In 1935 when Henry Ford created the village of Alberta, it became the public face of

his lumber empire. As the years went by and Ford exchanged wood auto parts for

metal, the future of Alberta became uncertain. The village was given a second

chance to shine in 1954, when the Ford Motor Company and Ford family donated it

and surrounding forest land to Michigan Technological University. In his acceptance

of the gift, President Grover Dillman said that the acquisition of Alberta (now the

Ford Center) was a “major milestone in the history of the college.”

Over the past 58 years, the Ford Center has been the site of world-class research in

forest resource management and ecosystem science that benefits the state of

Michigan and the nation. The Center continues to be a valuable resource to the University and its students.

As the base for the intensive field practicum, the Center helps to hone the essential skills that undergraduates,

graduates and Peace Corps students will need as future managers of national and international forest lands,

wildlife, and critical habitats.

The goal of this fundraising effort is $4,000,000. The Fund will allow the Ford

Center and Alberta to be self-sustaining. Your gift will secure the Ford

Center’s role in the next generation of Michigan Tech foresters, wildlife

biologists and ecologists. There are many ways to support the Ford Center,

please see the legacy fund form for the list of opportunities.

Michigan Technological University is an equal opportunity

educational institution and employer.

This legacy tree program will provide

trees/shrubs specimens, that will be planted in

the village area of the Ford Center. To

compliment the goals of the research forest,

the overall purpose of the village plantings will

be to create working examples of edible forest

gardens. “Forest gardening is an ancient

practice of growing different useful plants

together in mutually beneficial grouping that

are largely self-maintaining. Plants with edible,

medicinal and other useful qualities are

combined.”
