needynew batch was offered. When it looked as if

Mom had enough of child rearing, she was awarded a lifetime of relaxation at KittyCity. We call her Clarissa – a very sweet, mild-mannered lass. (Forked River).

It was one year ago when the Society was called out by Police to rescue a catand a bird that were the only survivors from an Irvington housefire. Shortlythereafter, it was discovered that all of the residents had been murdered. Wewill never know the terror she saw or experienced but we have done our

very best to shield her from past memories. She doesn’t like Kitty City … soshe stays in the administrative offices which are more accommodating to herneeds. She enjoys sitting at a window watching birds, geese, ducks, dogs, peo-ple pass by. For Phoenix, we try to make every day a holiday for the mature

miss. (Forked River).
